00:26He said it's for people who haven't read it.
00:29So, before you walk into that theater, let me show you what even Nolan can't put on screen.
00:35Because it starts with a man the gods decided to destroy.
00:41Odysseus was not a hero the way you think.
00:43He was a liar, a trickster.
00:46The man who ended a ten year war by hiding soldiers inside a wooden horse.
00:50While Achilles fought with his hands, Odysseus fought with his mind.
00:54And his mind made him dangerous.
00:57When Troy fell, the Greeks burned it to ash.
01:00They killed the men, enslaved the women.
01:02And to make sure no heir of Troy would ever rise,
01:05they threw the infant son of Hector from the city walls.
01:08The gods were watching.
01:10And in the burning city, Odysseus committed one last crime.
01:14He dragged a priestess from the altar of Athena and spilled blood on sacred ground.
01:19Athena, who had loved him, turned her face away.
01:22And Poseidon, god of the sea, marked him.
01:25So when Odysseus set sail for home, the sea rose against him.
01:29A journey that should have taken twenty days became ten years of hell.
01:33And in those ten years, every single one of his men would die.
01:37Every one.
01:38Except him.
01:40This is how the dying began.
01:42The first horror was a cave.
01:44Odysseus and twelve men, starving, found a cave full of cheese and sheep.
01:49They helped themselves.
01:50They didn't know whose cave it was.
01:52He came home that evening, nine feet tall, one eye in the center of his forehead.
01:58Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon himself.
02:00He rolled a boulder the size of a house across the entrance.
02:03The men were trapped.
02:04Then he grabbed two of them, smashed their skulls against the floor, and ate them raw, in front of the
02:10others.
02:11In the morning, two more.
02:13That night, two more.
02:14Odysseus did the math.
02:16Three days, and they'd all be gone.
02:18So he did the thing that defines him.
02:20He thought.
02:21He gave the giant his strongest wine until the monster passed out.
02:25Then he sharpened a wooden stake in the fire, and drove it into the single eye.
02:28The cyclops screamed for the other giants.
02:31But Odysseus had told him his name was, Nobody.
02:34So when Polyphemus howled, Nobody is killing me, the others walked away.
02:39At dawn, they escaped, clinging beneath the bellies of the sheep, under the blind giant's hands.
02:44But as he sailed off, Odysseus made the mistake that doomed him.
02:48He shouted his real name across the water.
02:51Pride.
02:51Pure Pride.
02:53And the blinded giant prayed to his father, Poseidon.
02:55Let him never reach home.
02:57And if he does, let him arrive alone, broken, on a stranger's ship, to a house full of ruin.
03:04Poseidon heard.
03:05And every single word of that curse would come true.
03:08The next island had a palace, warm with food and music.
03:12After months at sea, it looked like salvation.
03:15Odysseus sent twenty-two men inside.
03:18A beautiful woman welcomed them.
03:19She fed them wine and honey.
03:21The food was drugged.
03:22As the last man swallowed, she raised her wand.
03:25And twenty-two soldiers dropped to the floor and became pigs.
03:29Real pigs.
03:30But Homer adds one unbearable detail.
03:33They kept their human minds.
03:35They knew exactly what they had become.
03:37Her name was Circe, daughter of the sun.
03:40In Nolan's film, she's Charlize Theron.
03:42Odysseus went in alone, protected by a herb the god Hermes gave him.
03:47His sword at her throat, he forced her to free his men.
03:50And then she did something the films won't show you.
03:52She took him to her bed.
03:53And he stayed.
03:54A full year.
03:56While his wife waited.
03:57While his son grew up without him.
03:59This is the Odysseus no one tells you about.
04:01Not a hero racing home.
04:03A man, flawed and weak, who almost gave up.
04:06And when he finally remembered who he was,
04:08Circe told him the only way home,
04:10led through the one place no living man returns from.
04:14The land of the dead.
04:15He sailed past the edge of the map,
04:18to a black shore where the sun never rises.
04:20He dug a pit, filled it with blood,
04:23and the dead came to drink.
04:24First, a crewman he'd left unburied, begging to be laid to rest.
04:28Then the blind prophet Tiresias,
04:30who warned him of the slaughter waiting in his own home.
04:33Then his mother.
04:34She had died while he was gone.
04:36He never knew.
04:37Three times he reached to hold her.
04:39Three times his arms passed through her like smoke.
04:42And then the soldier he'd fought beside for ten years.
04:45Achilles.
04:46The greatest warrior who ever lived.
04:48Odysseus tries to comfort him.
04:50You are a king among the dead.
04:52And Achilles answers with the most haunting line in the entire poem.
04:56He would rather be the lowest slave alive,
04:58on the poorest farm, than king of all the dead.
05:01Glory means nothing.
05:02The greatest warrior in history would trade every victory,
05:05for one more hour of sunlight.
05:07That is the heart of the Odyssey.
05:09Going home is everything.
05:11Being alive is everything.
05:13But the sea wasn't done with him yet.
05:15Two more horrors stood between Odysseus and home.
05:18And the second one would cost him six men,
05:20one scream at a time.
05:22Cersei had warned him of two final dangers.
05:25First, the sirens.
05:26Women whose song was so perfect that any sailor who heard it,
05:30steered his ship into the rocks, and drowned.
05:33And Odysseus did something no man had ever dared.
05:36He wanted to hear it, and live.
05:38He sealed his men's ears with wax,
05:40had them tie him to the mast,
05:42and made them swear not to free him,
05:44no matter how he begged.
05:46The song came.
05:47He screamed.
05:48He thrashed.
05:49He begged.
05:50They only tied the ropes tighter.
05:52He became the only man in history to hear the sirens,
05:55and carry that song in his head forever.
05:57Then, the second danger.
05:59A narrow strait.
06:00On one side, a whirlpool that swallowed whole ships.
06:04On the other, a cave.
06:06And inside it, Scylla.
06:07Six heads, six mouths of teeth.
06:10Cersei had told him the truth.
06:12You cannot escape both.
06:14Choose.
06:14The whirlpool takes everyone.
06:16Scylla takes only six.
06:18So Odysseus chose Scylla.
06:20And he didn't warn his men,
06:22because if they'd known,
06:23they'd have frozen and all died.
06:25As they rode through,
06:26six heads struck down from the cliff.
06:29Six men,
06:29lifted screaming his name into the dark.
06:32He heard every scream,
06:33and he kept rowing,
06:35because the worst was still waiting for him,
06:37at home.
06:38What killed the rest of his men,
06:40was hunger.
06:41Stranded on an island,
06:42starving.
06:43They did the one thing he'd forbidden.
06:45They slaughtered the cattle of the sun god,
06:47and ate them.
06:48The sun demanded justice.
06:50Zeus answered with a single lightning bolt.
06:52It split the ship in half and dragged every man down.
06:56Every man but one.
06:57Odysseus clung to a piece of his own wrecked ship for nine days,
07:01alone on the open sea,
07:03until the waves spat him onto a green shore.
07:05The island of Ogygia.
07:07And there lived a goddess named Calypso.
07:09She found him half dead on the sand,
07:11and she fell in love with him.
07:13She didn't enslave him.
07:14She offered him paradise.
07:16A cave hung with vines.
07:18An endless table.
07:19Her bed.
07:20And one thing no god had ever offered a mortal man.
07:23She offered to make him immortal.
07:25To stop him aging.
07:26To let him live forever.
07:27Young.
07:28Beside her.
07:29While the rest of the world died.
07:31All he had to do was forget Ithaca.
07:33And here is the thing the legend never lets you forget.
07:36He stayed seven years.
07:38Seven.
07:38But every single day.
07:40Homer tells us.
07:41He walked to the edge of the sea.
07:43Sat on the rocks.
07:44And wept.
07:45Staring at the horizon.
07:46Toward a home he couldn't reach.
07:48The gods offered him what every human being has dreamed of at some point.
07:52More time.
07:53Endless time.
07:54No death.
07:55No old age.
07:56No ending.
07:57And Odysseus said no.
07:59He chose a wife who would grow old.
08:01A son he barely knew.
08:03A kingdom he might not even survive.
08:05He chose a mortal life that ends.
08:07Over an eternity that doesn't.
08:09That is the real answer to the whole poem.
08:12Glory is nothing.
08:13Immortality is nothing.
08:15Going home is everything.
08:17And when the gods finally let him go.
08:19He sailed straight into the bloodiest homecoming in all of mythology.
08:24Years later.
08:25After the wreck.
08:26After seven years on Calypso's island.
08:29After losing every last man.
08:31Odysseus washed up on his own shore.
08:33Alone.
08:34Naked.
08:35On a stranger's ship.
08:36Exactly as the curse had promised.
08:39And he found his kingdom infested.
08:41A hundred and eight men had moved into his palace.
08:43Eating his food.
08:45Drinking his wine.
08:46Courting his wife Penelope.
08:48Certain.
08:48After twenty years.
08:50That he was dead.
08:51Whoever she married would take his throne.
08:53Penelope had held them off with a trick.
08:56She'd marry once she finished weaving a burial shroud.
08:59And every night she secretly unwove what she'd woven by day.
09:02For three years she lied to a hundred and eight armed men.
09:05To save a throne for a husband she didn't know was alive.
09:09Odysseus walked into his own hall disguised as a beggar.
09:12They mocked him.
09:14Threw food at him.
09:15Laughed.
09:16Then Penelope set a contest.
09:18String Odysseus' old war bow.
09:20And shoot an arrow through twelve axe heads.
09:23And she's yours.
09:24The suitors tried.
09:25One by one.
09:27Not one could even bend it.
09:28The beggar asked for a turn.
09:30They laughed.
09:31And let him try for sport.
09:33He strung it in a single motion.
09:35Drew.
09:35Fired.
09:36The arrow flew clean through all twelve.
09:39Then he and his son locked every door in the hall.
09:41What Homer describes next fills almost an entire chapter.
09:46A hundred and eight men.
09:47Trapped in one room.
09:48With Odysseus, his son, and two loyal servants.
09:51Arrows first.
09:53Then swords.
09:54Then knives.
09:56When it ended, the floor was a lake of blood.
09:58And the bodies were stacked against the walls.
10:01This is the homecoming Homer wrote.
10:03Not a man returning to his family.
10:05A man returning to take back what was his.
10:08With twenty years of rage in his hands.
10:11This July, Nolan will give you Odysseus.

10:18A story made for people who never read the original.
10:21Maybe that's a good thing.
10:23Maybe a softer Odyssey is the one most people need.
10:26But the real one.
10:27The one Homer wrote three thousand years ago.
10:30Is darker than any film will ever be.
10:32A man who watched his men eaten alive.
10:34A man who spent a year in a witch's bed and forgot his wife.
10:38A man who chose which six of his crew would die.
10:41A goddess who offered him eternal life.
10:43And he walked away from it.
10:44A man who came home and killed a hundred and eight people in his own house.
10:48This is the Odyssey before Hollywood.
10:50After you've seen Nolan's version.
10:52Come back.
10:53And tell me which one feels more true.
10:55The myth.
10:56Or the movie.
