00:08while working in a Northern Territory pub that decided his future.
00:12An old lady said to me, you're wasting your time working for me, you should go and get
00:19your own pub.
00:20And from there, one thing led to another.
00:21Jim has owned 16 pubs, mostly in regional WA.
00:25The pub is the heartbeat of a country town.
00:28I grew up in pubs, Dad's been in public in all of my life, and we moved around to quite
00:32a few different pubs here and there.
00:34Father and son now work together at the Perundry Hotel, 350 kilometres north-east of Perth.
00:40Jim starts prepping the dinner special before the sun rises.
00:44Do it all in the morning, prepare it for him, it's ready for him at 4 o'clock, and go
00:48and
00:48give him a hand if he needs it.
00:50Yeah, no, he's one of the old characters around town.
00:53Jim has no plans to retire.
00:55I have to have a reason to get up in the morning.
00:59And smelling the roses, I'm not ready for that yet.
01:02He's also run two pubs in Perth, but didn't take to city life.
01:07So I just kept going to the bush, better people, greater atmosphere.
01:14And people are real in the bush, they're not Saturday night cowboys, you know.
