The filming process was grueling, but the incredible team behind this project exceeded my expectations. Through this collaboration, we all got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—to travel back in time and restore a story that history had forgotten. It is my hope that The Demon Core corrects this historical oversight and that everyone who watches the film remembers Louis Slotin’s name, carrying with them his legacy of bravery. When people look back at Los Alamos during WWII, I hope they think not only of Oppenheimer and his bomb but also of a group of “cowboy scientists” — young, fearless physicists determined to push the boundaries of science for the betterment of humankind, no matter the cost.

00:20Yeah, I'm sorry. I just needed to call and tell you, Dad.
00:28What's wrong?
00:29Nothing. There's nothing. It's just that, um, well, there's been a bit of an accident, and I was wondering if
00:38you wouldn't mind coming out here too much.
00:42Would I mind? Son, I...
00:48An accident. What kind of accident?
01:06Hey, Lou.
01:11Hey, Lou. What have you done this time? Same as always! Good job.
01:26Just doing your job, huh?
01:29You were found naked, cleaning out the bottom of a tank that is used to absorb radiation.
01:36Yes, well, it needed to be cleaned, sir.
01:38I know it needed to be cleaned. You know how I know? Because the paperwork came across my desk.
01:44And I approved it to be cleaned next week. The right way. With proper precautions.
01:51Well, I'm sorry I couldn't wait.
01:54Damn it. Lou. You're supposed to... I don't even want to fucking call you a scientist.
02:32Not some half-assed cowboy.
02:34What does your staff call it again? He's...
02:36Tickling the dragon's tail.
02:37No, no. It's, um... Rufus.
02:41No, I don't know. I don't think I want to tickle a man named Rufus, sir.
02:46Everything's a joke to you, isn't it?
02:49You know how often I am warned of how reckless you are with Rufus?
02:54The plutonium core. They can level this entire valley, and yet you play with it like a toddler plays with
03:01a toy.
03:05Have you forgotten what happened to Harry?
03:16Keep it up. You'll be dead within a year.
03:23No, no, no...
04:02Don't be through.
04:05Don't be through.
04:31Betty, tell it to me again.
04:35Again?
04:36Yeah.
04:42Well, it's August.
04:45Just not so far from now.
04:48And there's a little home, and it's not physically unique by any means, but there is something warm about it.
05:02It's inviting, because love dwells there.
05:08You're outside. Barefoot. Looking. Decent, I guess.
05:27You are ethereal.
05:33And you don't know it yet, but I'm with you. Far from here.
05:45And I take your hand, and I whisper that I will always be yours.
06:03Did I... Did I say something wrong?
06:08No.
06:17It shouldn't be this hard.
06:19Two months. Two months.
06:23We test in bikini, and then that's it.
06:26I put this behind us.
06:32You are the most brilliant man I've ever met, and you can't see it.
06:37You will never really be done with this place.
06:40Or that thing.
06:44Rufus...
06:45Is my responsibility.
06:49I'm the best there is at what I do. There is no one else.
06:54So until they find me or replace me...
06:56Until then, all we are is a dream, Lou.
07:01I've got to go.
07:26I've got to go.
07:28I'm terrified.
07:35It's dangerously simple.
07:39The tamper reflects neutrons.
07:42Now, as you'll see, it's molded to fit quite snugly around the core.
07:48However, the result of complete enclosure around the plutonium is, of course, undesirable.
07:55What happens if it does reach criticality?
07:58Supercriticality, you mean.
08:00Yes.
08:02If that happens, it's every man for himself.
08:05I will be the first one out of the room.
08:12I'm teasing.
08:16Criticality region.
08:19That is where our data of interest lays.
08:24This is daredevil science.
08:27Well, you're not wrong.
08:30We are on the razor's edge of physics, gentlemen.
08:35Sometimes, science requires tickling the dragon's tail.
08:40As they say.
08:44Two from Oak Ridge.
08:45There's another pair from Hanford.
08:47Louis.
08:48The best and brightest are on their way.
08:51When they heard the...
08:53Well, they didn't hesitate to take the next train.
08:55We're gonna beat this.
08:56Good.
08:57Well, when they get here, you send them in.
08:59I'd love to shake their hands.
09:03I see a sense of humor still intact.
09:04That's a good sign.
09:06Oh, yeah.
09:07Picture of healthier.
09:11About my dad.
09:13And Betty.
09:20Don't worry, Groves.
09:24Well, he isn't completely unreasonable.
09:26He'll cave.
09:27In the meantime, I've got someone on the outside.
09:29They're sending telegrams to Betty and your folks.
09:35And I'd thank Nurse Anna, too.
09:36But she won't give me the white blood cell count now, will she?
09:43I'm sorry.
09:44I'm sorry.
09:48I can't.
09:54Damn it, Lou.
09:59Always did have a way with women.
10:04That bad, huh?
10:08The greatest scientific minds are on their way to solve this.
10:11There's no need to be hopeless.
10:15Well, just remember, when hope fails, let patience hold.
10:22I like that.
10:24Who said it?
10:26Harry did.
10:28Nine months ago.
10:31In this room.
11:01It's all right.
11:02I've done it a thousand times.
11:05And I've got the spacer in.
11:19Not today, Louis.
11:24No, Lou.
11:25Go ahead.
11:27Go on.
11:29Go on.
11:33Lou, what are you gonna do?
11:36What's he gonna do?
11:38Well,
11:40if you're going to replace me, then you need to see
11:43how we do it here at Los Alamos.
11:54I say it.
12:03You know what's he doing?
12:03You can't get up.
12:04But...
12:12You can't do it.
12:12It's just a bit okay.
12:12Do you have any questions?
12:12Can I help her?
12:16Do you have any questions?
12:17Are you gonna get in?
12:17Oh, you know?
12:53So the doctors in Chicago, this dye they claim that could...
13:03I see.
13:06Is there nothing that could be done?
13:08May I hear the doctors say that he doesn't have the abdominal rash?
13:13That's good, right?
13:15I wouldn't know.
13:18He does.
13:21How do you mean?
13:24Harry Daglian.
13:26It was a Tuesday when it got him.
13:30Tuesday, 21st.
13:32Same corps, same building.
13:33Hell, we got him in the same hospital.
13:37How are the others?
13:41They'll live.
13:42Good.
13:44Good.
13:45That was a heroic thing that Lewis did.
13:49And you're gonna say that in your statement?
13:50Not this again.
13:52You know why we can't be transparent?
13:54There'd be endless panic.
13:57This facility has a reputation as the home of the most powerful weapon ever known.
14:04This was an embarrassment.
14:08Steppened thing.
14:09The truth comes out eventually.
14:12Yeah.
14:13And in time, they'll come to know Lewis Slotin as a hero.
14:24In time.
14:31Major, he's my friend.
14:33Yeah, Philip.
14:35He knew what he was dealing with.
14:39We had to handle Harry's passing the same way Lewis knows.
14:42So we let him die alone in agony.
14:50You're his friend, aren't you?
15:04What exactly was her own?
15:07Knocking it apart.
15:08Ending it.
15:09A reflex.
15:10A nanosecond.
15:10Completely avoidable.
15:11I've told you, put the experiment under remote control for months.
15:15Proper radioactive precautions.
15:16You said it yourself.
15:20Have you even tried to notify his father?
15:26No, I thought not.
15:49I have your word.
15:55Mr. Slotin.
16:01Mr. Slotin.
16:03I'm Philip.
16:04It's a pleasure to meet you, sir.
16:05Welcome.
16:06Your son, Lewis.
16:07He's told us.
16:23Why don't you follow me?
16:24My son is, sir.
16:27Oh, my God.
16:32My son, yeah.
16:43I know.
16:47I'm the care the king of the brother.
16:49I'm the care the king of the fellow daughter.
17:11You made it.
17:18A little accident?
17:22No.
17:23Just a bit of a burn.
17:42It's okay.
17:46I'm here.
17:47I'm here.
17:48I'm here.
17:51I'm here.
17:59I'm here.
18:02I'm here.
18:13You're here.
18:23it's bad
18:25I found the rash
18:28I'm unsure of the precise pathology
18:30but the rash it indicates
18:32Mr. Morrison
18:34that was the last time
18:36I am ever going to speak
18:38with my son
