00:00Electric vehicles have outsold both petrol and diesel cars in Australia for the first
00:04time ever, in what industry figures are calling a genuine structural shift in the market.
00:09I wish I had one because the cost of living and price of petrol at the moment is bow bow.
00:16New data shows more than 27,000 battery electric vehicles were sold in August, roughly a quarter
00:23of all new cars, edging out both petrol and diesel vehicle sales.
00:29The Tesla Model Y was again Australia's best-selling vehicle overall, with more than 6,400 sold,
00:37its third time topping the charts for 2026.
00:41EV sales are up 171 per cent on last August, and hybrid sales are up 7 per cent, with petrol
00:50and diesel now making up just 45.5 per cent of the market between them, down from being
00:56the dominant fuel types a year ago.
00:59Toyota remains the top-selling brand overall, followed by BYD in second, with Tesla rounding
01:07out the podium in third.
01:10I have ordered one.
01:14I'm just going to keep my diesel van for like the flower markets and the weddings and then
01:18get a little EV for like the deliveries, because yeah, diesel is still expensive, more than what
01:24it was like six months ago, so it just helps with the day-to-day like running off the business.
01:29Legacy brands like Ford, Mazda and Hyundai all fell year on year, while EV and Chinese-backed brands
01:37like BYD, MG and Geely continued to surge.
