00:07Small islands like Thilos here in Greece all face the same problem. Rubbish.
00:13Shipping it somewhere else is just too expensive.
00:15So most such islands do what Thilos used to do.
00:19Bury everything in a landfill.
00:22Out of sight, out of mind.
00:24But few years ago Thilos decided to stop doing that.
00:27Today this is officially the first zero waste island on the planet.
00:37Thilos, an idyllic island in the southeast of the Greek archipelago, draws visitors who value its quiet coastlines.
00:45Like Mavis Williams, who bought a house here seven years ago.
00:49But then she was told something unexpected.
00:52There is no more taking rubbish out to street bins.
00:56From now on, someone would come to collect it at her door.
01:00I remember thinking, goodness, is this really going to work?
01:03Because, you know, we have a village which has got little narrow streets.
01:06How are they going to get up and collect all this waste?
01:09Before we had these big huge bins and they were overflowing.
01:13People would leave things beside it.
01:15Every resident received special bags to sort recyclables and organic waste at home for the collection teams to pick up.
01:23They're so efficient at collecting everything.
01:26You don't feel that you've got waste hanging around at all.
01:28Every waste bag and bin in Thilos carries an individual QR code.
01:33When collectors scan it, they log the weight of each bag on the spot.
01:38The data helps managers run the system more efficiently, flag problems early, and gives residents a way to track their
01:46own recycling through a mobile app.
01:49In Livadia, the island's main village, small electric vehicles handle collections from the residents as well as hotels, restaurants and
01:58other businesses along the seafront.
02:26Tios used to send 87% of its waste to land.
02:30That figure is now zero. The island has no landfill at all.
02:36The site that was once a large rubbish heap with plastic blowing onto nearby beaches is now the center of
02:43circular innovation where all the island's waste is sorted and processed.
02:48At this time, we're standing up to the valley of Stilu, which has closed, there's no more choice and there's
02:57a new system.
02:59It's a new system.
03:01It's a new system.
03:02It's a river that makes a lot of waste, but it won't be anything.
03:06There's a 100% of waste waste.

05:19Le maire, Maria Kamma, explique.
05:43et on a dit,
06:33Les residents de Tilos now throw away 43% less
06:38than before the project began.
06:40Knowing that everything is processed by hand
06:43and being able to track their own figures alongside their neighbours,
06:47has pushed people to reduce, reuse and recycle
06:50rather than simply dispose.
06:54Statis Kontos is the secretary-general,
06:57a senior administrative manager of the municipality of Tilos.
07:03We have come up with a logic that
07:05now it is not a waste.
07:06It is materials.
07:08All have a second life.
07:09And we try to find out
07:10what others think are the waste.
07:13The second life.
07:15The best use of them.
07:31The Just Go Zero Tilos project is ready to grow.
07:35Regional authorities are planning to extend the model
07:38so that more small islands across Greece
07:41stop burying their waste and start dealing with it properly.
07:44It is not an extraordinary.
07:46We can bang on the pulpit
07:48and support them by reducing它.
07:51And we can brain切 dit.
07:55It's easy for the people,
07:56but we discover the wildlife of a farmer.
