WA Labor is continuing its week of soul-searching after a crushing state by-election defeat to One Nation in Secret Harbour. For some Labor voters, frustration with key issues like cost of living and housing was enough to turn them away as they call for sustained attention on the electorate.

00:02Secret Harbour voters Lesley and David are on opposite ends of the political spectrum.
00:08But that hasn't stopped them unpacking last weekend's by-election over a few cold ones.
00:14I would normally vote Liberal, which I did this time, but I voted One Nation, which I
00:18don't actually think much of, but it's a protest.
00:22Policies really are nonexistent, I think, from my mind, or they're irrelevant, One Nation.
00:30In and around town, a similar story, some pleased to see a Labor heartland seat lost.
00:37I definitely think I thought it was a safe seat in the past, and I thought it will be a
00:42safe seat again.
00:44Yeah, you might have been safe before, but you need to do what you're actually elected for.
00:49Others, concerned about what the change will mean for them.
00:53I'm a little bit concerned about the rise of One Nation.
00:57I'm an immigrant myself, I'm not even a citizen.
01:01Speaking to voters down here after the poll, the message is clear.
01:07Cost of living is biting, and housing pressures are mounting.
01:11Many here hoping the attention this area has received during the by-election isn't a one-off.
01:19Labor says it's taking notes as it conducts a post-mortem of its by-election campaign,
01:24trying to understand how a 19% swing against the government was achieved, how it wins back voters.
01:31Direct conversations with as many people as possible.
01:34People want to know you, they want to see you, they want to talk to you,
01:37and they want to make sure that you've got their priorities top of mind.
01:41Professor Martin Drum says the government has been deliberate in its post-election messaging.
01:47The government's really keen to give the message that it's listening,
01:51that it's hearing the voters' concerns and it's going to do something about it.
01:55So there's a bit of mea culpa there, you know, we underestimated One Nation,
01:59we perhaps didn't see this coming.
02:01A lot of listening and water to go under the bridge before the next state poll in 2029.
02:07I don't know what it means to have you, but just to have you.
02:08A lot of listening and I'll have you in the moment.
