00:05Oh my gosh, this Giants interior offensive line have a nightmare of a duo to deal with.
00:11Primetime Week 1, John Michael Schmitz, John Runyon Jr., and C.C. Maulanoa.
00:18Get yourselves ready and geeked up for Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark.
00:23Now that interior three opened their season against arguably the toughest interior pass rush run-stop duo in the league,
00:31and that's going to be on some Sunday night football.
00:33Three-time pro bowler Quinnen Williams is and has been a problem in both the run and pass games
00:40since he sneezed, blessed, and thanked himself after being drafted by the Jets in 2019.
00:47But last season, after he was traded to Dallas just ahead of the trade deadline,
00:53he posted a 90.8 PFF grade, which made him number one among all D linemen in that span.
01:01His 15 pressures, that was also number one.
01:0427.1 pass rush win rate, yep, that was number one as well.
01:09And he's paired up with a three-time pro bowler in Kenny Clark,
01:13who is the perfect interior defensive tackle to complement and play off of Williams' disruption.
01:20In 2025 alone, 17 games, 36 tackles, three sacks.
01:25Now I know that's not really eye-popping box score type stats and numbers,
01:30but his overall value in Dallas' defense isn't only about stats.
01:36Where he causes the most problems is his ability to hold his gap and clog running lanes.
01:42That's a run game problem just as much as it is as a pass rush one as well.
01:49Pairing him next to Williams means you can't slide protection
01:53or even double-team one guy without opening the door for the other.
01:58The Giants drafted Mauanoa, the ACC's top blocker,
02:0310th overall to help Runyon and JMS sure up the interior of that offensive line
02:09specifically for these two dudes.
02:12So let's take a look at how the Giants' big interior three, as I like to call them,
02:18have their work cut out for them week one in this Blue Rush opponent breakdown.
02:27All right, we'll start here with Kenny Clark.
02:30This guy needs a lot more credit than what I feel like a lot of people are giving him.
02:37Again, three-time Pro Bowler.
02:39They traded for him.
02:41I think he was in that Michael Parsons trade.
02:43They traded for him for a reason.
02:46And this guy has been wreaking havoc or wrecking havoc?
02:49Wreaking havoc in Dallas since he got there.
02:53We'll watch him here lined up right over top of the Minnesota Vikings Center.
02:58So this will be JMS.
03:00He will be going on a one-on-one with JMS.
03:03We're only going to watch the tight.
03:05No need to watch the receivers on these because it's all about what's going to go down in the trenches,
03:11particularly in between the tackles.
03:15And you see him right there.
03:16He puts this center, this Viking center on skates.
03:20And he does it with violence, and he does it with power.
03:24And this could, one, not only disrupt the Giants' run game, but it could put Jackson Dart,
03:34especially year two Jackson Dart first game, it could put him in some pretty disadvantageous situations,
03:43especially if you're not gaining positive yardage on the run game at any point.
03:48You see the getoff there.
03:50You see he's able to lock those two arms.
03:53You see him kind of just bench pressing this Viking center into the backfield.
03:59And here's what, he's controlling the gap.
04:03He has a three-way go on this play right here.
04:06He could go with the bull rush right through him.
04:09He can then shed him, get off, make a play here to the left, or if the back decides to
04:14cut back,
04:14or even, I think that's J.J. McCarthy, decides to play action, try and roll out.
04:20He's in full control right here of this center, of this gap.
04:24He can then dump this center and get off and make a play right over here to the right as
04:31well.
04:31So we're just watching, throws him off, and then he gets the tackle for loss in the backfield.
04:38The Giants cannot afford to have that in the running game on primetime football Sunday night.
04:44So let's just watch it one more time.
04:46Again, it's these big three that we'll be watching, and this was the one-on-one.
04:51The one-on-one block that's going to have to be made against a Kenny Clark.
04:56You can see Quentin Williams here.
04:58You see the double team, I believe.
05:00Double team goes there, which makes Kenny Clark one-on-one with the center.
05:05And you guys already saw the outcome.
05:09All right, we'll watch him on a pass play.
05:12This one was the Giants.
05:16I believe this was Giants-Cowboys week two.
05:20Russell Wilson is the quarterback.
05:22So Giants-Cowboys week two, 2025.
05:25John Runyon, going to have to see him again, one-on-one in a pass, in a passing situation.
05:31Let's watch the play, and then we'll go back, and we'll break it down.
05:37Kenny Clark here, 95, one-on-one with John Runyon.
05:41Gets there, and he gets at Russell Wilson.
05:44I think the difference, and I'll talk about this later, is, well, I'll get into that.
05:49I'll get into that in a little bit.
05:50But right now, lined up out here, shaded inside of Marcus Bowe.
06:00I believe Andrew Thomas was out at this time.
06:02This is a favorable, this is him kind of on that line.
06:06So he's not really playing as an interior nose tackle.
06:10He's playing more as an in.
06:13But you've got the one-on-one with John Runyon here.
06:17Again, you can see his initial, the initial hands, how his initial hands get under Runyon's elbow.
06:25We get taught like that as wide receivers when we're dealing with pressed man.
06:29If you want to control, well, as a receiver, if you want to control that defender's arms and elbows
06:37when they're trying to press you with their hands, in this situation, it's a defender controlling this offensive player.
06:45You want to get under that elbow.
06:47If you get under that elbow and grab, you can now control the hand placement of who it is that
06:55you're going up against.
06:56So you can see with his hands off the line.
06:59Not only does he get off the ball fast, Runyon's hands are kind of dropped here.
07:04His hands are up.
07:05We get taught to keep our hands up like a boxer because it's harder to deliver a blow from all
07:11the way where your hands are dropped and down
07:13than they are when your hands are up and in the ready position.
07:16So already, he's going for John Runyon's outside elbow.
07:22He knows he's rushing towards this outside right here.
07:26And he's going for that outside elbow to control because now you control the leverage.
07:33You control where it is that you want to go because this right hand no longer has any sort of
07:41effect.
07:41John Runyon's right hand has zero effect on Kenny Clark here.
07:46It's this outside, this left elbow that he wants to control to get through here with as much ease as
07:53possible.
07:53And because of the splits and how this pocket is forming, you'll have space here to beat Runyon and get
08:02inside.
08:03So boom.
08:03So here, this is the reset right here.
08:06So now they're back to square one with both hands, both sets of hands now pretty much reset.
08:12Now watch.
08:14Okay, Runyon gets into the pad, gets into the chest here.
08:19But watch Cleen Clark.
08:22Now it's a strength thing.
08:24Now here's the difference between Jackson Dart and Russell Wilson.
08:27Russell Wilson was a statue this game towards the end of his career and his tenure with the Giants.
08:34Jackson Dart would actually help John Runyon here and he'd take off.
08:39He'd get outside this pocket.
08:40That's the difference between having, you know, a statue quarterback versus a quarterback that's a dual threat that has mobility
08:48to him.
08:49So I think in fairness, the sack, okay, I think Kenny Clark won this rep, but I think the quarterback
08:58could have helped the pocket and the protection at this point by getting out of there,
09:03escaping the pocket, escaping the, which is a pretty, I mean, if you look at it right here, it's a
09:08pretty clean pocket right now.
09:10Now you can see the leakage.
09:12Now you can see Kenny Clark kind of come off, take a swipe at Russell Wilson, and then boom, you
09:18get the sack right there.
09:19So looking at it, John Runyon did, I would say, okay to good.
09:25Not great on that rep, but a mobile quarterback like a Jackson Dart could have helped the protection there.
09:33But either way, Kenny Clark gets the sack.
09:35He and Runyon are going to be going at it again.
09:40All right, switch over, watch Quinnen Williams, who, I mean, he was a dog when he got traded from the
09:46Jets to Dallas.
09:50You can see him here.
09:51They line these guys up.
09:52So now you see, again, you see Kenny Clark lined up, head up with the center.
09:58And now you see Quinnen Williams here off in this, off in this, up in this B gap here with
10:08these shaded towards the inside of this tackle.
10:10They move these guys around a lot.
10:13Move them around.
10:14There's different ways you can play them.
10:16You get one to draw the double team while the other one gets the one-on-one.
10:20They can do so many different things within this front for Dallas.
10:26Let's watch the play, my bad.
10:28Let's watch the play, and then we'll break it down.
10:31Some slant heart to the inside.
10:33Boom.
10:34Pete's with speed.
10:35The get-off is elite, guys.
10:37For him to be that big, the way he gets off the football with speed here, and the way he
10:41gets skinny.
10:42I mean, he makes this play.
10:44If he doesn't get there, this could be a big play to Saquon in this Eagles run game.
10:49So this right here, someone's going to have to get hat on.
10:57Someone's going to have to get low.
10:59You're going to have to be lower than a Quinnen Williams to be able to move him and to drive
11:05him out of there.
11:06Like, if you look at it, if you've got Goddard coming and pulling, Goddard is supposed to insert here to
11:13get up to this second level,
11:15or usually third level, but the safety's down so much to where the backers are.
11:20If Goddard gets through here and gets up on this safety that's come down, Saquon has a little bit of
11:26lane here.
11:27But the fact that Quinnen Williams is causing this much disruption and chaos, there's nowhere for Saquon to go.
11:37He runs up into the back of Goddard because of Williams' disruption.
11:42Williams gets in there.
11:43There's nowhere to go.
11:45And now, instead of a promising run, which I think could have at least gotten about 4-5,
11:51and you know, knowing Saquon Barkley, that 4-5 could have maybe turned into 20, 25, 40, 45,
11:59Quinnen Williams shuts this down for a tackle for loss.
12:04Lastly, here's a play to watch him in the pass game.
12:09Let's watch, and we get back to it.
12:20Dude, dude, dude, dude, this is elite.
12:24This is elite.
12:26This is why you trade and you give up what you gave up for him because he made an immediate
12:30impact.
12:31You see where he's lined up, and we talk about how they move these guys around and they line these
12:36guys up.
12:37Now, watch the loop around, and now he gets the one-on-one with the center.
12:43So, this will be John Michael Schmitz here.
12:46Again, you've got to watch these type of games that they play, the stunts that they play within the line
12:52of scrimmage here
12:53on the Dallas Cowboys defensive line in that front.
12:56You've got to watch this front for the Cowboys because they've got guys that can move around in different places,
13:04and they have the speed, the power, and the athleticism to win and win their one-on-ones.
13:10Elite get off.
13:12He gets under the center, and now he gets at Gino Smith here.
13:18Gino, were they former teammates?
13:21I don't know.
13:22He was drafted in 2019.
13:24Was Gino still there?
13:25No, I don't believe so.
13:28All right.
13:29He goes from here.
13:35One, two, three.
13:36That's about three and a half, four yards to now get the one-on-one.
13:43And now he just bull rushes the center.
13:48You can see the center.
13:50Watch the center.
13:51Watch the center's arms.
13:52Watch the arms.
13:53Flail up.
13:54Flail up.
13:56Got him.
13:58You've got no power.
13:59You're now playing too high.
14:01But it wasn't like you made yourself high.
14:03It's because of the bull.
14:05You got hit with the horn of the bull.
14:07The bull rush here gets the center off of his feet.
14:11Now, the guard should have helped him out a little bit more,
14:14but he's so worried about this second-level rusher here.
14:18Now, Quentin Williams has the edge.
14:20He's got him on skates.
14:21Gino gets him down.
14:23That's a sack for the Cowboys.
14:24Cannot have that primetime football at MetLife Stadium.
14:31The interior three has to lock this up, both in the run game and the pass game.
14:39You see the tape.
14:40That interior three have their work cut out for them week one.
14:44But if the Giants want to gash runs between the tackles against these dudes,
14:49then I think they should want to attack Clark with double teams, not the one-on-ones.
14:53You can use Runyon and Mauinoa or even Mauinoa and Schmitz on combo blocks to possibly effectively move him,
15:02and then you can climb up to the second level.
15:05They have to have low pad level against Quentin Williams.
15:11In football, we say it all the time, the lowest man wins, and Williams is great with winning with both
15:18his leverage and his hands.
15:20Guards that play too high against this man get absolutely erased at the point of contact and attack.
15:28Lastly, these are the type of matchups you draft C.C. Mauinoa in the top ten for.
15:35The kid wants that challenge.
15:37He's got dog in him.
15:39In fact, his Miami tape showed that he can win reps clean at the point of attack and contact.
15:46The rookie is going to have to be baptized by fire.
15:49It just is what it is.
15:51In the pass game, though, you can protect Jackson Dart by go quick game at first.
15:57Get the ball out.
15:59Stay in rhythm.
16:00Use quick game as an extension of the run game.
16:02You can also chip Williams off the edge because he lines up there sometimes or in an interior gap with
16:09the running back before you release him to his route or the check down.
16:13That's going to buy Schmitz and Runyon just a half a second more that they didn't consistently have back in
16:212025.
16:23Look, this week one matchup is Runyon and Schmitz proving that they can handle that Cowboys interior talent.
16:31Mauinoa is the wild card in this matchup and has a chance to show that he can be one of
16:37the top rookie offensive linemen in his draft class.
16:41But either way, this interior offensive line is going to find out who it really is in week one.
