00:01The car tax conviction against the Mayor of London, Lord Sadiq Khan, has been formally
00:07withdrawn by the DVLA after he fell victim to what was described as a scam which saw
00:12him fined for not taxing a 24-year-old Nissan Micra.
00:17The Mayor was prosecuted last month by the DVLA for keeping an unlicensed vehicle and
00:22was handed a £220 fine by a court in Hertfordshire after the case was dealt with in private in
00:30a fast-track court process.
00:32In a magistrate's court hearing on Thursday morning, the case was formally reopened against
00:37the Mayor and withdrawn by a panel of magistrates after a request from the DVLA.
00:43Neither the Mayor nor a representative from the DVLA was present at the court for the
00:48one-minute hearing.
00:49The DVLA says it is still investigating the circumstances of the case.
00:55Prior to the case being heard, a court official told the press association that the magistrate's
01:00court did not usually deal with DVLA hearings on Thursdays, but the Mayor's case had been
01:07added to the list on Wednesday.
01:09After the conviction was withdrawn, a spokesperson for the Mayor said they had nothing further
01:15to add beyond Wednesday's statement, which said it's not the first time the Mayor has
01:21been victim of a scam involving people falsely stating that Sadiq is the owner of a vehicle.
