00:42Most of those on board have been rescued, but a major search and rescue operation is

00:48still underway, with Turkish authorities assisting teams on the ground.

00:53The ferry has now sunk, and investigators are trying to recover its black box recorder

01:00to establish exactly what happened.

01:03According to Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel, the vessel had been scheduled to

01:09travel to Turkey on Saturday, but its departure was delayed because of poor weather.

01:15The ferry eventually left Kyrenia at around 12.30 local time on Sunday.

01:22Ustel told Turkish media that the vessel was hit by two waves.

01:27As the captain tried to recover from the first wave, a second wave struck the ferry, and the

01:33vessel began taking on water before capsizing.

01:37Helicopters and Coast Guard boats were immediately sent to the scene, while ambulances waited on

01:43the beach to treat and receive rescued passengers.

01:47Authorities say their priority remains finding those still missing, but the tragedy is now also

01:53the subject of a formal investigation.

01:56The captain and seven crew members have been detained as officials investigate how the disaster

02:04Northern Cyprus authorities have promised that any negligence will be uncovered and that those

02:13Meanwhile, a local boat operator who helped rescue around 65 people told the BBC that the

02:23He said he believed the ferry should have waited until conditions became calmer, and he also claimed

02:29the vessel had arrived in Kyrenia the previous day with some damage at the front.
