00:00Hey Vogue, I'm Ella Rubin and I'm gonna walk you through my everyday skincare routine, my kind of
00:05everyday makeup and then a little bit of a hair refresh. My first step is I'm gonna cleanse my
00:11face with this fanny cream which is kind of my like tried and true, my grandma uses this, the
00:16holy grail for me. You gotta go down to the neck and now I'm gonna wash it off. And I
00:28always try to
00:28rub and not pat because as you can see if I touch anything on my face at all it gets
00:32very red. I
00:33have some like acne scars. Two years ago I got really bad acne for like the first time in my
00:38life and then now we've healed it thankfully. Microneedling has helped a lot and um so has Red Light.
00:48Then I just wait. Okay she's done. I'm free. So I start with this serum.
00:59I had some perioral dermatitis for a while and felt like this was one of the only serums that
01:05wasn't kind of enraging it more so I'm loyal to her. And then I do this Biome Balancing Serum by
01:11Siv. I never really had like an issue with my skin until I just had the kind of craziest
01:18breakout of my life. It was like deep really painful cystic acne and I think it was over the
01:23strike so luckily like I had time to kind of heal it but it was it's painful in many ways
01:28but I
01:28I kind of tried to use it as a time to like detach from you know the way I look
01:35and just like myself
01:36physically and like try to kind of I mean it obviously really really sucked and like I can
01:41talk about it in this way now it sucked at the time but like I just tried to think of
01:45it like you
01:46know if I'm healing this and hopefully this is the time in my life that I will have acne like
01:50maybe
01:51it's a good practice and just accepting like where your face is at and I actually think it kind of
01:55it
01:55helps me um in the long run obviously. And then I also kind of put this serum on my arms
02:00because I have
02:02bumpy red arms. And then my next step is eye cream.
02:10My moisturizer which is this like lovely gel. I used to use really thick heavy moisturizers which I
02:16still do sometimes but I actually realized I don't need them.
02:22Oh an eyelash. I'm gonna make a wish. This is another step in the routine is making a wish on
02:26an eyelash.
02:29There we go. And then I guess my next step is I give myself a little bit of a face
02:34massage.
02:41I grew up in New York City which I am very proud of and I still live there and I'm
02:47a loyal New Yorker
02:48um which I also play Annie in Sterling Point who is a New Yorker too. She was cornerized Brooklyn and
02:54she
02:54has a very excessive skincare routine. Mine is like I got a good one going but Annie is is in
03:01the first
03:01episode she's like full-on going for it and kind of the thing that I enjoyed about that was um
03:07she's
03:08not really doing the steps correctly and she's sort of being very aggressive with her face and her body
03:13and it wasn't really planned that way kind of just like how it just made sense to me like Annie
03:17you know
03:18she's this intense person who's at all moments like operating at just an intense level and when
03:24you're kind of like white knuckle gripping life like that like you'll be I just imagine I just it
03:29came it just made sense that she would do that do her face as well. Annie being relatable characters
03:34like meant everything to me and I've gotten a lot of people just like kind of telling me that they
03:39like get her and are her and know her. I am currently in LA which is why I
03:46have this and I'm kind of ashamed of it like the way I enjoy the perks of LA but it
03:51is what it is.
03:51I also have extremely low iron which I discovered while filming Sterling Point so now I take my um
04:02I take my iron and you're supposed to take a little vitamin C.
04:07My next step is sunscreen. I've not been good about my sunscreen which is why
04:11these are sticking around but I also I like having a little color I like when my freckles come out
04:17like
04:17that's actually something I really loved about Sterling Point is we like Megan really barely
04:20wanted us to put anything on our skin and our makeup artist Skye was really intent on taking
04:25care of our skin keeping it minimal making sure that they didn't look done and I really never had
04:31less makeup on my face on a job and it was like really free and honestly made me wear less
04:35makeup in
04:36my real life. Then I use Aquaphor. As a teenager I was pretty different to Annie in the sense that
04:42like
04:43I'm just really type type B but I do relate to her in a lot of ways one being like
04:48that I
04:49thought like if I just tried hard enough like I could also achieve perfection like nobody's perfect
04:54and it's fine but if I just try hard enough I actually will be and that obviously only results
04:57in pain and suffering and then I use a CC cream. A little bit really goes a long way with
05:02this so this is
05:02actually even a bit a bit much. Fun fact we um use the Mario Badescu or that like drying pimple
05:14cream
05:15on set a lot and then sometimes we just kept it um in the scene like I would just wear
05:19it as Annie
05:20because she's you know struggling with her skin um every time I had a pimple I was like Annie's
05:23struggling with her skin today I guess trying to keep it as real as possible in every way and then
05:28I kind
05:28like to take it down to the neck a little bit just to like match the color I'm actually going
05:34to take
05:35my hair down I forgot I have like those fun clips I've always wanted to be someone who uses these
05:40but
05:40I'm oh my god my hair right now wow look at her next up I'm going to curl my eyelashes
05:48because I always
05:48do concealer first and then I curl the lashes and then whatever was on here gets on there and I
05:53already
05:53do it you get it. I was really committed to and our director Megan is really committed to making sure
05:59that um the characters feel authentically their age and the language feels right and I guess like
06:05getting into that so much of it is the writing but also like you know just thinking back to like
06:10being that age well so long ago um so that was interesting and yeah also I think the thing about
06:16Annie is she's like fronting as an adult and so I kind of intrinsically understood like she's a teenager
06:21being filtered through this like attempt at adulthood she kind of becomes a kid over the
06:25course of the series and you see her sort of you know become a normal teenage girl and not have
06:31to do
06:32a thousand step skincare routine or like be perfect or take care of her father um and I think that's
06:37part
06:37of the beauty of the series and I obviously you know I there's a lot that I relate to about
06:43Annie and
06:44I got to be a part of the process of building her which is incredible but people do think that
06:49I am
06:49Annie which I totally get we wanted to keep a lot of like my natural physicality and sort of like
06:55this
06:55loosey-goosiness but like I am not her but I like walk like her I think I seem a lot
07:00like Annie but I
07:02got voted on set at least like my character fun fact and then I kind of like mix these two
07:07concealer shades
07:13the closet scene was a bit inspired by something in my childhood not the scene itself but the concept
07:21uh the monologue that I do in episode six was partially improv partially I like I don't know Megan
07:31is just so collaborative and like really really open to kind of combining worlds we were discussing episode
07:37six she was like is there anything missing is there anything that you feel like should be in here
07:41that isn't that like people need to know about Annie and I was like I don't know I think that
07:45this is
07:45sort of the pinnacle of the period episode and she's like thinking a lot about her girlhood and like
07:51growing up and what she missed out on um and so I was just like I don't know I feel
07:55like there should
07:55be this monologue about you know that she doesn't remember getting her period like it just kind of
08:01hit me and again Megan being like so clever she was like hell yeah let's let's go and do it
08:06I can't believe I got to
08:08collaborate that way because um essentially I guess all to say is the thing that was you know I was
08:14a
08:14kid who like my mom had this like closet I could like kind of sit in and um I just
08:21did that a lot
08:21growing up I think I just was like a stressed out kid and it was like weirdly she had this
08:25like little
08:26fake candle that I would like light and like meditate and pretend to like have my
08:30shit together at like six years old maybe I am Annie god I'm going to do some kind of like
08:37bronzer contour
08:45And then after I do that contour I go back in with a little bit of this concealer
08:52Oh I also you know what I also kind of with the nose contour I use this lighter shade which
08:58is sort of like
08:59a shadow
09:01Rihanna oh my god Rihanna
09:02I'm so sorry I I've owned this this is not on her because I have owned this product
09:09for years and it was bound to happen great color though it's kind of like the color of a like
09:15it mimics
09:16a shadow
09:19So yeah and then I kind of like to take it into the
09:22Eyebrow a little bit um I feel like it just sort of connects
09:27Everything and this is something I used on on set a little bit is this Benetint but it's like the
09:32darker one
09:39My first ever film role
09:41Was the tiniest parts that you could imagine in a movie called the rewrite and I was 11 years old
09:47And I was so excited to be there and Marissa Tomei was playing my mom who ended up playing my
09:50mom in
09:51The play I did like eight years later, which is
09:55Really wild and
09:57I kind of did like a little little lip contour and I remember just feeling like I was just so
10:02excited to be on a set
10:03Hugh Grant was on that movie as well
10:05And I remember he like came by and shook my hand and was like I heard you the troublemaker
10:10And I thought he was I felt so adult and I was like, I'm a woman
10:13I'm a woman and I'm respected in my industry. That was a very fun first job
10:17I mean, it was like truly two days, but I had the best time
10:19I remember hearing like the crew talk about the wrap party and I was like, yeah, like
10:22What are you guys wearing like I'm um, I might go to this is what I used on sterling point
10:27Um, we have some amazing screen dads in the show jay duplass played my professor and he's someone who's like
10:33been really
10:34A mentor and a friend and like
10:37My hero and in in so many ways and I like to reunite with him was like
10:42Real wish wish fulfillment and also spoiler if you haven't seen sterling point, but he is not my
10:48Biological dad and he is ramona's biological dad and yet I think I look
10:52Exactly like him and with blush. I like to kind of take it over
10:56My nose a little bit
10:58I love these chanel balms and I use them kind of as a highlighter a little bit as like an
11:05eyeshadow
11:07This one
11:11I've been seeing a lot of kind of like
11:14She looks like this person on the internet and someone the other day was like is that like
11:19Getting you down like I was like, no, it's fucking awesome
11:22Like all these lovely ladies that I mean compared to are like beautiful and talented and like I'll take it
11:28all day. I love it
11:29I
11:30Used a few lip liners. I did the road one kind of as like a shadowy sort of thing
11:35I think it's so lovely and then I line a little bit more like specifically
11:40I only really overline like here and there and I feel like that's what sort of
11:45Does the trick
11:48And then sometimes I use
11:50This guy
11:52This is a color my mom has been using
11:54Since like I can remember. Oh, everyone's saying who I look like I look just like my mom
11:58I really look just like my mom and my grandma. She's like one of those very glamorous
12:03Women like always kind of done in some way, but like really still paired back and like
12:08I just I've always found her to be like the most stunning luminous woman and she also um
12:14I could be wrong. I think i'm right
12:16She like competed in beauty pageants when she was
12:18My age I guess and that's how she met my grandpa fun fact. This is my beautiful
12:25Grandmother. I like to kind of do in there and then like very light that's one amazing trick I can
12:30do
12:30I can close one eye at one time and just watch as I
12:34Do this high. I'm just gonna go for it. We're just gonna see what happens. I think
12:41Sometimes I add a few freckles
12:44Sometimes I don't
12:46Today I will
12:50And then I like to take a little bit of this like light shade yeah, so this makeup is like
12:57everyday plus
13:01We're going to do mascara
13:06I'm getting it all over my eyelid. I'm gonna wait for it to dry
13:10And then clean that up while the mascara is drying
13:14I'm gonna do a little spray
13:18This thing is amazing i've been getting to travel so much um for work and i'm very prone to getting
13:23sick so
13:25This is
13:26Mayor help i'm gonna do a little bit of powder. I actually don't have my brush tonight
13:30But i'm just gonna do with my fingers a little bit that will have to do
13:38Hair is coming out people have been very nice about um
13:44My hair and requesting the
13:46The hair routine so I am obviously obligering
13:49I do a scalp massage and I think it's really good for
13:53Like growing hair. I feel like it gets
13:56Things flowing, but it also feels really nice
14:02We're gonna do a little cut today. I know I know this like seems insane, but you can't think too
14:07hard. You just gotta do it
14:09Look at this splinette
14:11Amelie and I on set would pick each other's splinettes and that became a toxic relationship. Can you see that?
14:16It's those
14:18It's those that I pick so instead of picking it I just
14:22Cut it off and then yeah, it's just a little bit refreshed. I'm gonna do scissors down. I'm gonna
14:26Just let her
14:28Be now and I love using this hair milk serum
14:35And then I use some when it's getting real rough at the end some of this like bond
14:40Smoother stuff just so like the ends can kind of especially after I cut it. That's usually when I use
14:44this
14:46Oh, I also still have this mascara on
14:49I'm just gonna wipe it
14:51It's good stuff. Sometimes I mix them
14:54I'm gonna
14:58And then I love to do some of this body oil my grandma's thing was like always be moisturized every
15:05day non-negotiable
15:07This is the final look i'm going to dinner with my friends and I should stop now or else i'll
15:10keep
15:10Cutting my hair and messing with it, but this was so fun and thank you so much. Bye vogue
