00:00I'm Callum Bischoff, I'm an agronomist and I work at Climate Friendly, helping out in
00:05the soils team as a project manager.
00:07I'm out here at Mothal Falls today visiting Lorraine, having a look at the country, assisting
00:11the day-to-day running of the project.
00:13There's a bunch of fantastic things with soil carbon that we really want to increase as
00:20much as possible for the health and productivity of the land.
00:23It's not just about storing carbon from the atmosphere, that's obviously a very great
00:28goal and it's part of what we do, but on the farmer side of things, they want to see their
00:33soil carbon improving and increases water infiltration, increases fertility of the soil.
00:38It really gives a home for the microbiology, all the little things living in there to feed on.
00:43So it's really, 101, the most key thing for healthy soil.
00:47Let's see what that looks like.
00:48Ah, look at the root system in this.
00:52What's going on here Callum?
00:54This is all held together, we've got a really nice healthy bit of roots up here.
00:58That tells me you've got a lot of organic matter and carbon up in that surface that's being built
01:02up by that plant.
01:03What's it smell like?
01:04That's the test.
01:06Good, got a really nice organic smell to it and that's what we want.
01:09We want that to be soil, we don't want it to be dirt.
01:12You can see that nice big black organic layer, that is the carbon, that's why it's black.
01:17It's all of this grass is building that up and turning it from dirt to soil.
01:21So the ideal is to let that grass rest, that pasture rest and then bring the stock in and
01:29just give it a haircut and then it just goes boom and responds because that's speeding up photosynthesis.
01:36If we're speeding up photosynthesis, we're sequestering carbon.
01:39You can see as we look around us, it's performing fantastically because of that.
01:43So this is a really healthy thriving soil and I can see that all the way from a test coming
01:48back
01:48from the laboratory all the way through to the cows that are walking around here today.
