00:06Research published in the journal Nature Human Behavior concluded that net migration patterns around the world
00:12are actually more strongly linked with socioeconomic factors than climate, reports SWNS.
00:19The lead author of the study said,
00:20Perhaps the most surprising finding from our study is that when we look at the overall picture,
00:25social factors are more important than environmental factors in explaining migration.
00:30And regardless of the level of income involved,
00:33gross national income was the key factor in explaining net migration in half of countries.
00:38Eureka Alert says 58% of net negative migration occurred in areas with high environmental stress
00:45and low capacity to adapt to changes.
00:48Researchers call this one of the biggest challenges of our times,
00:52stressing that areas under environmental stress are the areas with lowest resilience,
00:57which means that they aren't well equipped to cope with changes.
