00:01After two days for the sprinters, it's back to the mountains on stage 12 as the GC battle
00:07resumes. Enric Mass faces another test of his race leadership on Calar Alto, but his
00:13teammates are ready to help him defend La Roja.
00:19For me it's a privilege to be able to defend the red jersey. Working for my team is what
00:25I do best. I think Enric is going to have a good stage today. We will try to be up
00:31there
00:31with the best guys. Enric is in exceptional form right now, so we are going to fight to,
00:36hopefully, extend his lead.
00:39Well, Mass' nearest rival is Primoz Roglic, the Slovenian still searching for his best
00:44form after a training crash in July, but he only trails by a minute and 18 seconds.
00:50If I would have this gap it would be even better, no? But at the end, yes, I have to
00:54accept it
00:55the way it is and, yes, today will be a hard mountain day and just try to give my best
01:03and see what happens.
01:05Movistar will also be charged with policing the peloton on Mass' behalf, which could open
01:09up more opportunities for the breakaway.
01:12I think you could see that it's like a different way of controlling the race, if you compare
01:18to UAE Team Emirates before and now with Movistar and their leaders jersey. I think they go maybe
01:24a bit more back to the old-school way of controlling the race. So, actually, I expect that there
01:29will be, for the rest of the race now, with the harder stages coming up, probably more opportunities
01:34for the breakaways also to arrive to the finish.
01:37The final will be seriously tough as the riders tackle the Alto de Vela Fique and Calar Alto.
01:43The Vuelta Last came this way in 2017 and David de la Cruz finished in 10th place.
01:50Calar Alto is a climb where you have to survive the harder first section if you want to win
01:55the stage. Then, in the easier part, you have to play your cards right or go for it in the
02:00sprint.
02:02Stage 12 boasts 4,500 metres of climbing and takes us to the highest summit finish of this
02:07Vuelta, 2,153 metres. The early part of the stage features shorter and shallower climbs,
02:14but expect fireworks in the final. Vela Fique is 13k at 7.2% and Calar Alto 17k at 5
02:21.6% with
02:23passages at 18%. There could be some big gaps up at the finish line.
02:31Well, there was a rapid start today, with the riders covering almost 47km in the first
02:36hour, in spite of the bumpy terrain.
02:39On the first climb, the Alto de Cabasico, Wabanat took the maximum haul of KOM points ahead
02:45of the man in the polka dot jersey, Santiago Buetrago. The Belgian climbing to third in the
02:50standings and setting the tone for one of the contests of the day.
02:55Familiar faces fighting for the breakaway, including Alexei Lutsenko, Axel Laurence and
03:00Ramses de Bruyne. Some of the top climbers who have lost time were also determined to
03:04get up the road. Meanwhile, one of the GC leaders, Oscar Onley, was held up by a crash.
03:09Apparently no major issues for the Scots, who sits fourth overall, though he did have to
03:14be shepherded back to the bunch. Before the second climb, a group of nearly 30 riders
03:19managed to get away.
03:21127.7km to go. There is a split in the peloton, with a number of riders going off the front.
03:29Plenty of potential stage winners in this move, and even a member of the top ten overall, Omrazel,
03:35who began the day eight minutes down en masse. Van Aert and Buetrago up there hunting polka
03:39points, plus the original trio, Laurence, Lutsenko and De Bruyne, Johansson, Lechnesund and Krone
03:45for UNO-X, Almeida, Bizio, Dunbar, Tukwa, Castillo, Kemna, Hull, Brenna, Burade, this was a breakaway
03:52with some serious firepower. By the time they embarked on the third climb of Collado-Garcia,
03:58the gap was up to over five minutes, with just under 100km to ride.
04:05The average speed dropping as they racked up more and more uphill kilometres. At the summit,
04:11Van Aert and Buetrago went head-to-head for the third time, with five points up for grabs
04:15on this second category climb.
04:21Doing a terrific job here is Pale Bilbao for Santiago Buetrago, who goes early. This
04:25forces Wout Van Aert to have to do the chasing. Buetrago wanted to try and get the jump on the
04:32green jersey at the top of the Collado-Garcia. Wout Van Aert with that acceleration, high cadence,
04:38now comes underneath Buetrago, the Colombian, looking for the five points at the top of this
04:43category two climb. Wout Van Aert seals the deal, he takes the five points, he's won
04:47all three categorised climbs today, with Buetrago taking second place each time.
04:54The riders heading into the business end of the stage, with Van Aert and Buetrago riding together
04:59for a while before letting the rest of the breakaway catch up. After a long descent,
05:04the gap was up to seven minutes, the biggest at this welter so far. Movistar still pacing the
05:09bunch for mass, while the riders at the front were starting to think about a potential
05:12stage victory, especially teams with multiple riders like Bahrain, UAE and UNO-X. Next up was
05:19the Alto de Vela Fique, which was set to do some serious damage. The intermediate sprints positioned
05:24right at the start of this brutal climb. UAE starting to apply pressure with Almeida,
05:30and riders began to drop from the break, including his team mate, Ivo Oliveira and Axel Lohans.
05:37Van Aert though, holding on until the intermediate sprints. After taking another 20 points,
05:43the green jersey said thank you very much and pulled the parachute,
05:48but the top climbers were holding on as Almeida whittled down the group.
05:54Bilbao also saying goodbye after a final effort on behalf of Buetrago,
05:59the breakaway now down to around a dozen riders. Meanwhile, with Castillo and Garcia-Pierna up at
06:06the front, Movistar didn't have too many domestiques left in the peloton and other teams tried to take advantage.
06:14Here we go, here we go, here's the big move. Richard Carapaz moves forward,
06:19and this is a big acceleration from the Ecuadorian. A huge effort from Carapaz, but he wasn't able to
06:26open up a gap. Mass down to just one team mate now in Ivan Romeo. Omrozel and Pizio looking strong
06:32at the front, though they were caught by several chasers before the summit. Buetrago finally able
06:37to take some points without having to worry about Wapan Arts. Romeo's shift coming to an end as Mass
06:43recovered Castillo, and it was then on to the descent to the foot of Caler Alto.
06:56The steepest gradients came right at the start of the climb with pinches of up to 18%. Bahrain
07:02victorious now switching their focus to the stage victory, with Buetrago working for Omrozel after
07:07shoring up his polka dot jersey. Only Leo Pizio and Urko Berrade, a stage winner at La Vuelta two years
07:13ago, were able to hold the wheel, everybody else going backwards.
07:19Further back meanwhile, Decathlon had taken over in the peloton with plenty of support for Felix Gau,
07:25Scotsen, Mühlberger and Riccitello. The Austrian preparing to make his move with several top 10
07:32riders going backwards, Tejada, Berte and Sepp Kuss.
07:41Onli and Karapaz after his earlier attack were also struggling as Gau tried to shake off Mass and
07:46Roglic. Omrozel and Burade, the last man standing at the front, and Omrozel soon went solo in his bid to
07:56take victory and jump up the overall leaderboard. The top three on GC still together before the race leader also
08:04stepped on the gas.
08:06Here goes Enric Mass in the red jersey, he attacks Garland Roglic. The Spaniard is going in search of more
08:14time over his rivals.
08:18Omrozel closing on a famous win for Bahrain, victorious. The young Slovenian also had a chance
08:24to snatch the white jersey from Onli. Mass imperious as Gau and Roglic picked up a few friends,
08:31including Bizzio. They were just looking to limit their losses now, around 30 seconds behind the red jersey.
08:38The situation remained the same in the final kilometres. Omrozel heading for victory and possibly
08:44the top five, with Mass once again proving the strongest from the GC group. The rest were set
08:49to lose more time as another precocious Slovenian prepared to celebrate a breakout win at La Vuelta.
08:58He can pay thanks to his teammates Santiago Bucciago, Peo Bilbao, Mateusz Kovacar,
09:06because this has been an absolute masterclass. The brains at Bahrain Victorious have helped Jakob Omrozel
09:13take a maiden Grand Tour stage victory.
09:17Well this could go down as the day that Jakob Omrozel announced himself to the world of cycling.
09:22The 20-year-old taking his first major victory and becoming the youngest Grand Tour stage winner from
09:27Slovenia, improving the mark set by a certain Tadej Pogacar at this race seven years ago.
09:32The winner of last year's Giro Next Gen demonstrating his immense potential.
09:39I'm not surprised because I know how much work I've put in and I knew that this day is going
09:45to come
09:45sooner or later, but for sure I was not expecting it 100% on the first Grand Tour. So yeah,
09:53I mean,
09:53I still can't believe what I did, but I felt super good. I'm still feeling okay, I'm not tired, so
10:01I don't know,
10:02I'm just enjoying it at the moment. The youngest rider at this Vuelta winning by almost two minutes
10:09from Virade. Vyvetrago, Lutsenko and Vansevenant rounded out the top five,
10:14with Mas putting 27 seconds into Gal, Roglic and Carapace.
10:19The Spaniard increasing his lead after a superb team performance from Movistar.
10:24Roglic is at 1.45 with Gal at 2.06. Carapace back up to fourth,
10:29with Omrazel jumping four places to sixth. 20 more points for Van Aert today at the intermediate
10:35sprint. The Belgian now leads his teammate Matthew Brennan by 77 points in green.
10:41A fantastic day all round for Bahrain as Vyvetrago tightened his grip on polka dots.
10:46Big points in the final leaves the Colombian 22 clear of Watt Van Aert.
10:51And it's game on in the youth classification with only 30 seconds now separating Onli and Omrazel.
10:58Tomorrow's punchy 13th stage looks like a good one for the breakaway with an early Cat 1 climb.
11:03Do join us for that on Friday, and thanks for watching.
