00:00After the Independence Day parade, the focus shifted to reflection and celebration.
00:05At the police headquarters, members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service gathered for an Independence Day cocktail reception,
00:12a toast to the nation and those who serve it.
00:15Amid the celebrations, Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissessa pointed to what she described as a significant gains in public safety.
00:22Due to your great personal and professional sacrifices, we have achieved much.
00:27There has been a 42% reduction in murders in 2025 when compared to 2024.
00:36At present, the homicide figure is the lowest it has ever been since 2011.
00:43Take a bow for that. Give yourselves a round of applause.
00:46The murder rate is the lowest it has ever been since 2011.
00:52Woundings and shootings fell from 523 to 298.
00:58Robberies dropped from 1,636 to 876.
01:04Road safety has also improved, with fatal road traffic accidents reduced by 31%.
01:12Serious injuries have also been reduced by 35% and minor injuries by 33%.
01:24Total road traffic accidents are currently trending around 42% less than in 2025.
01:31The Prime Minister praised the TTPS for regaining control of public safety.
01:36Serious crime and murders are trending downward in all divisions, Commissioner, you have advised me.
01:42These figures demonstrate that the strategies being implemented by the TTPS and the other protective services, that these are working.
01:52The TTPS is regaining control of public safety.
01:55Commissioner of police, Alistair Guevara said, the measure of an effective police service goes beyond who is in charge.
02:03Independence in policing should not be measured by who commands the police service.
02:09It must be measured by the kind of police service we have built.
02:14And can we do what is required of us to keep this country safe?
02:21And he says at the heart of that service is trust.
02:26Trust is the real currency of policing in a free society.
02:30Without it, we are simply an authority.
02:34With it, we are a service.
02:36And earning it, it is not the work of the commissioner or the administration alone.
02:41It is the work of every officer on every shift, in every interaction with a member of the public.
02:48And while those responsible for policing focused on the present, Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander, called on the nation
02:56to look towards the future.
02:58As a people, we have to grow.
03:01We have to learn.
03:03We have to teach the new generation how they intend to take this country forward.
03:12It makes no sense that we reverse and go backwards and continue going back to what we have already built.
03:21How do we teach them to stand with us?
03:24How do we teach them to grow?
03:26A tour then not only to the 64 years of independence, but to the responsibility of protecting what has been
03:32built,
03:33strengthening trust and ensuring the next generation has a safer nation to inherit.
03:38Charlotte Kisto, TV6 News.
03:42Roger no, we have a leader.
03:45So keep going.
03:46And now...
03:46It's like a new generation.
03:47And now what is it?
03:47It's like a new generation.
03:47You're going to be kidding.
03:47It's definitely from the beginning of my life to be a되는 pastor.
