00:10Jane for Spider-Man, which was my dream because I love it. Oh, my God. Spider-Man is my favorite
00:14superhero. Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So when I got it, I was like, this
00:17is so exciting. And then we filmed like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And
00:23then like a year later, they're like, so you're not in the movie anymore.
00:27Shailene Woodley revealed the brutal moment she found out she was cut from The Amazing
00:32Spider-Man 2, despite being cast as Mary Jane opposite Andrew Garfield, and even filming several
00:38scenes together for the 2014 film. Spidey's leading lady had been previously played on
00:43the big screen by Kirsten Dunst opposite Tobey Maguire, and later Zendaya would become the
00:48MJ to Tom Holland's Peter Parker. They tied the knot IRL earlier this year. But Shailene
00:54Woodley wouldn't be so lucky. She shared her Spider-Man story in a candid sit-down with
00:58the Screen Actors Guild. As part of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations series, moderator
01:04Janelle Riley asked the actress about rejection. That's when Shailene revealed that producers
01:08told her they ultimately decided Mary Jane shouldn't overlap with Spider-Man's other
01:13love interest, Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, who famously meets her demise in the comics
01:18and in the movie.
01:20They were like, let's wait for her to die, and then we'll introduce Mary Jane. Which
01:24made sense, but then they didn't make that film.
01:26That's right. It's coming back to me now. They thought it would be weird to introduce
01:31a new love interest at all.
01:33That's what I was told. But again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible,
01:37and they're like, we can't do this.
01:38Good thing Shailene can laugh about it now, over a decade later. Adding to the disappointment,
01:44Sony pulled the plug early on the Amazing Spider-Man franchise after two movies. No trilogy, no
01:49Mary Jane. They ended up rebooting the whole thing with Tom Holland. This summer, Andrew
01:54Garfield dished to Page Six how he felt about his replacement.
02:18According to The Wrap, Holland could rake in 100 million dollars thanks to back-end bonuses
02:23for his starring role in the box office smash, Spider- Brand New Day.
02:28As for Shailene, she also revealed to SAG that she didn't actually audition for The Amazing
02:31Spider-Man. Her casting came from a meeting with the director, Mark Webb. She said,
02:36I remember feeling very rattled by it, because how do I know that I'm who you want, and not
02:42just who the studio wants? It's just as scary to get an offer for something, because you're
02:46right for a role, or you're not right for a role. When you audition and you get chosen,
02:50you know when you get on set, there's zero doubt in your mind, you're the right person
02:54for the role.
