00:01We know that the woman, an Indonesian national, moved into the Point Cook home with Chung and
00:07his family in early 2022. And soon after that, she was forced into what the judge called a
00:12prolonged period of domestic servitude, where she was forced to carry out domestic duties without
00:17pay. Chung also deprived her of sleep, proper access to medical care, and didn't give her
00:23enough food. We know that she would often visit co-health centres nearby in the local area and
00:29asked them to provide her with small foods such as crackers because they were, quote,
00:33easy to hide from Chung. The abuse wasn't discovered until eight months later when she arrived at a
00:39hospital and that was after police taxied her there. She'd left the home for several days and
00:44her whereabouts during that period was unaccounted for. But she arrived at the St. Vincent's Hospital
00:49in Melbourne with a swollen ear, a bruised eye and swollen legs and in an immense amount of pain.
00:55And the medical staff also noticed that she looked malnourished. She initially didn't want
01:00to disclose that Chung was responsible for the abuse because they had what the judge described
01:05as a mother and son-like relationship. But after she turned up at the hospital,
01:09that's when the police investigation commenced.
01:12So, Olivia, this woman lived with Chung and his family. Did anyone else face court over this?
01:19Yeah, that's right. She initially moved into the home to take care of Chung and his wife's two
01:23children. She had just given birth. His wife, Angie Liao, was also initially charged with
01:28assisting him in the abuse. But her charges were ultimately dropped during a six-week trial
01:34earlier this year. The court heard that the mother and son-like relationship meant that Chung would
01:40constantly be asking her for money because the family was struggling to pay medical bills from the
01:45birth of the second child and also struggling to pay rent. But as I say, Angie's charges were later
01:51dropped. She did not attend Chung's sentencing today, but we did hear that she's got major concerns
01:56about the welfare of herself and their two children. None of them are Australian citizens.
02:01She also is a Malaysian national. And with Chung due for parole in four years, he will likely be
02:08deported at the end of his sentence.
