00:00Hello everyone, my name is William Chambers, and it is good to be here with you all, with people who
00:06love to hear the Word of God.
00:09Let's go ahead and dive in. Today, if I had a title for this message, I would call it, You're
00:15Leaning on the Wrong Thing.
00:20Have you ever had someone promise you something and not come through?
00:26I think we all have. Now, imagine yourself building your life on someone or something that is that unstable.
00:37Our text today tells us where stability actually comes from.
00:44It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.
00:50The psalmist has a divine conclusion based on his lived reality. Based on your reality, you know that people are
00:59unstable.
01:01We know that people fail us based on reality. That is something that we can test with our lives and
01:07make a conclusion.
01:08It is settled that people are unstable. It feels better for us sometimes to put our trust in man.
01:15Because putting our trust in man, they give us immediate feedback.
01:22Putting our trust in man, they give us visible support. We can see them and lay our eyes on them.
01:28It's just much easier. It feels tangible when we put our trust in man.
01:33Actually, when we put our trust in man, in the short term, it's easier. In the short term, it's more
01:41comfortable.
01:42But it brings forth long-term instability.
01:47Now, if you contrast that with God, with God, in the short term, you got to do a little bit
01:54to put your trust in God.
01:56The Bible says that faith comes by hearing. You must hear that word some.
02:01You must get in the place where your faith grows in him some.
02:04You must focus and fixate on him some.
02:07So, in the short term, it's going to cost you a little effort to put your faith in God.
02:12But in the long term, it brings long-term security.
02:17It is just better for us to put our trust in God.
02:21Sometimes people, they look like they can help you.
02:26But once you go to them, after a while, people let you down.
02:31People were not meant to be a foundation for your life.
02:34People can support you.
02:37They can help you temporarily.
02:39They can assist you temporarily and partially.
02:42But if you make them the sole source where you put everything on them,
02:46they can't carry themselves and you.
02:50God did not make man to carry us all the way.
02:55That is a place for him.
02:57Sometimes when we're fully relying on somebody, what we're really trying to do is make them God.
03:01And sometimes we get hurt.
03:02The most hurtful pain is when you trusted someone, when you tried to make them God,
03:07and they could not be God for you.
03:10Meaning you expected them to come through and they couldn't come through.
03:13Meaning they misunderstood you.
03:16Meaning they didn't totally get you.
03:18Meaning they turned on you because they changed.
03:21It is a cursed thing to fully put your trust in man above God.
03:27Help us today.
03:28If we don't intentionally place our trust in God and fixate our trust upon him,
03:33our trust will default to something unstable.
03:36Whether it be money, reputation, children, relationships, whatever.
03:43It will just default somewhere.
03:46Oh, and the way you know that your trust is defaulting is the collapse that happens.
03:50You collapse and you feel betrayed and hurt.
03:54Sometimes we feel bitter because somebody didn't come through.
03:57That's because you were weighing too heavy.
03:59They were never meant to be your rock.
04:03Only God is meant to be our rock.
04:06Where we put our full weight in him.
04:07Where we put all of our expectations on him.
04:10Only he can carry that.
04:12That's too heavy for a man.
04:14We are too heavy for anybody else.
04:17When you're trusting people, your emotional stability is based upon their behavior.
04:23So when they're coming through, it's okay.
04:25They're coming through.
04:26They're meeting my needs.
04:27They're doing what I need them to do.
04:28But the problem is when they can't, that's when we go up and down.
04:33You fluctuating.
04:34That's not a stable foundation.
04:36Oh, help us, God, to know how much better it is to put our trust in you.
04:43People will misunderstand us.
04:45They will disappoint us.
04:46They will change towards us.
04:48Even good people, they can love us so much, but they are not reliable foundations.
04:53They cannot be.
04:54We like to put our trust in men, but it can peace with God.
04:57We even say that we trust God, but sometimes it's a mixture.
05:02We should have our full weight on God.
05:04So when people disappoint us, we don't become bitter.
05:08We don't become resentful of it.
05:10Stability that's tied to someone else produces an unstable life.
05:17So I say that you're leaning on the wrong thing when you're leaning on men and not God.
05:24Help us, God.
05:25We need you.
05:25In Jesus' name we pray and say, amen.
05:30Amen.
05:35Amen.
05:37Amen.
05:39Amen.
05:40Amen.
05:43Amen.
05:43Amen.
05:44Amen.
05:46Amen.
05:48Amen.
05:52Amen.
05:55Amen.
