US claims EU joined new Iran sanctions push, yet Brussels only endorsed them

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has declared that the European Union formally joined Washington's campaign to sever Iran from the global financial system. Yet a Brussels statement issued at this week's G20 finance meeting in fact stops well short of that.

00:03Washington falsely said it has a new partner in its financial war on Tehran.
00:08U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant announced on Friday that the EU had officially joined
00:14Operation Economic Outcast, the American sanctions effort to cut Iran out of the international
00:20banking system. Launched in late August, it targets Iran's access to digital assets,
00:26advanced technology, gold, commercial aviation and shipping, and sanctions foreign firms and
00:32banks that keep dealing with Iran. The European Commission's statement Besant refers to, however,
00:38welcomes the U.S. campaign without formally committing the EU to it. It says the EU welcomes
00:44efforts at ensuring that Iran ceases its destabilizing activities and engages in peace
00:50negotiations, also through additional economic pressure, including through the U.S.-led
00:55Operation Economic Outcast, but nowhere that the statements say the EU is joining the
01:00operation. Brussels has announced no new sanctions. The EU document was published on Monday on the
01:07opening day of the meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in North Carolina.
