00:03Space isn't really set up for humans.
00:05There's no air, too much cosmic radiation, and its temperature fluctuations could cook or freeze us in moments.
00:12However, there is one thing humans seem to adapt to quite quickly, and that's the lack of gravity.
00:17Recent studies have revealed that despite feeling as though they are traveling faster than they really do in microgravity,
00:22humans are still astoundingly good at determining how far they have traveled during both real-life and simulated space station
00:28maneuvers.
00:29Researchers tested six women and six male astronauts before, during, and after a mission aboard the ISS,
00:35and compared that to 20 study participants who underwent microgravity simulations on Earth,
00:40finding that after a short adjustment period, there were no significant changes to the perception of movement distance that were
00:46expected.
00:47Sensory physiologist at York University in Toronto, Lawrence Harris, says the results of the recent study even surprised their team.
00:53That's because of our inner ear and the information that is disrupted when gravity is taken out of the equation.
00:58The researchers say this is very reassuring, as emergency situations aboard the space station could require precise and calculated movements.
