00:00Europe must prepare for a new era of simultaneous disasters, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
00:10Italy announced a 15-day extension to the suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain after the mass influx of
00:17migrants to Suta in July.
00:20Algerian President Abdelmajid Tabun has ordered changes to the criminal code, saying he intends to reinstate the death penalty for
00:26arsonists after deadly wildfires.
00:30A 43-year-old Swiss man was arrested on strong suspicion of being behind a rare deadly gun attack at
00:37a rave in Switzerland.
00:42Argentina star Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football.
00:52But you helped me.
00:54Thank you so much, Madam President.
00:56The European Commission wants to shift the focus from disaster's response to prevention by strengthening preparedness and anticipation.
01:03After Europe was hit by an exceptionally early wildfire season, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited the EU's
01:12Emergency Response Coordination Centre in Brussels.
01:14This crisis also paint a bigger picture.
01:19The risks around us are changing.
01:22They are becoming more frequent, more complex, more severe.
01:27We see changing global climate patterns that are adding to this volatility.
01:33Around the world we see higher temperatures and disrupted rainfall.
01:38The EU's civil protection mechanism has been activated ten times for wildfires in eight different countries since April,
01:46von der Leyen said.
01:48Nearly 800 firefighters were prepositioned in high-risk areas, while teams from 25 countries were deployed during the summer.
01:56In addition, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Commissioner Hadjah Labib said 300,000 people have been evacuated this summer due
02:04to the wildfires.
02:05In the face of floods, wildfires and other extreme weather events,
02:10the EU's approach to civil protection is increasingly shifting from preparing for isolated disasters
02:16to planning for multiple crises unfolding simultaneously.
02:24Italy's government announced a 15-day extension to the suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain
02:31after the mass influx of at least 72,000 migrants from Morocco entered the Spanish territory of Souta in July.
02:40Border checks for travelers arriving from Spain were due to expire on August the 31st,
02:46but in recent days Rome had explained that the situation in the Spanish enclave remains critical
02:53with between 5,000 to 10,000 irregular migrants still in the city causing serious tensions with locals.
03:01Italy had reiterated that there is no desire for a clash with Madrid
03:06and that the Czechs have concerned only third-country nationals with no impact on Italians, Spaniards or other Europeans.
03:14In recent days, Spain's foreign minister, Manuel Alvarez, has described the Italian government's move
03:20as unjustified and an affront to the dignity of Spaniards, motivated solely by electoral considerations.
03:34Israel has signed a 3 billion euro deal with Greece to establish the Achilles Shield aerial defense system,
03:40the largest defense export deal in the history of Israel-Greece relations.
03:44Israeli Defense Ministry said the system will provide Greece with a comprehensive,
03:49multilayered air defense network using Israeli-made technology.
03:53The deal includes Davis Link, Barak MX and Spider interception systems,
03:59as well as air surveillance radars and a new national command and control system.
04:04All the equipment will be manufactured by Israeli defense contractors Rafael and Israeli Aerospace Industries.
04:11Greece's defense ministry described the purchase as part of the biggest reform of its armed forces in the country's history.
04:17An additional 26 million euro deal was also signed for Rafael anti-drone systems.
04:23The agreement comes amid long-standing tensions between Greece and Turkey
04:27and growing strategic friction between Israel and Turkey.
04:34China, Russia and India, through the world's biggest powers in one room here in Bishkek.
04:39Their leaders have come for the summit of the Shanghai Corporation Organization,
04:44a bloc whose 10 members speak for more than 40% of the world's population,
04:49with observer states and partner nations swelling the guest list to more than 20 countries.
04:54It began 25 years ago as a security pact. Today it wants to be so much more,
05:00a champion of trade and connectivity and part of a push for a more multipolar world.
05:06On the table this year, security and counter-terrorism, a long-promised SEO development bank,
05:11and new trade routes as the conflict strains key corridors like the Strait of Hormuz.
05:16But the real story is in the bilaterals, the one-on-one meetings on the margins.
05:22Armenia's Pashinyan and Azerbaijan's Aliyev have already sat down.
05:27The Kremlin says Putin will meet Pashinyan to discuss the future tomorrow.
05:32And all eyes are on Modi and Putin's bilateral.
05:35Against a backdrop which is very turbulent, Trump's tariffs, the fallout from the war in Iran and the war in
05:43Ukraine.
05:44Amongst those also attending is the UN Secretary-General whose opinion could be vital.
05:49But what's happening here is crucial and matters directly for Europe.
05:54This is Toby Gregory for UN News from Bishkek.

07:06A 43-year-old Swiss man was arrested on Monday on strong suspicion of being behind a rare deadly gun
07:12attack at a rave in Switzerland.
07:15Police said that investigations into a possible motive are ongoing and that at present they believe the shooting was carried
07:22out by a lone perpetrator.
07:25Gunfire erupted in the early hours of Sunday morning as an annual rave was winding down at the race course
07:31in the town of Arau.
07:32The attack triggered an international manhunt for the shooter who left an Italian woman dead and wounded five others, some
07:40seriously.
07:42Authorities were alerted around 2.30 a.m. local time to the shooting and later took the remaining visitors to
07:48a nearby gym where many were interrogated.
07:52Authorities urged people to stay away from the area and asked for video recordings or photos from the rave to
07:58use in their investigation.
08:04Asian stocks fell on Monday as Federal Reserve boss Kevin Warsh signaled that interest rate hikes could be needed to
08:10tackle persistent inflation.
08:12At the Jackson Hole Symposium, Warsh said inflation currently at 3.7% was concerning and suggested financial conditions were
08:20not restrictive enough.
08:22However, he stopped short of committing to a rate hike.
08:26The comments pushed U.S. Treasury yields higher and lifted the dollar while all three major Wall Street indexes fell
08:32on Friday.
08:33Asian technology stocks led losses as investors assessed the impact of higher borrowing costs on AI investment.
08:41Markets are now awaiting U.S. jobs data this week and consumer price figures next week for clues on the
08:47Fed's next move.
08:49Meanwhile, oil prices jumped more than 2% after Washington said it had attacked Iranian rocket launchers near the Strait
08:56of Hormuz.
08:57The resumption of hostilities after a month of stalemate has revived concerns about the conflict and the continued closure of
09:04the Strait of Hormuz through which a fifth of global crude oil passes.
09:13The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is cancelling its planned exhibit honouring British designer John Galliano, following fierce
09:21backlash over his past racism and anti-Semitism.
09:25The exhibit had been planned as the May 2027 Spring Costume Institute show, launched by the annual Met Gala, where
09:33Galliano's famed designs are regularly worn by the world's biggest stars, including by actress Zendaya when she co-hosted the
09:40event in 2024.
09:42The cancellation was announced after a number of donors and political leaders had come forward to express their opposition to
09:49the nine-month exhibition.
09:51Galliano has long been recognised as one of the fashion world's biggest talents for his flamboyant designs.
09:57He was at the pinnacle of that world for years as creative director of Christian Dior, but was fired from
10:04the post when a series of racist and anti-Semitic comments from 2010 and 2011 surfaced and went viral, leading
10:11to his conviction in an anti-Semitism trial in France.
10:15He made a comeback in 2014 when he was hired by Paris fashion house Maison Margiela, where he remained for
10:22a decade.
10:23Galliano, now 65, has apologised often for his outburst, claiming he had suffered from alcoholism and drug addiction.
10:32Many Jewish leaders have accepted his contrition as genuine too.
10:36He was to become only the third living designer to be the subject of a solo show at the Mets
10:41Costume Institute.
10:48Argentina star Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football.
10:54In a post on Instagram, the Inter Miami forward, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of
11:01all time, said it was a decision that hurt, but that he knew it was the right time to stand
11:06down from the national side.
11:09The decision comes shortly after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, which prompted the former Barcelona and Paris Saint
11:16-Germain player to consider his future.
11:19Messi, who will continue to play at club level with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, played in a record
11:25-tying six World Cups, helping his country towards a win four years ago in a tournament he dominated in Qatar.
