00:04Protecting marine species and the environment during military readiness activities in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska
00:10are important goals for our United States Navy and Coast Guard.
00:14We are required to undertake measures to avoid, reduce, or minimize potential impacts military readiness activities can have on local
00:22marine habitats and wildlife.
00:24To that end, the Navy and Coast Guard implement mitigation measures, such as using lookouts to monitor for marine species
00:32before and during military readiness activities,
00:35reducing or stopping sonar use if animals are sighted within certain distances, and restricting activities in certain areas or times
00:43of the year.
00:44The Navy and Coast Guard recognize the importance of protecting the endangered southern resident killer whale, as well as other
00:51species,
00:51and have established geographic mitigation areas during activities for the benefit of the species.
00:57The Navy and Coast Guard use the Protective Measures Assessment Protocol, or PMAP,
01:03a web-based mapping tool to employ the right measures in the right locations and seasons, as identified in regulatory
01:10documents.
01:11The Navy issues awareness messages when southern resident killer whales are expected to be in the area,
01:16reminding military ships and aircraft to be vigilant and watch for them.
01:22For certain offshore activities, the Navy will cancel or relocate them if southern resident killer whales are sighted near the
01:29planned location.
01:30The Navy and Coast Guard are committed to protecting the marine environment
01:34and actively strive to minimize potential effects on marine species and the marine environment.
