00:00You know, there's a thing that managers say all the time that maybe the toughest thing to do
00:05is manage a superstar into his twilight. You're dealing with it with, I hate to push
00:09Christian Yelich into his twilight, but he's in his mid-30s. He's not the same player.
00:14What is it like to try to manage a great player who is not quite as great anymore?
00:20It's easy because this kid is who he is. And I say this with complete honesty and sincerity
00:29and not trying to protect my relationship with him. I'm just telling you straight out,
00:33this is a teammate. This is a ballplayer who cares deeply about the game, about his teammates,
00:42about the organization. He carries a tremendous burden. The other night, 1.30 in the morning
00:47on an off day, hitting basics on an off day.
00:51At your stadium?
00:53At the stadium with no one around. I happened to be there. My son was there.
00:58This guy cares. Since then, he's got a 900 OPS or something like that, but he gets it.
01:04You know, his body hasn't changed. He's a great athlete. His body hasn't changed that much.
01:08The burden that he carries, and he's our leader. He has the best interests of the team at heart
01:13all the time. He's been a joy to be around. He's a great man. That's what makes our game great.
01:19I'm sure there's a lot of these guys out there. Christian is, it's been easy,
01:23and he's been a huge part of this thing.
