00:00Depression is an illness that affects people in all walks of life.
00:03One in five adults experience mental illness every year.
00:07The use of antidepressants is on the rise, soaring nearly 400%.
00:10The pharmaceutical industry remains the most profitable business in the U.S.
00:15We're not dealing with the root of the problem.
00:17There is actually no mental in your body to have a health of.
00:22The way that your body expresses itself can lead to changes in your thoughts, feelings, emotions, behavior.
00:27And these problems we then call mental health problems.
00:33What is trauma?
00:38Trauma is really misunderstood.
00:41Its effects reach right down to a bodily, cellular, genetic and epigenetic level.
00:48Yes, you were a victim of trauma.
00:50Now what do you want to do about it?
00:52Because this is your life.
00:54Parents with their own unresolved histories of trauma are triggered by their children's attachment.
01:04Internal family systems takes the position that we all have what I call parts of us.
01:09Leads to so many illnesses, diabetes, heart disease, cancer.
01:14Not to mention suicidality, anxiety, depression.
01:18Why are we not more aware of trauma in medical care in general and in mental health care in particular?
01:26The whole medical system is designed to diagnose on the basis of symptoms as opposed to looking at the person
01:34and looking at their history.
01:35Tells us nothing about cause and nothing about then how we might find a way forward to recover.
01:43And there's this danger that the whole system of psychiatric diagnosis and classification, it causes us to not notice how
01:52incredibly important and relevant that history is.
01:55My thoughts in the DSM are that we should probably get rid of it.
02:00It really misses the point.
02:02It's published by the American Psychiatric Association and they have disclosed that the vast majority of those on the board
02:10who authorize what goes into that document are actually paid by pharmaceutical companies.
02:22Trauma is a fact of life.
02:25But trauma doesn't have to become a life sentence.
