00:00So hello everyone, welcome to NS and first of all congratulations for Revolutionaries
00:03about to release on 11th of September. My first question is for Nikhil sir, to make a show like
00:09this set in back in time of course production value, logistics everything is a huge part,
00:14colossal, herculean if I may say so. How did you start off and how did you make sure that you
00:20know
00:20whatever you are doing it sticks to your vision, the larger vision of telling the story?
00:23I think I had a lot of I mean practiced already my Ranji Trophy I had already played and
00:28IPL I had already played now I had come to the test cricket right so I had with Rocket Boys
00:34and Freedom at Midnight
00:35say I had I mean it had I had set the groundwork even the the team even the production my
00:43everybody knew
00:45that what we were getting into I mean of course with Revolutionaries with I think with every show that
00:51we have done it has become bigger and bigger and bigger with Revolutionaries we reached one one
00:57just where where jaha peh freedom at midnight mein mein he teen acre ka set bana hai tha
01:00here peh me me chhe acre ka set bana hai tha jaha peh freedom at midnight mein 96 sets
01:04teh here peh kuj 110-120 sets teh so it just I think so the starting point was the conversation
01:11between Amazon and myself ki they had got the rights to the book
01:16they had bought the book and they wanted to make the book and they said that would you be interested
01:23in you know so my first reaction was aad ekor wapas period or wapas historical karu but then when I
01:30was
01:30understood it ki it's very different yeah jo jo freedom at midnight hai ya jo rocket boys hai it's very
01:37different in that sense ki ye youngar hai the idea of the of all four of them is more about
01:44josh and jasbah
01:45and and and and and so the the spark the chingari that they lit that started some kind of a
01:55parallel
01:55movement yeah and I was fascinated by the characters of Raj Bihari boh sachi dinna chane bhaga jathin
01:59I was I for me Pratiba is something that we we came together we we created her into knowing fully
02:06well what she was going to become we knew what she was had become in the 1920s we said suppose
02:13we what
02:13would she have been in 1915 or something so that that helped so it is very exciting actually yeah okay
02:19and my next question is for Bhuvan Bhuvan uh Rash Bihari Bose is one of the most fascinating uh
02:26personalities from our history uh he got a huge depth uh beherupia you know culinary skills top
02:33notch he worked as a in the clerical department of the british administration plus he was a revolutionary
02:37for you to get into the headspace of Raj Bihari Bose as a legendary person as him what did it
02:42take
02:44it took it took sir's guidance to begin with I had frankly I didn't know about
02:55Raj ji uh I spoke to my friends about it I told them that I am playing Bose in this
03:03show and everyone
03:04went Subhas Chandra Bose I'm like no Raj Bihari Bose yeah so that's so that's what made me more aware
03:12what what I am missing in life or agar mujhe in ka kirdar play karna hai to mujhe kitna kuchh
03:19jana chahiye in ke baare mein aur Raj ji ke baare mein hai kaafi information internet pe available
03:26hai lekin mein chaata tha ki mein kyunki woh kahi bhi zyadha documented nahi hai visually
03:33yeah yeah yeah so I had this liberty aur sahur se permission leke ki sir mein isko I want to
03:38bring
03:38in my own flavor to this character to aap ijazat deen too mein yeh karta hoon agar
03:44aap ko sahi lege ga too I'll continue this for the next 70 days too sir was kind enough to
03:49let me
03:49be aur hamne woh character nibhate nibhate hi show ke dauran I figured out on the fifth or the sixth
03:56day ki this is the sur that I want to take for this character aur kyunki itna sab kuch hai
04:02karne ke lihe kyunki he was such a he was I don't know kaise bolu woh Ravindra Jadha jathe
04:09samazhi aap he could do anything anything he could do everything his networking was also very strong
04:16from great Bengal to Lahore it was amazing you mean aap socho ki social media kaha tha us time
04:19yeah phir bhi north south east west ko jod ke rakhna absolutely sirf baaton se sirf
04:26aap ki planning se woh bhoot bade baat hai aur aise kirdaar ko play karne mein ek alaghi maza hai
04:32absolutely plus ek cheeze jo humare mein common thi ki woh real life mein beharupia
04:37thay because of the British yeah mein aapne characters mein I play multiple characters
04:41to muhje ek tarah se unki saiki se mein thoda asa waakif tha legan usko karne ke liye I had
04:48to
04:49like legit deep down into deep dive into it aur sahi tha maanlab scary bhi hai but karne ko mila
04:57ye bhot bade baat
04:58and gur for you portraying the character of Baga Jatin again as legendary as Hrash Biharji
05:05lots of tales about him and every now and then he we could see him in our stories in our
05:10films one
05:11instance is of is that in there in triple R where he fights with the tiger for you to portray
05:17this
05:17character uh what was his brief to you as in he said you know he got this one third or
05:21the fourth
05:21day uh how long did it take for you and how did you jam with him to get this right
05:26uh so I think
05:28me really the first thing was to get the physicality of Baga Jatin right uh I was in a very
05:35different
05:36space in life before I came on this project so I think first was to get the right kind of
05:41body the
05:42physical training that it required and also to gain those 10-15 kgs uh me Rohit Bhuvan we were all
05:49uh
05:50training a lot in kalari lathi malakham which most of it you will not see in the show but it's
05:58just to
05:59get the physicality right and to get an in on the world and after the physicality I think it was
06:04understanding the psyche which I feel like it automatically uh I came on I think my first shoot
06:10day was around the 25th day of shoot of the show because I think first they were shooting the
06:16Banaras bits by the time it got to my uh my distinct I think the world had sort of seeped
06:23and uh in my
06:24head already because I was sitting at home reading reading the script again and again
06:28I think it was just uh just uh just sort of uh made it that much easier for me and
06:46uh I think it's
06:48not very once you understand the psyche of Baga that that everything else yeah I think is just becomes
06:57easier and easier okay okay and for you Pratibha you're playing your namesake uh in the series uh
07:03I tried to read it up uh with regards to your character but couldn't find much uh you know to
07:08gauge from if you could help me understand her values uh the world the way that she looks at the
07:13world what what's that like uh Pratibha because yes you're absolutely right we don't find much about
07:18Pratibha Lahiri and uh this is what sir told me when we used to discuss about Pratibha Lahiri that when
07:27Chandrasekhar Azad uh you know he when he he was fighting british there was this one last bullet
07:33left in his gun and that moment he shot himself so that british unne encounter na kar pae and jo
07:40unki ashes
07:41that was Pratibha Lahiri that was young revolutionaries ke forehead pe rab ki thi now you think of somebody
07:48who's able to notice that this is the younger generation they need to know the kind of sacrifice
07:54that's been going out there ta ki hum apni country country ko freedom de sakhe and she's making sure
08:00to convey that message ahead to who khud kaisi hogi jab woh 17 saal ki hogi
08:05woh kin societal norms se lade rahi hogi woh kis tarikai se dunya ko dekh rahi hogi and for me
08:13Pratibha Lahiri she she was a curious cat us ko sab jana tha ki uske around kya ho ra hai
08:18like she
08:19was a very avid reader usse bohat interest tha padhai mein and in fact uh jitte bhi letters exchange
08:25hoate the Pratibha and Sachin ke beech mein because she was so smart so sharp she would uh she would
08:32you
08:34just absolutely amazing also the interpersonal relationships that you know Pratibha has with
08:38Sachin the way she explains him about the kind of struggle she's dealing with the kind of world she
08:44lives in you are fighting for freedom because now you know you're 18 and now you want to like come
08:50come on to this but me on the other hand i've been like fighting since the moment i was born
08:55also being
08:56a girl and you know ek ladki ki tarah paida hona all everything that and even with bagha jatin the
09:04kind
09:04of relationship she had or she had with him so i think overall Pratibha i she's so like a
09:12oh energy nahi hoti yaap dikhti hain ik roshni ki tarah mein us tarikai se usse dekhti hoon and jab
09:18mujh uske character me bhi jana tha i think as an actor i feel ek bar jab apne costume me
09:23a jate
09:23hain aapka aapka hair and makeup ho jate hain aap us fifty percent to aap us character ke
09:29tarah dikhne lag jate hain and automatically jab ap set pe bhi jate hain aap uh wo dialogue
09:33deliver karte hain aap apne actors ke saath perform karte hain wo magic kaise translate ho jate hain
09:39sometimes mujhe bhi realize nioh ta ki ki hum souchtai ki haa hum ye karenge go karenge go karenge go
09:43karenge
09:43but sometimes you just have to be honest enough and like surrender yourself with the truth that
09:48you can do so yeah that okay and Rohit for you uh there's this uh few shots in the first
09:55look
09:55when you're doing the colori with the latte and everything uh i want to know the relationship
10:00between violence from you uh how do you perceive it the relationship between violence and the fight
10:06to get things right set things right in the society uh as Rohit what i believe in i do not
10:12believe in violence at all uh i but it's a huge part of nature our food chain is dressed heavily
10:17on violence yeah but you know the times are different no i think back then the time that
10:22we're portraying at that time uh gandhi came in much later at that time violence was the way because
10:28they knew nothing better in fact they had to build their own uh you know weapons they didn't even have
10:34access to it or they had to steal it but now we're living in 21st century the times are very
10:38very
10:39different i've actually i find myself in a position of privilege because i've not had to go down the
10:46route of violence to get my ways you know i am actually provided with everything in life so i've
10:52never even have to revolt for something um sachin on the other hand had no other option and he
11:00according to him he for him raj pihari boss was god he worshipped him he wanted to be him you
11:06know that
11:06was his that was his goal he believed that his family who in fact it's really it's funny that
11:12you asked me this question because sachin sachindranath sanyal believed that his family wasn't
11:18contributing enough into the revolution or bringing freedom to the country because they worked in the
11:25shadows he believed because he knew nothing better he believed that the revolution you're only truly
11:31contributing your contribution is real enough only and only when you're on ground yeah um and i'm so
11:38glad that you know we kind of explore the entire journey of how he understands the importance of
11:43non-violence even in in in a situation like that so yeah as as rohed i do not uh endorse
11:49violence at all
11:50in any way okay and i'll extend a little bit as an actor when you trained in kalari however how
11:57much
11:57ever your training had uh how did it tune your mind did it bring you peace the martial art itself
12:03you know i have to tell you this i feel like this i was talking to nikhil sir about it
12:08a few days ago
12:10i feel like i you know usually as an actor when you are a part of something so big um
12:18you and you put in
12:19so much effort i feel like you feel rewarded once it comes out and you know people are loving it
12:24and
12:24getting all kinds of love and uh you know adulation and stuff but honestly i feel that i've already been
12:31rewarded and i'll tell you why because the journey has been so enriching for me i did you know i
12:37used to
12:37always read these instagram codes you know fitness is a lifestyle and you know you you become fit and
12:43therefore your life changes and it really helps you it's like therapy for you i used to believe that it
12:48was all garbage and people who have nothing better to say say that but i in order to become sachin
12:55i had
12:56to my first like for gurfateh for me the first uh thing that i had to tap into was to
13:02look like him
13:05now him because we didn't have enough information about sachin and what he looked like
13:10nikhil sir decided that he looks like
13:13this man with abs and lots of fitness and he's supposed to be this owl pehlwan in his akhada
13:19and so therefore i had no way to cheat it i had to become it fortunately for me i was
13:24already on the
13:25path of becoming fitter in life and this sort of gave me another motivation your question is whether i
13:32found peace doing the martial arts how did it change your mind it made me so much more confident i
13:38walk into
13:38rooms feeling very very different after having you know become fitter i also feel like it brought a
13:47sense of discipline into my life that i never knew existed like in the sense i i didn't know that
13:52i could
13:52be this disciplined i did not eat when i say not a single piece of wafer for 15 months in
14:01order to
14:02prepare for this character i remember the first time i ate something outside of
14:06my chef's kitchen after all the body shots were done but they weren't really done because 10 days
14:11later he made me remove my kurta again but i remember the amount of discipline it took
14:16i am somebody who loves staying up at night but in order to make sure that i was giving my
14:22body what it
14:22needed i had to start sleeping at like 9 30 in the night so i actually went through a complete
14:28sort of
14:29change of the way i thought the way i looked at my body the way i looked at everything in
14:34life
14:34um and so yeah i feel like my my it's really transformed me as a human being not just as
14:42an
14:42actor okay okay yeah and my next question is for you nichil sir uh if i look at your filmography
14:48as a
14:48producer as a director as a storyteller great depth Kal Ho Na Ho, D-Day, Revolutionaries, Rocket Boys,
14:55Mumbai Diaries now that's a sign of a curious mind and a person who loves to read i want to
15:00know i want to
15:01dwell deeper into your mindset what is it that you like to consume literature art music and what do
15:07you do in your leisure time history i just read a lot of history yeah i mean i i devour
15:12it i exhale it
15:13i mean i mean i inhale it i just i just i just i like i i write like to
15:19read about i don't like reading
15:20too much fiction i read a lot of uh yeah i mean uh yeah i i listen to a lot
15:29of podcasts i don't i and a
15:31lot of music i i keep listening to music more and more um i'm glad that my daughter who's 20
15:37we've gone
15:38through a cycle now because i for a long time i was listening to her music now she's now understood
15:43that
15:43my music is better than her music so so so yeah so uh uh anything any from nusrat fattie ali
15:51khan to
15:51kishore kumar heman kumar mohamad rafi to uh it's a little bit jazz being floyd and and and and and
15:58jethro tull and diastrates and simon and everything everything okay so bruce springsteen you know
16:05coldplay yeah so i just i if i'm not um but now i find myself just i just read scripts
16:14i'm reading
16:15scripts all the time i'm sending notes all the time i'm sending edit notes all the time so i think
16:20that
16:20we are ma is also at a tipping point where where we have found our so-called mojo we have
16:26found our
16:27what what works for us um which possibly makes me think that now maybe i have to change things flip
16:38everything again and and and and surprise everybody you know so yeah so uh nothing i mean it's usually
16:45but but i like to read a lot and i read a lot but yeah that's okay and that's where
16:51everything that you
16:51said you love to read non-fiction not fiction per se more of reality
16:56countless human beings billions of human beings eight billion let's say uh are you do you at any
17:01point of time sense that you know uh the ironies in human behavior uh what is supposed to be there
17:08and how opposed to that they behave in certain situations does it ever hit you like that the
17:13behavior what sorry the human behavior the more you read read into reality uh are you uh made face to
17:20face with the ironies of the human psychology the human mind uh vis-a-vis the way they are supposed
17:24to behave in a certain given situation wow i don't even know how to yeah i know uh i don't
17:29know yeah
17:32i don't know i i i find uh reality more stranger than fiction it is i find it i find
17:39it absurd
17:40really i find absurd how some people behave as when i hear some stories about what things have happened
17:45i mean i i couldn't if i had written it as a scene people would say yeah yeah
17:49yeah yeah whatever right in the sense that if i told you that 12 people came on a rubber raft
17:58and they held a bombay hostage for three days yeah right no one would believe
18:05and it had it had not happened yeah you would say it's not possible yeah yeah
18:08this is this is one of the greatest financial capitals of the world how does it happen
18:15it happened it happened right 12 boys came and they just did what they had to do
18:23so human nature is is always evolving is is is always uh and and when all else fails i go
18:32back to
18:33salim javed and because they have taken care of lots of stuff yeah i love i love my reference points
18:39always like jay veeru my reference points are you know i mean even even rf zakharia asked me how to
18:47play
18:47jinai said gabar singh you know so so i don't i for me is it really tempting for you to
18:55derive material
18:56from there you know the way human beings behave very differently compared to how they should behave
19:02in a certain situation is that your fuel as a storyteller
19:08i don't know it's a very tough question to answer no i don't know i i i i i let
19:12it flow a little you
19:14know more it's about it's about uh interestingly let's just think about this right in this
19:23rohit i knew that he was also somewhere or the other or rather i felt or perceived that you know
19:28here why can't why is nobody else thinking about casting him something else other than what is it
19:33chocolate boy butterscotch boy whatever yeah romance yeah why is not somebody thinking about
19:46whatterscotch boy so i i like the way he as a character he transforms in the show from this you
19:56know brat to to a man who has to sacrifice right in the case of pratiba a lot of pratiba
20:04is just having
20:05conversations with pratiba what does pratiba what is what are the battles that she has fought or what
20:13are the battles that a young actor or a young a female actor in the industry or with is fighting
20:20right how can we put bring that in how can we make that a little more palatable how can we
20:25bring in the
20:26case of i mean bhavan and me when we met for the first time we didn't speak about the i
20:33think we spoke
20:33about rajbihari was for about five ten minutes so yeah i told you something and then he told me
20:38the story of bhavan right i had i had not seen you know and then i started watching then and
20:44then i
20:45remember telling him boss yeh toh yeh kaani hai this is is peh biopic vana na chahiye that that we
20:51were
20:51having that conversation you know gurfatiya and all i i feel that there is so much silence in him right
20:58there is
20:59so much that he is um and i and i played him like that i played bhaga as this guy
21:08who yeah you know
21:09who has his he's almost monotone he's just hardly he when he speaks when he speaks he's very clear
21:16that this is what we need to do this and very emotional highly emotional i played him highly
21:22because i felt that that is that that is the energy i was getting from when i when we were
21:27to chat so
21:27i think that it it evolves from from the people that are around you i mean i i i don't
21:33approve i mean of
21:34course there's lots of stuff in the script but yeah okay and last question uh it's open to the floor
21:39uh very shortly uh let the others talk now ask them yeah open to the floor uh disillusionment
21:46righteousness and passion in tino ko aap kis tarah se dekhne achieve karne ke liye a certain level of
21:51disillusionment in the sense dunyadari ke throon na jaate huwe ek alternative route leke with passion
21:57how do you achieve that me go lagta dunya kya kehti hai aapke baare mein aur dunyadari ke baare mein
22:08aapke baare mein aapke baare mein aapke baare mein aapke baare mein aapke baare mein aapke baare mein aapke
22:13example dee sakta ho ki ki mein jab shuru kiya mein aapke youtube tab aspas sare loge thay ghar ke
22:22operation chur baare mein aap ke waare mein aapke pika دventhja là
22:28main aap aapke us ghas ki us 따라via ngay nidents jaffoo
22:34do logho nne bool diya hapko aapun ki baad mein haa hi GP hir wo merdi tac relate karer
22:39So I understood that if I am in the age of which I am, if I want to reach the
22:46place where I can go or not,
22:48but I need confidence, I need one thing to say to myself,
22:53that someone will tell me, come and sit behind me.
22:57That's the reason for me, the passion of my own, I wasn't deprived of anything,
23:05but in my mind, I didn't know what to do, I didn't know what to do, I didn't know what
23:12to do.
23:14I want to entertain everyone in life, I want to take care of everyone,
23:18I want to take care of people, I want to take care of people,
23:20I want to take care of every kind of emotion that a human being can feel,
23:24I want to take care of people.
23:25So I felt that in that passion, my passion has always come.
23:30And I learned righteousness in that path.
23:34I learned a lot from myself,
23:36I have met such people,
23:38who have always met me with my hands,
23:40and I have never met someone who has said it right.
23:43I have always met people who have never been born.
23:46So that's why I knew my personal worth,
23:50that my son has so much water and so much water.
23:54And so you can remain.
23:55So that you have to have a righteousness,
23:56business bhi banta hai ki aap matlab jittti chaadar utte pair phehlane chihye
24:02maine chaadar hi nahi khari di maine ka phela ke dhekhte hai kitna phehlta hai
24:07kya hoja galt hoja ega nahi chalega bas lekin kabhi bhi aapne aapko kisi or se
24:13oopar na samajna woh maine is journey mein hamisha ek chiz pe dhyan diya ki ye hoana
24:19chihye kyunki kal ko korn aake takhta paladde aapko pata hi nahi hai absolutely
24:24yeh samajna ki hum indispensable hai to bhot wrong cheez hai
24:29toh me ko lagta hai yeh teen jo shabda hai yeh teeno alag-alag stages of life pe har
24:33wanda discover karta hai
24:35mehne passion or righteousness abhi kar liya righteousness thoda mele mein
24:39or nuksan kuch kamiha hai wo thodi shayad life mein or meh seekh lho but
24:44yeh teen cheezen toh me ko lagta hai pardon paaslo da gina
24:46muha pata nahi mehne sawaal kaya jama hai
24:50perfect so that we have reached the end of this conversation
24:56kuch jise baad joe aap kehna chaathe hao yaa mudhse pooshni rahe ghayi ho taa aap kehsakate
25:00ki 11 tharikh ko revolutionaries aagaya aur jo log yeh dekh rahe hun ko pata hai ki show aa chuka
25:05hai
25:05agar aapne nahi dekhai aur agar aap yeh video ke antak pahunch gae hai
