00:0913 new beds now in use at the hospital's newest ward opened this week after months of hospital-wide staffing
00:17shortages and ongoing bed pressures in the emergency department.
00:21Very soon we'll be opening up the 24 bed mental health facility as well so with 24 beds at the
00:28mental health, 32 beds here, we are expecting that to reduce the overall pressure throughout the hospital.
00:35A weeks long staffing emergency that last month prompted a call out for non-frontline staff to come back to
00:42the hospital floor, also relieving pressure.
00:44We did put the call out because at that particular time we were listening to particularly the Nurses Federation saying
00:51that there was pressure on the staff.
00:53We wanted to make sure that they had the opportunity to have a break during a very very busy time
00:58so very very appreciative of all of those who put their hand up.
01:01Hospital staff began treating patients here at 1C this week with all its 32 beds available for use by the
01:09end of the month.
01:10But the government is still at the earliest stages of planning for upgrades to RDH's maternity ward.
01:17Well we originally spoke to the federal government, we originally asked for $35 million so what we have been given
01:24is $10 million.
01:25A new nursery, private bathrooms, a space for bereavement and upgrades to the neonatal intensive care unit are all planned
01:34for RDH's maternity ward.
01:36But the minister now says some of those much needed upgrades may be cut.
01:41We want to get as much coverage as possible.
01:44There may be some things that can't be covered but we'll look at how we manage those moving forward.
