Willard and Dibs debate if the 49ers are actually hurt entering the 2026 season.
Transcript
00:00And I knew this.
00:01When I said this to you yesterday, I'm not even going to lie,
00:05Shasky's face is in, like, I'm picturing him.
00:09And I'm like, oh, he's going to obliterate this take.
00:13But I really spent some time thinking about it.
00:16And I want to run it by you.
00:18And you can weigh in to 888-957-9570.
00:24Tim Kawakami today wrote the 49ers, for the first time in a while,
00:31are starting to feel whole.
00:33Okay?
00:34I wonder if it helps if it comes from someone else.
00:39Is this what I said yesterday,
00:41that I feel great about the 49ers' injury situation?
00:46You seemed to agree with me when I said this yesterday.
00:50Right.
00:51Is this some sort of a harebrained idea?
00:56Again, I'm looping into that take what we already knew.
01:00To me, it's not fair to show up and be like,
01:03I can't believe Kittle and Bosa are hurt.
01:07They were hurt when we left last year.
01:10That's not new.
01:12So if you've got a guy who tears an Achilles in January,
01:16and the day before a plane flight to Australia,
01:19the team already can't rule him out,
01:22I'm going to take that as a positive.
01:25No?
01:26I would take it as a positive, yeah.
01:28Like, I don't know how else to look at that.
01:31This is incredible that George Kittle might go on this trip.
01:34And if he doesn't go on this trip,
01:36it feels like week two is very likely,
01:39as far as when he will be able to return.
01:41And I think that you could look at the injury piece of it
01:45and look at their depth chart right now
01:47and see about, and I'm not going to add them all up
01:50because I just did math.
01:51There's about 20 players listed as questionable.
01:55And is it a questionable concern?
01:56A classic Shanahan?
01:58Is it truly questionable?
01:59I think if you look at all these guys,
02:02like McCaffrey's questionable, he'll play.
02:04Evans will play.
02:05Stribbing will play.
02:06Juszczyk will play.
02:07Poonie will play.
02:08They're currently listed as questionable,
02:10according to ESPN.
02:12So if you think that those people are actually injured,
02:15then yeah, they're again suffering through massive injuries.
02:19My big take is that none of this really matters
02:22except for the already declared IR guys
02:25like, you know, Ricky Pearsall.
02:28Pearsall is, yes.
02:28Pearsall is, he's done.
02:30And Mikel Williams is on the pup.
02:31And so those guys are injured for real.
02:34But beyond that, all of these questionables,
02:37I'm not buying it.
02:38Well, the Mikel one,
02:39I'm going to loop right into Kittle and Bosa.
02:41We left here last year knowing that already.
02:44He tore his ACL.
02:46So I just don't want to re-adjudicate last year.
02:50Whatever everyone's point was
02:51about injuries last year, okay, fair.
02:54Let's have that conversation we have.
02:57We've gone down all of the rabbit holes,
02:59including the substation.
03:00But I'm simply looking at this year.
03:03Is Nick Bosa's general health
03:06a concern going into the season?
03:08Sure.
03:09Sure, sure, sure.
03:10I see that.
03:12But I don't know how in this moment
03:15with him tearing the same ACL
03:19for the second time in his life,
03:20I don't know how we would have arrived
03:23at September 1st
03:25sort of feeling like,
03:26well, no, he's definitely all the way back.
03:28He's definitely playing
03:29and he's definitely all the way back.
03:31All the data that we've received
03:34is that a torn ACL
03:36is usually darn near a year.
03:38It hasn't been a year yet.
03:40And when you do it for the second time,
03:42it adds time.
03:43So, I went to bed in February going,
03:46I'm not sure about Nick Bosa,
03:48Michael Williams,
03:48and George Kittle for week one.
03:50And so, when we sit here now
03:52and it's like,
03:53okay, Michael still needs some time,
03:55Bosa is probable,
03:57and George Kittle is a very solid maybe,
04:00I look at that as,
04:02that's probably as good
04:03as we could have gotten
04:05based on what we knew
04:06when we left in February.
04:07And then outside of those three guys,
04:11what are we looking at?
04:12Ricky Pearsall.
04:14We lost him.
04:15Okay.
04:15Other than that,
04:17and I hate saying this out loud,
04:19I want to knock on,
04:20nothing major has happened.
04:22And so, that's where I'm coming from
04:24when I say,
04:26this feels like this camp
04:28went pretty well.
04:31I don't know,
04:31did Mike Evans,
04:32is this a new thing today
04:34that came up
04:34with the adductor situation,
04:37I guess John Lynch
04:38spoke on Mike Evans
04:39and said,
04:40you know,
04:40they hope he's back
04:41at practice next week.
04:42So, now does that bring
04:44what had already been
04:45previously reported
04:46into question?
04:47Maybe.
04:48Maybe, I guess so.
04:50And so, that's a bummer
04:51and I don't like hearing that.
04:53But, I don't know,
04:54that's where I come from.
04:55Like, the majority of the injuries
04:56that you're concerned about
04:58as a Niner fan,
04:58it feels like we already knew
05:00about those before camp started.
05:01And the other ones are,
05:02you know,
05:03third stringers like
05:04Nick Zackel,
05:05who's on IR,
05:06and I think Austin Pleasance
05:08is as well.
05:09And, you know,
05:10other people that you probably
05:11couldn't pick out of a lineup.
05:13So, yeah,
05:14they are injured.
05:15They have guys on the injured list.
05:16But, to me,
05:17it boils down to,
05:18you know,
05:19the big time front line guys.
05:20And,
05:21if you get to week one
05:22and Bosa can't go
05:24and Kittle can't go,
05:25they don't even make the trip.
05:26And,
05:27turns out Mike Evans,
05:28a doctor along with his hamstring
05:30and his quad,
05:31now he can't go?
05:32Okay.
05:32Now we're at week one
05:34and we can have a conversation
05:35about injuries again.
05:36For me,
05:37when you're at this spot
05:38in the calendar
05:39and you've got a team
05:40that is being clearly
05:41super conservative with guys
05:43and all these questionable
05:45tags on the big board,
05:47until we actually get to the game
05:49and they either play
05:50or they don't play,
05:51I'm not worried about it.
05:52Yeah.
05:52I mean,
05:53I know that it's uncomfortable
05:55to see guys on the side.
05:58It struck me,
05:59second camp in a row,
06:01in fact,
06:01that something happened
06:02with Christian McCaffrey
06:03specifically that struck me.
06:05So,
06:05we've got our big
06:07Red and Gold Summit
06:09coming up on Thursday.
06:10When we had our Red and Gold
06:11preseason summit last year,
06:13we had a plan,
06:14we were having fun,
06:16and the whole thing went sideways.
06:18Because we hit the breaking news sounder
06:20and Christian McCaffrey
06:22had left practice
06:23with, quote,
06:24a calf issue.
06:26Now,
06:27we should have known right away
06:28because he spoke to reporters
06:29at his locker after the fact.
06:30We should have known
06:31that he was fine,
06:32but we spent the rest
06:33of the Red and Gold Summit
06:34talking about the idea
06:36of Christian McCaffrey
06:37not playing football
06:38for the 49ers last year.
06:39And he missed zero games.
06:41Zero games.
06:42Now,
06:42this year,
06:43he had tightness.
06:46That turned into
06:47pro football talk
06:50telling us
06:51that there's people
06:52out there
06:52that think
06:53this is a contract situation.
06:54We've got a hold-in
06:55going on, Bob.
06:57And
06:58then Christian came back
07:00and they were like,
07:01yeah,
07:01that was just planned rest
07:03the entire time.
07:05There's nothing going on here.
07:06There's nothing to see.
07:08So,
07:09I just,
07:09I look at the Niners
07:10and I understand
07:11the veteran nature
07:12of some of their players,
07:14but I really,
07:15it,
07:15I feel strongly,
07:17it certainly seems to me,
07:18that a lot of
07:20what they're doing,
07:21they seem to be getting
07:23criticized for it
07:24and I think it's actually
07:25in response to the criticism.
07:27The Niners are trying
07:28to practice a little bit
07:29differently this year.
07:30And the jury is out
07:31on,
07:32you know,
07:32whether or not
07:33this is going to work
07:34to get Kittle back
07:35for week one
07:36or Nick Bosa.
07:37And so,
07:37until we get to that spot
07:39and I guess we'll find out
07:40hopefully by tomorrow night
07:42if they're all boarding
07:43the plane
07:44and maybe somebody
07:45will be there
07:45like,
07:45you know,
07:46checking to do it,
07:47like,
07:47take and roll.
07:48Kittle?
07:49Kittle,
07:49are you here?
07:50Is he on the plane?
07:51Right.
07:51Yeah,
07:52they leave tomorrow night.
07:53Exactly.
07:53I think they leave
07:54like an hour
07:54after we get off the air.
07:56Okay.
07:56Yeah,
07:56I knew it was something
07:57in the evening.
07:58I thought it might have
07:58been a little bit later,
07:59but by the time
08:00we get to the summit,
08:02I don't think that
08:04they probably would have
08:04landed by then.
08:06If they leave at seven
08:06and it's a 17-hour flight,
08:09they probably will have
08:10touched down.
08:11Yeah,
08:11is it 17
08:12or is it 19?
08:13I keep hearing
08:14different numbers,
08:14but yeah,
08:15somewhere in there
08:16and I don't know
08:17what boarding group
08:18he's in.
08:18Right.
08:19So like,
08:19we'll have to,
08:20you know,
08:20by six o'clock tomorrow,
08:22A,
08:22B,
08:23like,
08:23is he boarding group
08:24one,
08:24two,
08:24three?
08:24I don't know.
08:25He's probably
08:25sitting alone though
08:26if you ask Nick Bosa
08:28and Brock Purdy
08:28their thoughts.
