Renault has brought back a legend with the Renault 5 E-Tech, and the big question is whether this retro EV is more than just a nostalgia trip. This review looks at the modern Renault 5’s design, electric powertrain, city manners, range, charging, and the everyday quirks that come with a car built to charm first and impress second.

The video compares the new model with the original R5, explains how Renault kept the classic proportions while enlarging the car, and shows why it sits between the Twingo and Clio in size. There’s also a close look at the styling details, from the headlight graphics to the Turbo-inspired rear lights, plus a driving impression that covers the quick steering, soft ride, poor visibility, rear-seat space, and the practical limits of the boot and cabin.

If you’re searching for a Renault 5 E-Tech review, electric hatchback test drive, retro EV commentary, or a realistic small car review, this one covers design, range, charging, interior packaging, and real-world usability. It’s useful for anyone comparing modern electric city cars, compact EVs, or looking for an honest automotive review with a nostalgic twist.

00:00back in the day when i was a wee lad these were different times and we had different cars some
00:05of which were absolute garbage and some were brilliant but we look back to most of them fondly
00:11anyway so renault decided there is a business case here and brought back the renault 5 a modern
00:19retro interpretation of it anyway this is a car you buy with your eyes but beside nostalgia is
00:26there any substance in it let's find out
01:10the original renault 5 was in production for almost a quarter of a century from the early 1970s to the
01:17late 1990s it had two popular successors the clio and the twingo but if you are over 40 you probably
01:24remember the original r5 and recognizes strong references renault did with the 5 what bmw did
01:30with the mini some time ago the car was enlarged while maintaining roughly the same proportions
01:36as the original the difference is that the current three-door mini is 80 centimeters longer than the
01:41original by sir alec sigonis and the new renault 5 is only 40 centimeters longer than the first generation
01:48in terms of dimensions the renault 5e tech slots between the twingo and the clio it also replaces
01:54the zoe from which it is also slightly smaller interestingly renault did not actually plan to
02:01revive the 5 but a mock-up presented in 2020 to the renault group chief was liked so much that
02:07the
02:07project was not only green lighted but also fast tracked to put things into perspective about the same
02:14time jaguar began work on a new electric model that won't go on sale for another year meanwhile renault
02:21won the concept car of the year for renault 5 prototype and the production model won the 2025
02:29european car of the year title in the world of car design jaguar moves very quickly but renault must have
02:36broken the track record i really like the nods to the original renault 5 such as the rectangle motif
02:42projected inside the headlights and repeated in the daytime running lights or the lights at the back
02:48which are a reference to the renault 5 turbo i appreciate that renault has not succumbed to the
02:54temptation of using larger rims the 18-inch wheels and high profile tires mean the car maintains the
03:00classic proportions and at the same time is comfortable more on that in a moment on the street
03:08this car turns heads and the standard green pop paint certainly helps but does the r5 drive as well as
03:15it looks i'll start with the powertrain i didn't mention it at the beginning but the renault 5 e-tech
03:26is an electric car we can choose between two versions the urban range which has 120 horsepower and 40
03:34kilowatt hour battery and a comfort range with 150 horsepower and a 52 kilowatt hour traction battery
03:42the batteries are nmc and liquid cooled the promise wltp combined range is 300 and 410 kilometers
03:50respectively in my tests the energy consumption is around 15 16 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers
03:59which in the case of the bigger battery gives a range in my unofficial combined cycle of over 300
04:07kilometers in the city you can easily do 400 kilometers of course we're talking about ideal
04:12weather conditions like i've experienced over the last week the temperature during the day was in the
04:17low 20s and at night it is above 10 degrees celsius the claimed time from 0 to 100 kilometers per
04:24hour
04:24is 7.9 seconds i achieved 8.3 seconds both in normal and sport mode the latter makes the steering
04:31artificially heavier but there is not much more to it
04:37but it is worth mentioning how sensitive the steering is it has a ratio of just 13.7 to 1
04:44this puts it between the alfa romeo stelvio and the porsche macan basically it's a very quick steering
04:52rack in the city the initial turn-in can catch you off guard it's good that the wheelbase is
04:59relatively short and the tires have a high profile so even if you were to clip a curb there shouldn't
05:06be any major damage speaking of curbs the reno 5 needs 10.3 meters to turn around between curbs
05:13this is less than in the obviously larger renault clio and high profile tires and specially tuned
05:20suspension mean that the renault 5 has a supple ride despite weighing 1450 kilograms unfortunately
05:28this also means the car rolls a bit in fast corners and the lack of steering feel does not help
05:35what good
05:36is an alpha quick steering rack when the steering has a fiat feel to it right perhaps the alpine a290
05:44and
05:45the limited edition renault 5 turbo 3e have better steering feel the car is well soundproofed which
05:56makes the audible warnings pop more than one may like the indicator sounds simply irritating now driver
06:03aids can be turned off with one button you can even select which systems should be turned off a very
06:10good
06:10solution indeed visibility however is terrible pedestrians cyclists and cars disappear behind
06:17the a pillars this is unacceptable in what is essentially a city car moreover rear visibility
06:23is also poor and is additionally limited by the rear headrests which cannot be lowered any further in this
06:29car automatic parking feature is useless i almost hit a parked car using it and it takes ages for the
06:37car to
06:37actually park dc charging peaks at 110 kilowatts which means charging in half an hour from 15 to 80
06:46state of charge the car supports plug-in charge technology the renault 5 also has an 11 kilowatt
06:51on-board charger as standard and additionally supports vehicle to load and vehicle to grid
07:08i like the 5 badge on the bonnet which acts as a charge level indicator you can see it from
07:14a distance
07:15whether the car is charging and how much is left i also appreciate that when i approach the parked car
07:20with a key in my pocket the charging status is immediately displayed on the screen inside
07:26something peugeot couldn't manage in the e5008 i reviewed a few months ago now i'm not a fan of the
07:33proximity locking and unlocking i can turn it off but then i have to unlock and lock the car with
07:38remote
07:39control because there is no touch sensor on the door handles the reno 5 cockpit is a mix of modern
07:46and
07:46historical references for example the seats resemble those of the reno 5 turbo or the stitching on the
07:52dashboard is reminiscent of the texture on the dashboard of the original reno 5. i don't know
07:58what the headliner was like in the old reno 5 but this pattern reminds me of the headliner
08:03in the early fiat 126. it's a pity the digital gauge cluster does not feature an old-school skin
08:10imitating the original square speedo in the old reno 5. here i must mention that android automotive
08:17in reno is getting very old very quickly this system debuted in the megan e-tech about three years ago
08:22and has not developed much since to seem like they are on the cutting edge of tech reno has decided
08:29to
08:29add a virtual assistant that can supposedly help you plan charging and i have seen a demo where it answers
08:36questions using chat gpt but either this service has not been activated on this particular test car
08:42or there are some regional restrictions now i am not a fan of having three stocks here behind one
08:50side of the steering wheel but it seems reno customers are less bothered by it than i am
08:57below the display is a wireless charger which doesn't work i tried it with and without the phone cover
09:02then we have cup holders a small storage compartment under the armrest the armrest doesn't have any
09:08adjustment by the way a medium-sized glove box and tiny door pockets reno started designing the r5
09:15before blockchain and chat gpt when 3d printing was still the cutting edge so it now offers some 3d printed
09:22accessories from my perspective they take up space in the cup holders and make unnecessary noises
09:29the seats are comfortable adjusted manually apart from the electric lumbar support adjustment for
09:34the driver there is an isofix on the front passenger seat there are also isofix anchor points in the
09:41back it seems like the rear seats have been designed with kids in mind adults will ride back there only
09:46as
09:46punishment there's little leg room no foot room under the front seats at all the thighs are high in the
09:52air
09:52there at least the floor is flat so you can try to stretch your legs sideways this car is homologated
09:59for five passenger but i don't know anyone who'd want to sit in the middle here
10:04there are no usb ports no air conditioning vents no armrest no door pockets let's go see the boot
10:13which renault claims has a capacity of 326 liters but according to vda standard it's 277
10:20and the latter result seems closer to reality there is a small tray under the floor for a repair kit
10:27supposedly there's also a room for a charging cable because there is no frunk yeah like this will fit
10:33probably without the optional subwoofer there are two shopping bag hooks and this handle for closing the
10:39boot lid is at a very unfortunate angle similar to the one in the cleo 4 your hand slips out
10:45you could
10:46break a nail or something on a cold damp day you just better grab the tailgate and shut it like
10:52this
10:52it's gonna be dirty but at least your nails will be intact
10:59prices of the new renault 5 start at 27 900 euro this test example is a techno comfort range with
11:07options
11:07it costs 36 158 euro the renault 5 e-tech is clearly a lifestyle vehicle with quirks that would not
11:20fly
11:20if this was a family purchase it doesn't drive like a mini but it also costs much less and it
11:26looks
11:27stunning so would you buy this reinterpretation of an automotive legend or maybe you're looking for
11:32something tad more practical let me know in the comment section below if you like my sarcastic
