00:00If you want to get better at work, try this three-step framework for giving difficult feedback.
00:04Most of us have heard of the compliment sandwich. You say something nice, then you give the
00:09criticism, then you say something nice again. But experts say that that's not how you should do it.
00:13A 2022 study from the American Psychological Association found that people really do value
00:19honest feedback. The study conducted five experiments involving nearly 2,000 participants,
00:24and across all five experiments, the person giving the feedback consistently underestimated
00:29how much the other person wanted it. Etiquette experts Daniel Post-Senning and Lizzie Post say that
00:34instead of ending feedback with a compliment, you should end it with a suggestion. So start by
00:39recognizing something they did well, then be direct about the issue you want to address, and end it
00:45with a specific action they can take. So here's today's challenge. Think about one piece of feedback
00:49that you've been avoiding. Before you leave work today, spend five minutes addressing it with this
00:54three-step framework. First, start with what the person is doing well, then be very clear about the
01:00feedback, and end it with a suggestion that can be as simple as, hey, I think this one thing would
01:06make
01:06this even better. That's how you turn feedback into coaching, and that's how you can get better at work
01:11today.
