00:03It sounds like a string section, but like, it's like a string section that's just, like, kind of angry.
00:35Hi, I'm Samir from Flyleaf, and this is my gear rundown.
00:40Flyleaf is on our 20th anniversary tour. This is the gear that I've brought with me.
00:45I have to showcase some cool stuff here. This guy right here, LSL, built this thing for me,
00:58and it's so beautiful, and it sounds so great.
01:03So, thank you, Johnny and everyone at LSL for this guy. Yeah, very excited about it.
01:10Humbucker P90. It's overwound, so it's a little hotter, but it's still, like, warm.
01:18And, like, the goal here was to have a guitar that captured the warmth, but still kind of cut.
01:27Because when I play it, you know, like, I'm not super high gain.
01:31I like a natural-sounding instrument that I can kind of do anything with.
01:37So that's the goal of this guy. And it's, man, it plays so well.
01:42And it sounds really good.
01:45They are LSL pickups. Yeah, so these pickups are made by the company, LSL.
01:50So I'm using 11 to 49 geared areas.
01:54As far as, like, the way I use the knobs, it really depends on the night.
01:58It depends on, like, did I kick my distortion pedal so that it's, like, too fuzzy or whatever.
02:04And I'll adjust it here. If it's too bitey, I'll roll it back. If I need it to be really
02:08round, I'll roll it back.
02:11It really depends on what the sound needs, according to every night.
02:15So it's, I would say it's inconsistent as far as, like, how I use it, but I'm going for a
02:22feeling.
02:23So I'm definitely, I'm constantly dialing it in to get, to be appropriate for the night.
02:30Two tunings. The first half of the set, I'm in, I'm tuned down a whole step.
02:37So it's, and I'm doing drop, drop tuning. So it's, like, drop D, but a whole step down.
02:46And then, so it's, yeah, it's in C.
02:49For the second half of the set, it's in C sharp.
02:52Yeah, so I used to use a lot of different guitars.
02:55This is just one, and it's awesome.
02:57This guy, PRS, sent to me.
03:01Um, and it's been, uh, it's been quite a, uh, quite a workhorse.
03:07Um, the shorter scale, um, I didn't think I would really enjoy the shorter scale.
03:13This is 24 and a half, as opposed to this guy, which is, uh, 25 and a half.
03:18So, you know, the necks are, they are different, it's different.
03:22You know, this is like a standard 25 and a half, and this is 24 and a half, which is
03:27smaller.
03:28But this is the, uh, Santana, the Santana Retro.
03:35So, um, yeah, this is the Santana Retro.
03:38And I, whatever pickups are in here, it's, it's, whatever Santana and Paul Reed Smith,
03:44had, this is their collaboration.
03:48And it's, dude, this thing is, this thing is ripping.
03:51It's, it's, it's awesome.
03:52It, it sounds so natural and sustained, it sustains for days.
03:58Um, Spinal Tap reference.
03:59But yeah, you can still hear that thing going from last night.
04:03Um, and I, I've really fallen in love with the Floating Tremolo.
04:06Which I, I, I didn't really start off with the Floating Tremolo, like, early on in the early Flight Leaf
04:10days.
04:11Um, I was always, uh, hard-tailed.
04:14I mean, I think if you're a Flight Leaf fan, you might recognize.
04:17This guy has always been my main for, for a very long time.
04:20This is the, uh, the Artist Series, uh, Spruce Top Hollow Body.
04:24Um, I think this is a Hollow Body 1.
04:26I don't think this is a Hollow Body 2.
04:28Um, it might be a Hollow Body 2.
04:29I, I don't know.
04:30But it's, it's awesome.
04:32It, it sounds so good right now.
04:34You know, cause I play so, you can see, it's, it's just the things in shambles.
04:38But, but, but still plays really well.
04:40It sounds awesome.
04:41And I, I kind of, look, I kind of, I love the way it looks all beat up.
04:45Cause I, I've beat it up.
04:46I've played it.
04:48Um, but, hard-tail.
04:50Um, and not, not the Floating Tremolo.
04:52So, I was very against the Floating Tremolo.
04:56I thought that, I thought it was cheesy for so long.
04:58Oh, this is the awesome part.
04:59I need, I do need to, see the locks on here.
05:02Strap locks.
05:03I need to play it.
05:05Um.
05:08But with the Floating Tremolo, it's like, I, I, it's really cool cause like.
05:13I get like these, I can add a bunch of tension.
05:15Like I'm not, I'm not using it like a, like a shredder and like, you know.
05:19Or anything like that.
05:20Um.
05:21But I use it to, to add, to add tension to chords.
05:25Uh.
05:26Or, or, or note.
05:27And maybe it's like.
05:28I don't know.
05:29Make it, make it sound a little darker.
05:32Uh.
05:32A little more chaotic.
05:33So, at the beginning of the tour, I was using 10 to 46.
05:37Which comes, which is standard for, for.
05:39Like for, out of the factory, Paul Reed Smith's come 10 to 46.
05:43Uh.
05:44And, it was awesome and it was super fast.
05:47Um.
05:47But just out of convenience and like.
05:49Not having to buy a variety of strings.
05:52Um.
05:52When I had to change strings, I went ahead and put 11 to 49 on here.
05:56Cause it's, it's consistent across the board.
05:57It's easier to, to pack and order strings.
06:00Um.
06:00I do like the, uh, the 10.
06:0310 to 46.
06:04I think in, at home.
06:06I might, I might just keep it 10 to 46.
06:08But on the road, just more convenient to use.
06:10Um.
06:1011 to 49.
06:11As far as the tour goes.
06:13I mean, whatever you're saying.
06:13This is my C sharp guitar.
06:15So I'll use this for a second half of the set.

06:22This is the guitar that me, that made me really.

06:27Appreciate a floating tremolo.
06:28And, and being able to, to use the Bigsby.
06:32Just to, I don't know, just give it, give it something.
06:35Some, something, something eerie.
06:37Um.
06:39I've been using this as, as my C guitar.
06:42In the first half of the set.
06:43Um.
06:44And, and I'm using these guys as like, backups.
06:46But, this guy over here.
06:48And, and same thing.
06:4911, 11 to 49 strings.
06:52It's PRS standard stock everything.
06:54It's.
06:55It's great.
06:55This guy.

06:59An amalgamation of a bunch of stuff.
07:01So this has been like a project guitar for me.

11:35I can get all the sounds I want out of this as opposed to, you know, I had
11:40like three delay pedals and like all these, my board is huge and
11:46cumbersome, but now it's I've distilled it down to this
11:51On the record and for live for so long
11:55I've been using a whammy pedal to do those octave things and now instead of using whammy
11:59I'm just sliding up to them and it sounds it feels so much better
12:04Yeah, I don't know if I don't know anyone else is gonna like it, but I love it. It's AC
12:07-30. It's it's cool
12:08I was in Guitar Center getting strings and in San Diego
12:13And I saw I know I hadn't seen a box this color. It's like that's that's a cool color
12:17So I like plugged it in and turned it up and it sounded so
12:22Beautiful. It's like I had to take it home
12:25And it's been like in I've been using a class a class a B combo
12:31For yeah since almost since the beginning. I mean since I started using two amps on
12:37the value store
12:38And it changes according to room to room, right? I'm not I'm not married to any of these settings
12:45If it's too harsh for some reason, you know dial it back if it's too muddy fix that, you know
12:51Like so it's like it's just it the amp is the amp the guitar is the guitar and like, you
12:55know
12:55Just catering you know dial it in for the room. This is the fop star a drew foppy
13:01Who's a brilliant brilliant man?
13:04He's out of a Phoenix
13:06He designs and builds and he can does everything everything gear and guitar and he's he's he's he's the go
13:13-to
13:13This is all point-to-point wiring
13:17It
13:19It's a plexi thing to it, but also has like a venture thing to it. It's it's it's awesome
13:23And there's an attenuator back here
13:25So I think it's hard to see because that's all it's underneath here. This is the attenuator
13:31There's another some nods over here. I can choose the the impedance
13:35it's
13:36This is one of the coolest amps I've ever played
13:41As far as like the sound and clarity of punches it cuts through without being harsh
13:46Even when I try to get it harsh, it's just like beautiful. The vox is more of like a mid
13:50-range punchiness to it
13:53Yes, and I almost like a like a boxy thing
13:56some people would think it's it would say it sounds muddy, but I
14:00It works for me. It works in the sound and works in the context of everything
14:04This has that that sparkle that that plexi sparkle to it in the frequencies they think
14:10They just can't they complement each other and they fill each other's gaps. I've been using the
14:15big stubby by
14:17Jim Dunlop Dunlop
14:19And it's a one or the two millimeter two millimeter big stubby and I I love the control that I
14:27have with it like that
14:30Before I was using it when I first started we were using on the 60 point six
14:3560 millimeter picks those orange orange ones and like kind of like a floppy and kind of kind of messy
14:40But I was like, you know, I've learned how to play my instrument over the years
14:45I've really appreciated the control of like a of a jet of those thick jazz picks and like the the
14:51nuances and like, you know
14:52Crank your amps and and you want to don't you want to say
14:56Play at 11 the whole time, you know
14:58You can crank your amps and then have nuance in the tones and in yeah, and so I've really appreciate
15:04that the nuance
15:05in
15:06in a the
15:08Cranking the amps using a fatter pick and and yeah
15:13Feeling out the parts and filling out like with with the with the band is doing and if it's digging
15:17if I need a dig
15:18I can dig in and get that get that bite
15:20But if I need it to back off and you'll play a little lighter in that those picks
15:25They still have clarity so articulation in ears. I'm using the
15:30Six four audios. I'm the these are the a
15:3786 I think yeah, they say there's the six drivers
15:41They're great. I thank you six four for for this because it's
15:46really good ears
15:48I was the boat. It's like like a
15:50Someone's you know would say it's the party trick, but I it's I
15:54Use like an effect power or like the big speed or something. It's just to give
15:58It gives a different sound if you know it for me
16:01It sounds like an aggressive cello
16:03So then go go use the height, you know the top strings and you know it gets it's really cool
16:08It sounds like a strings section, but like
