00:00It was the middle of winter. A hungry lion wandered silently through the snowy village.
00:05Not far away, Benaiah stopped suddenly after noticing enormous lion paw prints.
00:11Benaiah quietly followed the tracks. The tracks ended beside a deep pit.
00:16Suddenly, a violent lion roar echoed from the darkness below him.
00:20He looked down and saw a lion, whispering,
00:24If I leave it, someone will die tonight.
00:27But to understand this, we must first return to the beginning of Benaiah's journey.
00:33He didn't have a royal name. He didn't have a massive army behind him.
00:38He was just the son of a priest from a small town.
00:41But while other men stayed inside, warming their hands by the fire, he was out in the freezing cold.
00:49His name was Benaiah. And this is not just a story about a soldier.
00:54It is the story of the most dangerous man in the Bible.
00:59A man who was chosen by God to protect the greatest kings of Israel.
01:04Without hesitating, Benaiah jumped down into the icy pit.
01:08There was no room to run. There was no place to hide.
01:12Just a man, a wild, hungry lion, and the freezing cold.
01:17The lion roared, showing its massive teeth, and leaped right at him.
01:23Benaiah didn't step back. He met the beast head on.
01:27In a flash of pure bravery, Benaiah struck the lion down.
01:33When Benaiah climbed out of that pit, covered in snow and blood, he was no longer just a normal man.
01:40He was a legend. But what he didn't know was that this little movement, it was going to pull him
01:47away from the quiet life he knew,
01:49and throw him straight into the middle of a dangerous bloody game for the throne.
01:55News of Benaiah's strength spread quickly.
01:58Soon, he found himself fighting in the army of King David.
02:02David was the greatest king of Israel.
02:05A man who loved God, but a man surrounded by enemies.
02:10One day, Israel was facing the army of Moab.
02:14The Moabites were fierce.
02:16They had two brothers leading them.
02:19These two men were known as the greatest warriors in all of Moab.
02:23They were fast, strong, and completely ruthless.
02:28They challenged the Israelites, mocking them.
02:32Is there no one who will fight us?
02:35Are David's men just little boys?
02:39The Israelite soldiers were nervous.
02:41But Benaiah stepped forward.
02:43The two brothers charged at him.
02:45At the exact same time, it was two against one.
02:50But Benaiah was too smart, and his faith was too strong.
02:53With smooth, deadly focus, he fought them both.
02:58He dodged their heavy swords and struck back.
03:03In a matter of minutes, the two greatest heroes of Moab were dead in the dirt.
03:08Benaiah wiped his blade, turned around, and walked back to his camp.
03:13King David was watching.
03:15He saw that Benaiah was not just strong.
03:18He was completely fearless.
03:20Time passed.
03:22The battles continued.
03:24But Benaiah's greatest test on the battlefield was still waiting for him.
03:28Israel went to war against an Egyptian army, and the Egyptians had a secret weapon.
03:34A giant.
03:36This Egyptian man was absolutely huge.
03:40He stood almost eight feet tall.
03:42His arms were like tree trunks.
03:45But the most terrifying thing about him was his weapon.
03:49He carried a spear so thick and heavy that a normal man couldn't even lift it.
03:55The giant laughed as he looked at the Israelite army.
04:00Send me your best.
04:02I will feed him to the birds.
04:05Benaiah looked down at his own hands.
04:08He had lost his sword in the battle.
04:10He had no shield.
04:12All he had in his hand was a thick wooden stick.
04:15A simple club.
04:17His men tried to stop him.
04:19You can't fight him.
04:21He has a giant spear.
04:23You only have a stick.
04:25It's suicide.
04:26The weapon doesn't make the warrior.
04:28And the warrior doesn't win without God.
04:31Benaiah walked straight toward the giant.
04:34You!
04:34Come to fight me with a stick?
04:37Are you a dog?
04:39The giant pulled back his massive arm and thrust the heavy spear straight at Benaiah's chest.
04:45It was a strike that would have cut any other man in half.
04:50But Benaiah didn't freeze.
04:53He moved with incredible speed.
04:56He stepped to the side, letting the heavy spear miss him by just an inch.
05:01Then, before the giant could pull his arm back, Benaiah grabbed the wooden shaft of the spear.
05:07With a massive pull, Benaiah ripped the heavy weapon right out of the giant's hands.
05:13He suddenly realized he was totally unarmed.
05:16Benaiah didn't wait.
05:17He spun the massive spear around and used the giant's own weapon against him.
05:22The giant fell to the ground, dead.
05:25When King David saw this, he knew Benaiah was rare.
05:29David didn't just want Benaiah in his army anymore.
05:32He wanted him close.
05:34David made Benaiah the captain of his own personal bodyguard,
05:38the Cherethites and the Pelethites,
05:41the most elite, deadly soldiers in the kingdom.
05:44Benaiah's job was simple.
05:46Keep King David alive.
05:49For years, Benaiah stood silently by the king's throne.
05:53He watched.
05:54He listened.
05:55He protected.
05:56While politicians argued and princes played games,
06:00Benaiah was the quiet shadow in the room.
06:03He didn't care about gold.
06:05He didn't care about power.
06:06He only cared about loyalty.
06:10But years went by,
06:12and King David grew old.
06:14Very old.
06:15He could no longer lead the army.
06:17He could no longer walk outside.
06:20He stayed in his bed,
06:21shivering from the cold,
06:23even with heavy blankets.
06:25And when a king is dying,
06:27dangerous men start to get greedy.
06:30David had not yet announced who would be the next king,
06:33but God had already chosen Solomon,
06:37David's younger son.
06:38However, David's older son,
06:41Adonijah,
06:41was proud and greedy.
06:43He wanted the crown for himself.
06:45He knew his father was too weak to stop him.
06:48So,
06:50Adonijah made a secret plot to steal the throne.
06:54My father is dying.
06:55The kingdom is mine.
06:57We will throw a massive feast.
07:00We will invite the army commanders.
07:01We will take the crown today.
07:05Adonijah was smart.
07:07He knew he needed powerful men on his side.
07:10So,
07:10he invited Joab,
07:12the supreme commander of the whole army.
07:14Joab agreed to help him.
07:17Then,
07:17Adonijah invited Abiathar,
07:19the high priest.
07:21The priest also agreed to help,
07:22with the army commander
07:23and the high priest on his side.
07:26Adonijah thought he was unstoppable.
07:28They went outside the city,
07:31killed sheep and cattle,
07:32and started a massive party.
07:34People began shouting,
07:36Long live King Adonijah!
07:38But Adonijah made one massive mistake.
07:41He didn't invite Benaiah.
07:44He knew Benaiah could not be bought.
07:47He knew Benaiah could not be tricked.
07:49And he knew,
07:50that if Benaiah was there,
07:52his plan would fail.
07:54Back in the palace,
07:56David's wife Bathsheba,
07:58and the prophet Nathan,
07:59rushed into the king's bedroom.
08:01They warned David about the plot.
08:04If you die today,
08:06Solomon and I will be killed.
08:09King David was old,
08:10but his mind was still.
08:12He knew what he had to do.
08:14He called for the only men
08:15he could truly trust.
08:17He called for Zadok the priest,
08:19Nathan the prophet,
08:20and Benaiah.
08:22Take my royal mule.
08:24Put my son Solomon on it.
08:26Take him down to the spring of Gihon.
08:29Anoint him as king over Israel.
08:33Blow the trumpet and shout,
08:35Long live King Solomon!
08:36He will sit on my throne.
08:38David looked up at Benaiah.
08:40He needed to know that the royal god
08:43was ready to fight.
08:44Because if Adonijah's men attacked,
08:47it would mean a bloody civil war
08:49in the streets of Jerusalem.
08:51Benaiah stepped forward.
08:52He didn't hesitate.
08:53May the lord,
08:54the god of my lord,
08:55the king,
08:56say so too.
08:58Just as the lord was with you,
09:00may he be with Solomon.
09:02We will make his throne
09:03even greater than yours.
09:04And just like that,
09:07the quiet shadow moved into action.
09:10Benaiah led his elite guards
09:12down the streets of the city.
09:13They put young Solomon
09:15on the king's royal mule.
09:17They marched down to the water.
09:20The priest poured the holy oil
09:21on Solomon's head.
09:23The trumpet was blown.
09:24And the people erupted into cheers.
09:28The sound was so loud,
09:29the Bible says the ground shook
09:31far away.
09:33At his secret party,
09:34Adonijah heard the noise.
09:36What is that sound?
09:38Why is the city in an uproar?
09:41A messenger ran into the party,
09:43completely out of breath.
09:44King David has just made Solomon king!
09:47And Benaiah and the royal guard
09:49are with him.
09:49The whole city is celebrating.
09:51When Joab and the other guests
09:53heard Benaiah's name,
09:55their blood ran cold.
09:57They knew what Benaiah was capable of.
09:59They knew they could not defeat him.
10:02Panic set in.
10:03The party was over.
10:05Everyone dropped their food
10:06and ran for their lives.
10:09Adonijah was so terrified,
10:10he ran to the altar of God
10:12and held on to the horns,
10:14begging for mercy.
10:16Solomon showed him
10:17mercy that day,
10:18but the kingdom
10:19was not fully safe yet.
10:21King David finally passed away,
10:24leaving his final words
10:25of wisdom to his son.
10:28But a king cannot rule
10:30a peaceful country
10:32if traitors are still breathing
10:34in his court.
10:35Adonijah couldn't accept defeat.
10:38He tried another sneaky trick
10:39to claim the throne.
10:41He tried to take one of David's
10:43former servants as his wife,
10:44to make himself look like
10:46the true king.
10:48Solomon realized that Adonijah
10:50would never stop trying
10:51to start a war.
10:52He had to be stopped.
10:54And there was only one man
10:56to send.
10:57Benaiah.
10:58Go!
10:59Strike him down!
11:00Benaiah didn't ask questions.
11:02He didn't hesitate.
11:03He walked to Adonijah's house
11:05and ended the threat forever.
11:07Next was Joab.
11:09Joab had been David's army commander
11:11for years,
11:11but he was a violent,
11:13disloyal man
11:14who had murdered innocent people
11:15for his own power.
11:16He had betrayed David
11:18and he had helped Adonijah.
11:21When Joab heard Benaiah
11:22was coming for him,
11:23he ran to the sacred tent of God.
11:26He grabbed the horns of the altar,
11:28thinking no one would dare
11:29kill him in a holy place.
11:32Benaiah walked into the tent.
11:34The air was heavy.
11:36The king says,
11:38Come out!
11:38No!
11:39I will die here!
11:41Benaiah stopped.
11:43He was a soldier,
11:44but he respected God.
11:46He went back to King Solomon
11:47to ask what to do.
11:48Do as he says.
11:51Strike him down there
11:52and bury him.
11:55Take away the guilt
11:56of his innocent murders
11:58from my family.
11:59Benaiah returned to the tent.
12:01Benaiah raised his sword
12:03and brought justice to the kingdom.
12:06With the traitors gone,
12:08the kingdom of Israel
12:10finally had peace.
12:12King Solomon promoted Benaiah.
12:15He was no longer
12:16just the captain of the bodyguard.
12:18Benaiah was made
12:19the supreme commander
12:20of the entire army of Israel.
12:23The boy from a small town.
12:25The man who chased a lion
12:27into a pit on a snowy day.
12:31He was now the highest ranking general
12:33in the most powerful kingdom
12:34in the world.
12:36He didn't get there
12:37by plotting in the shadows.
12:39He didn't get there
12:41by betraying his friends.
12:43He got there
12:44through fierce loyalty,
12:46through raw courage,
12:47and through an unbreakable faith in God.
