00:03:20Yes, you're right, sorry Martin, a couple of tenths, about four tenths of a second faster than Verstappen on this
00:03:26current lap, the two Mercedes, so with the parabolic we go, we can ride on board then with Kimi Antonelli,
00:03:33one car ahead of him and that gap will reduce, you would imagine, as he picks up the slipstream, that
00:03:40stays at around about 50 metres to be honest, so it didn't reduce much for a slipstream, did it?
00:03:45No, he's called it off at the moment, has Antonelli, he's got to go straight over there, which won't do
00:03:49the underneath his cart, a whole lot of good.
00:03:51That's going to keep Max Verstappen interested as well, isn't it?
00:03:54It is, and then of course, he was very late on the brakes, Antonelli, and then of course got to
00:03:57clean the tyres up for a couple of corners as well, so that's not what they need to be doing,
00:04:03and said I think they should be slingshotting each other is the best way to, won't you, is that like
00:04:10pulling people up a ladder?
00:04:11What's the expression I'm looking for to make best use of this, because Max will not give up?
00:04:19No, you see, and I have all the patients in the world sitting there just watching what's happened, I mean
00:04:25the other thing of course, you tell a driver, you know, just to back off a little bit and go
00:04:29against your racing instincts, often it leads to the odd mistaken error, was that what happened with Kimi Antonelli when
00:04:35he just outbraked himself?
00:04:36Final points placed at the moment going to Oli Behrman in the Haas, Gabriel Bortoletto on the medium tyre is
00:04:44gaining on that Haas.
00:04:45Famous last words, but it looks as if Piastri has now finally gathered enough speed to hold position against Lewis
00:04:53Hamilton.
00:04:55Yeah, I'm not predicting anything today whatsoever, but the gap between Piastri and Hamilton does seem to be growing in
00:05:03Piastri's favour, here comes Antonelli.
00:05:06Back at George Russell again.
00:05:08This happened just outside of the overtake mode for the extra power, that's what they need to do, and just
00:05:14keep pushing.
00:05:16As they disappear off through the curva grande once again, Kimi Antonelli currently in second place, led this Grand Prix,
00:05:24the 12th consecutive Grand Prix that Kimi Antonelli has led a minimum of one lap, and well, to keep that
00:05:31streak going this afternoon has been a brilliant, brilliant job.
00:05:36It seemed like a whole lot of chance of that happening an hour or so ago.
00:05:40No, furthest distance back in Formula 1 that someone's won from, by the way, John Watson at Long Beach back
00:05:46in 1983, what he tells me about that every time I see him.
00:05:51But only one Grand Prix has ever been won from as low as 19th or lower, and that is that
00:05:58John Watson race in Long Beach.
00:06:00As Bortoleto had Behrman in his sights and now has Behrman in his mirrors.
00:06:04Into the second chicane he goes, and that is now 10th place for the Audi.
00:06:10A point for Audi today will be their fifth Grand Prix in a row that they've finished in the points.
00:06:15Russell's had half a second advantage on Verstappen in third place on this lap alone, and that's why they're just
00:06:23beginning to see a slightly more distant Red Bull in their mirrors.
00:06:26And if they don't squabble for a little while, that's the way it will stay.
00:06:30Antonelli ever closer.
00:06:32Yeah, here he goes.
00:06:33Just a couple of car lengths, but he stays and sticks right behind his teammate.
00:06:37And we've got a yellow flag as someone stops out on track.
00:06:43Stroll at that first chicane.
00:06:46Hydraulic issue, as you can see there, stopped the car.
00:06:50Where is that?
00:06:51I mean, we need to see where it is, because they're a virtual safety car they've gone for, which means
00:06:55everybody slows down to the same speed,
00:06:58same earliest time of arrival at numerous points around the racetrack.
00:07:03And can they get that car out of the way quickly?
00:07:07And Karin's got information on that.
00:07:09Yeah, he's pulled over in that runoff area, but didn't quite make it beyond the polystyrene blocks, as you can
00:07:15see there on the screen.
00:07:16So there is a gap, as some cars are choosing to pick properly.
00:07:21Antonelli's coming in.
00:07:22He's been told to box here.
00:07:25And I wonder if Mercedes can't double stack, they won't bring George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in, because they're so
00:07:31close together.
00:07:32And Verstappen, I would imagine, would stay out there and take the lead of this race.
00:07:36But Antonelli being told to come in and box.
00:07:40That's not going to please George Russell a whole lot, if that's the case.
00:07:45So Antonelli, you can back up a little bit, but if Antonelli interferes with Max Verstappen in any way,
00:07:52by trying to create a gap for a double stack, if indeed they are double stacking, he'll get penalised.
00:07:58So he can slow a little bit, but what's going to happen here?
00:08:02And how long is that virtual safety car going to be running for as well?
00:08:06George Russell doesn't pit, Antonelli does.
00:08:09We're looking to see Verstappen pits too.
00:08:12So two of the top three into the pits.
00:08:15Ted, down to you.
00:08:16Yeah, because it's absolutely perfect if you're on the medium tyre and you're up against it getting to the end
00:08:20of the race.
00:08:20A cheap pit stop like this.
00:08:21It's another new medium for Antonelli, and it's the hard for Verstappen.
00:08:26So Antonelli, when he rejoins, he's still going to be mega fast on a new medium.
00:08:32So this is by no means good for George Russell.
00:08:36Yes, he'll have a bit of track position.
00:08:39Yes, he'll have a gap to Antonelli.
00:08:40Antonelli is still going to be absolutely lightning quick on a set of new mediums.
00:08:45And the virtual safety car ends just as they come out onto the track.
00:08:50There it goes.
00:08:51Perfectly timed for them.
00:08:53Antonelli drops to sixth.
00:08:54Verstappen drops to seventh.
00:08:55Moves up.
00:08:56Piastri into second.
00:08:57Then Hamilton, Norris, Gasly into fifth place as well.
00:09:02Hamilton back up into the podium places.
00:09:05First time he's run in the top three here since 2023.
00:09:07George Russell is not going to be happy about this, but the key thing now is the traffic.
00:09:12The traffic between Russell and Antonelli and Verstappen.
00:09:17Can they get through them?
00:09:18How quickly can they get through them?
00:09:20How quickly can Russell pick up pace at the front?
00:09:22Can he get his tyres to the end of the Grand Prix in good shape?
00:09:26So George Russell, well, we're in a tough afternoon ahead of him now, but he's at least got track position.
00:09:32And he's got 15 seconds.
00:09:3415 seconds to play with it.
00:09:37I mean, it's not like the tyres that have done 25 laps are going to be going off just yet.
00:09:41But this is Colopinto on Esteban Ocon down the straight.
00:09:48Did he overtake before the green panel?
00:09:53Very good question.
00:09:55Or are we just seeing him go through like a video game?
00:09:59Well, he certainly did that.
00:10:01Colopinto up into 11th, up to 10th, I should say now, and ahead of Bortoleto.
00:10:07There is Kimi Antonelli with Pierre Gasly, the car in front.
00:10:11Gasly knows what it's like to see the silver arrow coming at him.
00:10:14It happened earlier.
00:10:14Right, 26 laps.
00:10:17These hard tyres have done for George Russell.
00:10:19Well, massive derating at this track.
00:10:22Do you think this is good?
00:10:24Keep this track, keep this track.
00:10:26Derating, it's the harvesting, getting energy into the battery.
00:10:30It's at the high top speed when it derates.
00:10:32And there goes Antonelli immediately.
00:10:34Yeah, it means that he can feel it along the straights towards top speed, derating.
00:10:40And he's charging the battery, and it feels pretty extreme to him.
00:10:45But I haven't heard the call from George Russell yet about, I was leading this race.
00:10:50And why wasn't I given priority on coming in?
00:10:54But they were on different tyre compounds.
00:10:56They were.
00:10:57Six tenths of a second.
00:10:58Antonelli faster than George Russell in the first sector of this lap.
00:11:03And then another two tenths that Antonelli has picked up in the middle sector of this lap.
00:11:07Well, F1 in sight, powered by AWS.
00:11:12Only 15 seconds, the pit stop loss.
00:11:14So that's why Antonelli pitted during there, because it would have been 25 seconds otherwise.
00:11:19There's Max Verstappen, who also pitted during that virtual safety car.
00:11:24Right behind Pierre Gasly and Sergio Perez for not going back onto the track the right way.
00:11:30When he went off the track, he's got a five-second tied penalty in the distance.
00:11:34There is Max Verstappen, wheel-to-wheel with Pierre Gasly fighting this one well.
00:11:39Pierre Gasly, but he has to lose out in the end.
00:11:42These are the key moments for Antonelli and Verstappen now.
00:11:44Getting past somebody like the reigning world champion, Lando Norris.
00:11:48And I think Antonelli will breeze past McLaren with these tyre conditions.
00:11:53He was 1.1 seconds faster than George Russell.
00:11:56On that last lap, there goes Antonelli down the inside on Lando Norris.
00:11:59Easy overtake for him.
00:12:02So if he was 1.1 seconds behind, give it 15 laps, Martin.
00:12:06He's right up there with George Russell again.
00:12:08Yeah.
00:12:09This is now, this looks like a fight for the victory between Antonelli and Verstappen to me.
00:12:14But unless George can just pump in.
00:12:17And we've seen him do it before.
00:12:18Remember Spa?
00:12:19Yeah.
00:12:20When unfortunately he actually was disqualified at the end of it with that stunning run of keeping his tyres intact
00:12:25with good pace.
00:12:27And George is going to need another day like that.
00:12:30Unless, of course, Mercedes say, right, Kimi, we know we gave you the tyres to make sure, as Sergio Perez
00:12:37is like,
00:12:37we gave you the tyres to make sure you get to the end of this race safely because you're on
00:12:41the mediums.
00:12:42We are not going to let you overtake your teammate because that's unfair on him.
00:12:47Powered by AWS, F1 Insight says that Kimi Antonelli in four laps is right up there with Lewis Hamilton and
00:12:54on his tail for a battle.
00:12:56Would Mercedes call off the fight for Antonelli and George Russell?
00:13:01Don't you.
00:13:02Just a question.
00:13:03Yeah, no, I forgot I was commentating, really.
00:13:06I was actually just thinking, I doubt it.
00:13:09Should have said that with a little bit more commentary gusto, shouldn't I?
00:13:13Rather than conversation, I'm sorry.
00:13:15Meanwhile, Karun Chandler, my ears, has just gone, on home ground?
00:13:19What are you, getting all upset on behalf of the Italian crowd?
00:13:23You're not going to tell Kimi Antonelli he can't fight for a win on home ground?
00:13:27Are you joking?
00:13:28Mate, I'm not going to tell him.
00:13:29I'll leave that to Toto Wolff.
00:13:30Well, it's a brave person who does, I can tell you that.
00:13:33Well, it's just a thought, because George Russell will turn around, Martin, if Kimi Antonelli, given that strategy there, Russell
00:13:40will turn around and say, sorry, hang on a minute, what's going on?
00:13:43I was leading the race, you've got to give me preferential strategy.
00:13:45Yeah, I have expected to hear that already, but we haven't, and George has got a race on his hands.
00:13:49A race he is leading by six seconds over Oscar Piastri.
00:13:54Ted's got news.
00:13:56Thank you, Martin.
00:13:56Still down at Ferrari.
00:13:58Thinking about Lewis Hamilton, I know he's been on the radio saying that he's got no power.
00:14:02He needs a bit more power.
00:14:03I take it to mean more powerful modes that they're telling him to be in.
00:14:08And I've asked Ferrari, is there any issues with overheating of the engine?
00:14:11They say no, absolutely not.
00:14:13But Lewis has also been talking about tyres.
00:14:15So if his medium tyres were getting a bit worn, then why didn't they pit him on the virtual safety
00:14:22car?
00:14:23An open question for you, one that I will have a think about, probably between now and the end of
00:14:27the race.
00:14:27Thanks, Ted.
00:14:28I'll look forward to that in the loop book as well a little later on.
00:14:31Verstappen down the inside on Lando Norris.
00:14:34He is now up into fifth.
00:14:36Fastest man on the track is Max Verstappen.
00:14:38Guess what?
00:14:39George Russell's been noted for a yellow flag infringement.
00:14:44More I do not know at this moment in time.
00:14:47But are the stewards going to take a closer look at that?
00:14:50Was that overtaking down when the Stroll's car broke down or what?
00:14:55We don't know.
00:14:56We'll have a look out for it.
00:14:57So fresh tyres, they don't just give you more grip in corners like this, the two Lesmo corners.
00:15:03They give you better braking, much better braking in certain circumstances and better traction, less wheel spin or no wheel
00:15:11spin coming out of the corners.
00:15:12So it's just a win-win.
00:15:14And then because you exit the corners with more speed, you carry more speed all the way down the next
00:15:20straight as well.
00:15:21So it isn't just about going around a corner.
00:15:24There is Kimi Antonelli in the background.
00:15:28And there is Max Verstappen lapping.
00:15:31Sergio Perez, who has a five-second penalty coming his way.
00:15:34Lawson and Hülkenberg still under investigation in this race.
00:15:38And George Russell noted, but not yet under investigation, for a potential yellow flag infringement.
00:15:43The gap, 11.3 seconds, Russell to Antonelli.
00:15:47So it's about four seconds in four laps that Antonelli has reduced that arrears.
00:15:52He's got plenty of time, Martin.
00:15:5453 laps in this race and we're only on lap 34.
00:15:58Yeah, George has got a problem.
00:16:00And the problem is silver and red.
00:16:05But not bright red, I don't think, today.
00:16:09What's Lewis lose in the late 25?
00:16:11Now Lewis has not got tremendous pace there.
00:16:14It's not been a great race for Ferrari in any way, shape or form, has it?
00:16:17They thought they had good race pace and could very much challenge for the win here.
00:16:23On the first corner, Lewis Hamilton into the gravel and sent there by his teammate as they were squabbling over
00:16:31third place.
00:16:31And then a couple of laps later, Charles Leclerc went off and into the barriers of the Parabolica.
00:16:36And that was his race done here for the second time at that corner.
00:16:40It was 25-0.
00:16:42Just let me drive.
00:16:43Drive on a three-day pass.
00:16:46Interesting.
00:16:47Once we heard that radio, it was a Kimi himself saying, just let me drive.
00:16:51Don't leave me alone.
00:16:52I know what I'm doing.
00:16:53Just let me drive.
00:16:54George Russell's concentrating and wants a little bit of quiet in the cockpit.
00:16:59So Leclerc out of this race.
00:17:01We had a red flag.
00:17:03Tire changes up and down the field.
00:17:05Antonelli and Verstappen onto the medium tires.
00:17:08And they've gone back into the pits for another set of brand new medium tires to go to the end
00:17:13of this race.
00:17:14And we've lost the two Aston Martins of Alonso and Stronas.
00:17:17Oh, Lewis has got to go through the chicane.
00:17:18Yes.
00:17:19That cost him.
00:17:20Lewis, sadly, the brakes not grabbing the way he would have wanted.
00:17:25That has cost Hamilton dear, I'm afraid.
00:17:27Another easy pass then for Antonelli.
00:17:30And that puts another fast car between him and Max Verstappen as well in Lewis Hamilton.
00:17:36So that was an absolute gimme, wasn't it, for Kimi Antonelli?
00:17:41Just what he needed.
00:17:42He doesn't need too much help, this young man, but he'll take it if it's coming.
00:17:47And, well, I say the brakes just not grabbing.
00:17:50The engine braking slows the car down.
00:17:52Then the calipers do their job on that occasion, not doing the job in time.
00:17:56Hamilton really struggling for grip, I think, as well.
00:17:58Back end of the car stepping out there for Lewis.
00:18:01He struggled to get it slowed down as well.
00:18:03I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't want to stop for a set of tires before the end of this
00:18:07Grand Prix.
00:18:08Troubles, if he does that now, Martin, he would come out round about 11th in this race.
00:18:14Karim Chandok at Sky Race Control.
00:18:16Who are you watching, sir?
00:18:17I was following Lewis, actually, and I was about to come in, Crofty, just before the virtual safety car to
00:18:21say
00:18:21Lewis was complaining about the medium tyre on lap 27.
00:18:27This tyre is terrible, mate.
00:18:30Yeah, so that is a follow-on to something that was complaining about eight laps ago before the virtual safety
00:18:35car.
00:18:36My point is, Mercedes pitted with Antonelli, but Ferrari opted not to.
00:18:41They chose to leave Lewis out, having heard him complaining about the tyres.
00:18:45Yeah, and the question does have to be asked, why?
00:18:50I set you up for that.
00:18:53Yeah, so, but if you're going to change tyres, do it now and get 20, you know, best part of
00:19:0020 laps worth, 17 laps worth of benefit from them.
00:19:03Don't prevaricate for five laps.
00:19:06I'm trying to think of the answer, which might be, he hasn't got new softs, he hasn't got new mediums,
00:19:10he has got new hards, and they maybe felt at that time a new set of hards wasn't what they
00:19:15wanted.
00:19:16Yeah, I think they probably wish they'd have brought him in now.
00:19:20So, Lewis struggling for grip, 11 seconds off the lead at the moment.
00:19:24So, 25-2, 25-3, let's call it, for Russell, 24-4 for Antonelli last time around.
00:19:32Antonelli will be with him in the next nine laps.
00:19:35He certainly will.
00:19:37The answer to my question is probably Red Bull did, and they put Verstappen on a new set of hards,
00:19:42and, well, his last lap was a 1.24.8, and Hamilton not getting anywhere near that currently.
00:19:49So, it's a personal best for George Russell again now, but it's just not fast enough for him on those
00:19:53tyres at this moment.
00:19:56As we ride down the main straight there, that is Oscar Piastri ahead of Kimi Antonelli.
00:20:01That is Kimi Antonelli now ahead of Oscar Piastri, who is back up into the top two.
00:20:08The young Italian right behind Lewis Hamilton, there is Max Verstappen.
00:20:13Last lap, roundabout 1.1 second, the advantage, Verstappen over Hamilton.
00:20:19So, Antonelli's now got two fast drivers between him.
00:20:22Make that one between him and Max Verstappen.
00:20:25There is Max Verstappen, and behind him, Lewis Hamilton, nothing to defend with.
00:20:30A weekend that started with so much positivity for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari is fast disappearing into the most solemn
00:20:39of Sunday evenings.
00:20:41It was a no-brainer for Ferrari, wasn't it?
00:20:43They've not got another car in the race, even.
00:20:45They had total freedom to bring in Lewis and get that nine-second advantage of the cheap pit stop.
00:20:53Under investigation, George Russell for a yellow flag infringement.
00:20:59So, noted and now being investigated by the stewards.
00:21:03He leads this race by only eight seconds now.
00:21:05From his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, a five-second penalty here.
00:21:09It's just going to put the dampness very much on George's afternoon.
00:21:13Powered by AWS, the Insights tell us, the F1 Insights tell us that in 13 laps, Antonelli is right there
00:21:21with George.
00:21:23Thought it might be a bit sooner, actually.
00:21:24A bit sooner than that.
00:21:25But, anyway, let's see.
00:21:27So, that's really bad news for George Russell, because somebody's seen something, and they've sent it for a full investigation.
00:21:35So, that's not a good sign for George Russell.
00:21:39No.
00:21:42Russell is under investigation.
00:21:44He's doing 25-2.
00:21:45If we could stay within 10 seconds, that could be an opportunity.
00:21:48And that is Tom Stallard, Oscar Piastri's race engineer, saying, mate, you could be right in it for a top
00:21:54two here, you know?
00:21:55And why they're saying 10 seconds is the standard penalty is 10 seconds, unless there are any mitigating circumstances, they
00:22:02can knock it down to five.
00:22:04Karun.
00:22:04Yeah, I'm just looking at it here, race control, and you can see the yellow flag comes up when Stroll
00:22:09pulls over, and Russell maybe has a little bit of under-rotation to the chicane.
00:22:13He's not overtaking anybody, he's not gone off or locked up, done anything particularly unusual.
00:22:21And it was quite a late yellow, you know, as he entered that first chicane, so they'll be arguing the
00:22:26toss.
00:22:27Obviously, the stewards would probably be looking at sector times, and the mini sectors they have every 200 metres, to
00:22:34see if he went too fast.
00:22:35That's assuming I'm right about when it might have happened, though, Karun, or do you know more about that?
00:22:40It is that, isn't it?
00:22:40Yeah, it is, there's a time that's come up, Martin, from the stewards of 16, 17, and 30 seconds, which
00:22:45lines up with that.
00:22:46Excellent, thank you.
00:22:47So, he's got a lift, and he's got to show that he's respecting the yellow flags down there, and that's
00:22:52what they'll be looking into.
00:22:54Thank you to Karun.
00:22:55Eight seconds, the gap between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
00:22:59He only reduced the arrears by about half a second on that last lap.
00:23:02This is how the Drivers' Championship will look, going to the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.
00:23:08Next time out, if it stays this way, it'll be a 52-point gap for Kimi Antonelli over his teammate
00:23:13George Russell.
00:23:14Here comes Max Verstappen, trying to make a move on Oscar Piastri.
00:23:18Down the inside goes Verstappen.
00:23:20Piastri knew he was there.
00:23:21Verstappen had every confidence under braking, and he's back up into the top three.
00:23:25Max always seems to have, just be able to keep the front axle from locking up in those moments.
00:23:32Well, that's good enough at the moment.
00:23:35Currently, Kimi forecast to catch right at the end of race.
00:23:40Oh, I wish we'd have heard the reply if there was one.
00:23:43From George Russell there to Marcus Dudley as race engineer.
00:23:47So Verstappen, are his lap times good enough to be troubling George Russell towards the end of the race too?
00:23:54I don't think so at the moment.
00:23:56We'll keep an eye on that penalty, because as Karim was saying, there might well be mitigating circumstances.
00:24:01And there might well be innocence as well.
00:24:06So that's one aspect of it.
00:24:08Russell then, a new personal best, 25-0.
00:24:11Antonelli takes just three-tenths out of his lead.
00:24:14So this is just turning around a little bit, back towards George's favour.
00:24:19Three-tenths of a second he lost on that lap.
00:24:23But, yeah, Antonelli's tyres will just keep marching on.
00:24:27George's will be getting a bit tired.
00:24:29Meanwhile, Lando Norris, and we're focusing in on him here, has been gaining on Lewis Hamilton the last few laps.
00:24:35He's on the hard tyre.
00:24:36Lewis, we know, is struggling on the medium.
00:24:38Fifth place could be right there for Lando Norris.
00:24:43OK, push the tyres if you feel the tyres can take it, is what the team are saying to George
00:24:49Russell.
00:24:49Oscar Piastri with the overtake mode, sticking like glue to Max Verstappen and being pulled along here by Verstappen.
00:24:58No further action.
00:24:59George Russell on that yellow flag infringement, which is, I got the feeling, is exactly what was going to happen.
00:25:04Yeah, you called that very well, Karun, from what you were looking at.
00:25:08So, game on then.
00:25:10Absolutely game on.
00:25:11George, as I said, he needs one of those racers where somehow he ekes enough speed and durability out of
00:25:18some tyres that have probably had enough.
00:25:20The tyre whisperer is in full whispering mode, Ted.
00:25:24Right, so with no further action for Russell, before it gets really tasty, can I just fill you in on
00:25:29a couple of other things?
00:25:30First of all, well done Colopinto for making up time and space and positions.
00:25:35He dropped to as low as 17th after that off, but now we're back up to 10th.
00:25:39And I've asked McLaren, what's been going wrong with Lando Norris?
00:25:44You know, he won the last two races.
00:25:46They said nothing specific.
00:25:47They wouldn't say it was the brakes that he suffered from ever since they put him on since qualifying.
00:25:53But, yeah, they're just saying he's just stuck there with not as much pace as Piastri, as we see, is
00:25:58now hassling Verstappen.
00:26:00Yeah, before the race, Lando Norris was on the radio, on the team radio, on the formation laps.
00:26:04He said, what can we do about the brakes?
00:26:05They said, nothing, just stamp on them harder.
00:26:08That was the instruction as Piastri, his teammate, gets back ahead of Max Verstappen.
00:26:14Possibly not what we expected here.
00:26:16Verstappen didn't sail away into the distance.
00:26:19Piastri kept with him, and now he's back up into the top three and ahead of him.
00:26:23Colopinto gaining on Sonoda.
00:26:25These are really crucial points in the battle between Racing Bulls and Alpine.
00:26:30And here he goes, Colopinto through the curve of grande, past Yuki Sonoda, up in the 9th place.
00:26:38Verstappen behind Piastri.
00:26:40Hamilton just ahead of Norris.
00:26:42Norris is really gaining now on Lewis Hamilton,
00:26:45who pick up a lovely slipstream down the back straight.
00:26:48Kimi Antonelli being told, be what, 24-5?
00:26:51He did a 24-6.
00:26:53There goes Verstappen, almost into the parabolica.
00:26:56And that's big, isn't it, for Alpine in their fight against the Racing Bulls in the championship.
00:27:02Gasly ahead of Lindblad.
00:27:03Colopinto now ahead of Sonoda.
00:27:05That gap, 16 points in the championship.
00:27:07It was as low as three, but they took away the Monaco podium.
00:27:10And Isaac Hadjar, who's not here this weekend, has got a podium to his name.
00:27:14Here goes Verstappen, locks up.
00:27:17Goes straight on at the first chicane.
00:27:19Hamilton locks up behind Lando Norris, but manages to stay on the track.
00:27:23And for once, Verstappen didn't manage to avoid locking up that front axle.
00:27:29He had to go to the escape road, and Piastri has managed to pull out a bit of distance now.
00:27:33It's what you call the commentator's curse, that one.
00:27:35But Maxwell is very, very deep on the brakes.
00:27:38You can see the sparks as well as the car squatted down under some very severe braking.
00:27:44Well, that'll give Piastri a bit of breathing space now.
00:27:46Yeah, Maxwell a flat spot on his front tyre a little bit there as well.
00:27:50Got off the brakes and abandoned the corner.
00:27:52But Piastri up into a podium position.
00:27:56Let's just have a look at it again.
00:27:57In the background, Norris and Hamilton.
00:27:59In the foreground, Verstappen locking up.
00:28:03And then just as Lewis Hamilton pulls to be right behind the McLaren,
00:28:09it lost the downforce, and he locked up too.
00:28:11See how quick Maxwell was through that chicane, through the polished Irene Bollards.
00:28:15He was getting it full beans.
00:28:17Always as quick as our bus driver, who's been navigating some pretty tight chicanes throughout the weekend.
00:28:23Gap five and a half seconds out in front.
00:28:25Antonelli's just done a personal best lap four this race.
00:28:29Eight tenths quicker than George Russell, who says the tyre is starting to open up.
00:28:33And we're on lap 43 of 53.
00:28:36Here comes Verstappen on Piastri.
00:28:38He's got that straight line speed.
00:28:40Can he get his braking right this time?
00:28:42Into the chicane we go.
00:28:43So lovely from Max Verstappen.
00:28:46Swapping around, he's back into the podiums now.
00:28:49And we can watch Kimi Antonelli, who's taken out four tenths of George Russell's advantage so far on this lap.
00:28:57They're beginning to learn where to use the power and where to defend.
00:29:00And Max then moving across onto the racing line.
00:29:04And now we've got the two Lesmos ahead.
00:29:07And they're not overtaking spots against cars of equal pace through here.
00:29:11But we see a few uncomfortable breeze pass.
00:29:14But actually, these 2026 cars, they are giving us some proper hard racing in places.
00:29:21When the drivers have to finish the move off in the braking zone.
00:29:24That's the key thing.
00:29:25That's what you want.
00:29:26Now, Pierre Gasly's been on the radio to say the track is degrading and starting to break up just a
00:29:33little bit at turn two, which Karun Chandok we know has been resurfaced in the last couple of years here.
00:29:40Yeah, that's right.
00:29:41And actually, Liam Lawson and a couple of other drivers have also reported the same thing.
00:29:44So I can't quite see it on the onboard, but clearly they're feeling it out there, Crofty.
00:29:50And Landon Norris looking a lot more racy, isn't he, against his teammate now.
00:29:55Catching Piastri quite quickly there in the background.
00:29:58And who has lost a little bit of ground, Piastri to Max Verstappen.
00:30:02Hamilton being dragged along with them as well.
00:30:05Look at those four.
00:30:06That's third, fourth, fifth, and sixth in the frame.
00:30:08And separated by around about three seconds, those four cars.
00:30:14What talent on display for third, fourth, fifth, and sixth.
00:30:20Twelve world titles between them, if my maths is correct.
00:30:24And indeed, Antonelli at 24, 4, 7, 8.
00:30:28He told you a 24 and a half, wasn't he?
00:30:29Gapped down to 4.7 seconds.
00:30:32George Russell, tyres are opening up a little bit.
00:30:34That is the way opening up here for Kimi Antonelli to become the first Italian winner of the Italian Grand
00:30:41Prix since 1966.
00:30:44He's the first Italian to be leading the world championship, arriving here at Monza since Alberto Ascari back in 1953.
00:30:52What a win-double that would be for the Italian fans who have seen Ferrari's attempts to be successful here.
00:31:01Flatter to deceive.
00:31:02Can Kimi Antonelli start the celebrations by winning?
00:31:05So, it's turning now then into the two Mercedes.
00:31:09They've finally dropped Verstappen.
00:31:11Verstappen fighting with Piastri.
00:31:13Norris right behind them as well now.
00:31:15A 24-3 for Antonelli that lap.
00:31:18Takes eight tenths out of the lead.
00:31:20George Russell will now once again see the silver nose of his teammate in his mirrors.
00:31:26And Antonelli told to do 24-5 or better.
00:31:29That's exactly what he's doing.
00:31:30And that's going to bring him into play in the closing stages.
00:31:3424 overtakes for Kimi Antonelli in this race so far.
00:31:38One more, Martin.
00:31:39One crucial overtake between him and a possible home victory.
00:31:45For Kimi Antonelli, what a season it has been.
00:31:48Victories in China and Japan and Miami.
00:31:51That brilliant win in Monaco.
00:31:53Spa all from a pole position.
00:31:56But to win here, starting 19th on the grid in his home race,
00:32:00will surpass any of those victory emotions that he's felt in Formula 1 so far.
00:32:05Yep.
00:32:06They pitted Antonelli to help cover off against Max Verstappen,
00:32:09who were on similar tyres at the time.
00:32:12Didn't want to do that for Russell.
00:32:14They've left Russell out front, giving him track position.
00:32:16Has he got enough grip?
00:32:18We're about to find out.
00:32:20Coming to the closing stages of lap 45.
00:32:23George Russell, your race leader.
00:32:26Max Verstappen with the fastest lap.
00:32:28Most overtakes Antonelli with 25.
00:32:30Russell leading for 35 laps.
00:32:34And well done to Audi for a 2.4 second pit stop.
00:32:37The fastest of the race for Nico Hülkenberg.
00:32:3924-0 that lap for Antonelli.
00:32:42Fastest lap of the Grand Prix.
00:32:44Down to just 2.8 seconds now.
00:32:47Quite frankly, George Russell has nothing to defend with.
00:32:51So we can see the damage on the tyre and these vibrations picking up every lap.
00:32:55So let's take no risks.
00:32:56Let's just bring this back.
00:32:58Bring it home.
00:32:59Tyre opening up, graining, he means.
00:33:01You can see it on the front left a little bit.
00:33:03It's a clockwise circuit and where there are any corners worth their name, they're right-handers.
00:33:11So that's kind of almost a don't-fight-Kimmy, wasn't it, message?
00:33:16Should they have thought about bringing George Russell in again?
00:33:20It's a question I'm sure George will ask to his team.
00:33:24But it would have been a green flag pit stop, wouldn't it?
00:33:27Yeah.
00:33:27It would have been bad news for him.
00:33:31They couldn't have double-stacked because they were so close behind the virtual safety car.
00:33:35But that would have affected Antonelli, not Russell.
00:33:38And Russell leading the race, you're normally given the preferential strategy.
00:33:43Yeah.
00:33:45Yes, absolutely.
00:33:46Have we come to Monza for the second year running,
00:33:49talking about team orders or pit stops and swapping strategies that are going to affect the outcome?
00:33:57McLaren last year, Mercedes this year.
00:33:58I don't think there's a right or wrong answer necessarily, Martin,
00:34:01but there's a good pub chat later.
00:34:03Absolutely.
00:34:04George Russell then, his personal best, still 1.1 seconds slower than his teammate,
00:34:09catching him on those fresher tyres.
00:34:11George Russell's tyres are now 43 laps old.
00:34:14Lando might not leave it to the last lap, might not need to.
00:34:17He's really gaining on Oscar Piastri here.
00:34:20Fourth place is there for him and a couple of extra points potentially.
00:34:23And Kimi Antonelli, with the fastest lap of this race,
00:34:28is now very much within touching distance of his teammate, George Russell.
00:34:34Max Verstappen a long way back.
00:34:36He won't be a threat to Russell in this race.
00:34:39I wonder though, if Norris gets past Piastri,
00:34:42is Max Verstappen there to be had a go at if you're Lando Norris?
00:34:47I was just thinking exactly the same thing.
00:34:48Verstappen, Piastri, Norris all thinking,
00:34:50I've got a chance for a podium here now.
00:34:53Absolutely.
00:34:54On board with George Russell on the run,
00:34:57slightly uphill towards the Ascari chicane.
00:35:02Kimi Antonelli through there too.
00:35:05And then we can see from the overhead shot,
00:35:07the fans have stayed,
00:35:09as there could well be an Italian victory here today.
00:35:13I loved it when I was out on track on Friday.
00:35:15Do you remember?
00:35:16I was at Ascari, a grandstand full of people
00:35:18in red T-shirts and polos and caps.
00:35:21And they got up and cheered.
00:35:23And who came through?
00:35:24Kimi Antonelli.
00:35:26The Italians are so happy with so many people to cheer for this weekend.
00:35:30But it's going to go mad if he wins this Grand Prix.
00:36:02Oh, we've seen some great celebrations here before.
00:36:04Four tenths and a few car lengths between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
00:36:09When they crossed the line to complete lap 47.
00:36:13It's a lap 48.
00:36:15He could well be ahead of his teammate here.
00:36:18George Russell having to put up with tyres that have done 44 laps so far.
00:36:22Antonelli's mediums, only 19 laps.
00:36:25Getting a much better traction and grip off the exit of the Ascari chicane.
00:36:29Now picking up the slipstream.
00:36:31Russell can't see him in his mirrors because he's directly behind him.
00:36:34Here comes Antonelli.
00:36:36Will he pull out here to try and make the overtake?
00:36:38No.
00:36:39He'll pick up the extra half a megajoule of energy
00:36:42for being behind through the overtake detection.
00:36:45Now's the place to do it.
00:36:47Watch Monza erupt.
00:36:48Lap 49.
00:36:49Here comes Kimi Antonelli for a 26th overtake in this race.
00:36:56No, is he going to do it?
00:36:57Is he not going to do it?
00:36:58He saves it until the last moment.
00:37:00But George Russell locks up.
00:37:02There's the overtake and Antonelli goes off into the gravel.
00:37:06Well, that wasn't very well executed at all.
00:37:08George Russell manages to survive and what should have been on paper, Martin Brundle,
00:37:14the easiest overtake he's had in the race on the asphalt,
00:37:17turns into a, well, a little bit of a whoopsie.
00:37:21George was using every bit of battery he'd got.
00:37:25Kimi would have passed him easily down the next straight.
00:37:28Instead, he's bouncing across the gravel.
00:37:30Is that going to decide?
00:37:31And look at Lando Norris going through on Piastri.
00:37:35What the f*** happened there?
00:37:37We'll go back and have a look at a moment.
00:37:38That's Piastri on Verstappen.
00:37:41Piastri trying to make his way up into the podiums there.
00:37:46No, he hasn't made it.
00:37:48Norris is still behind him.
00:37:49Let's have a look here.
00:37:51George was defending, as you say, for all his might.
00:37:54Then Antonelli locks up.
00:37:56He can't stay on the track.
00:37:57Because he's gone on to the broken up piece of track.
00:38:00He's on all those marbles there.
00:38:02And that's what happened there.
00:38:05But, so, yeah, talk about own goal.
00:38:10Anyway, we'll get another chance, I think, before the end of this Grand Prix
00:38:14to see that happen once again in terms of the overtake opportunity.
00:38:19And what I think was happening there was it was Norris and Piastri, Martin.
00:38:23Yeah.
00:38:23Piastri back ahead of Norris, who got ahead of his teammate down the main straight.
00:38:29Their squabble has allowed Max Verstappen to put a bit of distance
00:38:33between himself and Oscar Piastri.
00:38:35Two seconds at the gap now as they try and come back again.
00:38:40Right, here we go.
00:38:41Kimi Antonelli chasing George Russell for first.
00:38:45That much we do know.
00:38:46Is that overtake coming?
00:38:48Has George Russell managed to survive it?
00:38:50Oh, that is so wobbly from Russell.
00:38:51We'll just keep it clean.
00:38:52No risks here.
00:38:54I wasn't sure George Russell was keeping it dirty before.
00:38:58He was Dan Deere on the brakes, but he's leading the Grand Prix.
00:39:01He wants a World Championship as well.
00:39:03So, oh, that's very wide there for Kimi Antonelli.
00:39:07But here he comes.
00:39:08He'll try and catch Russell by surprise.
00:39:10He's done it under the banking of the old track.
00:39:13On the newer track here, Kimi Antonelli leads the Italian Grand Prix.
00:39:18They rise in the grandstands.
00:39:20Lap 50 of 53.
00:39:23We have once again a new race leader.
00:39:25Once again an Italian driver out in front.
00:39:29But on this occasion with the extra tyre grip, the extra momentum and the Forza to surely go on and
00:39:37win his home Grand Prix.
00:39:39Started my grid walk at the back of the grid alongside his car.
00:39:44Unbelievable.
00:39:46Oh, you can hear the applause as they stand and cheer him on.
00:39:50Just keep it clean, Kimi.
00:39:52No risks.
00:40:22Pete Bonington exercising caution.
00:40:23He's got the momentum, goes onto the grass and just backs out of that move.
00:40:28That could have been very, very nasty indeed at high speed.
00:40:33Yeah, you can fill your radiated ducts up or your brake ducts or anything if you're out there.
00:40:38Certainly if you're behind another car for the brake ducts.
00:40:40But again.
00:40:43Yeah, he pushed me off.
00:40:45The house is very dangerous.
00:40:46He moved back at me after I went to the inside.
00:40:50And no love lost there as well.
00:40:52Down at the McLaren.
00:40:53Let's have a look through the curve of Grand A.
00:40:55We go.
00:40:56It's the active area on both cars opening.
00:40:59Was there ever a gap there, Martin?
00:41:03Yes, there was a gap when he moved out there.
00:41:05But it was skinny, wasn't it?
00:41:06It was barely more than the width of a McLaren.
00:41:10And the Williams then that's presumably is lapped.
00:41:15Yeah.
00:41:15And on fresher tyres is hanging on to them.
00:41:17Which he's entitled to do.
00:41:19He's entitled to overtake as well.
00:41:22Is the Williams of Alex Albon.
00:41:24And Lando Norris actually might find himself getting overtaken here.
00:41:27If Alex Albon really fancies going for the move.
00:41:31They've got a couple of laps to go.
00:41:34To try and hold on or gain a place.
00:41:37Meanwhile, the gap over a second.
00:41:40Kimi Antonelli to George Russell.
00:41:43George just did a 24-3-9-0.
00:41:46A fraction faster than Antonelli in the lead.
00:41:49I know he got a bit of overtake through that lap.
00:41:55That might have been what helps him.
00:41:57But that gap is opening up on this lap.
00:42:00Oscar Instruction from Pitwall.
00:42:01Clean racing, please.
00:42:02Clean racing.
00:42:03Oscar Piastri would dearly love a fourth place here today.
00:42:08It's been a much better race for Oscar Piastri than some of his recent exploits.
00:42:15Hasn't finished as high as fourth since the Austrian Grand Prix back at the end of June.
00:42:21Around the Parabolica then comes Kimi Antonelli.
00:42:25Next time he does that, it'll be the final corner of his home race.
00:42:29He has got 3.6 miles to get used to the winning feeling in front of his home fans.
00:42:36And what a race.
00:42:37What hard work it's been to try and achieve this from the back of the grid.
00:42:41It's what a race it has been from first to last and from last to first.
00:42:47There's been action everywhere.
00:42:48Plenty Kirby in turn one.
00:42:50This is the shrapnel in the broken up surface in turn two.
00:42:54Keeping an eye on Norris and Piastri.
00:42:57And has Piastri stopped?
00:42:59No.
00:43:00He just disappeared off the driver track momentarily.
00:43:02Norris has gone through the gravel though.
00:43:04And Piastri will hold on to that fourth place.
00:43:07Norris was putting him under pressure but outbraked himself into that chicane.
00:43:12Six career race wins for Kimi Antonelli.
00:43:15Here comes Norris back at Piastri.
00:43:18Nothing doing into the Della Rogia.
00:43:20This seventh win for Kimi Antonelli will make him the most successful Italian F1 driver since Alberto Ascari.
00:43:27Their last champion in 1953.
00:43:30And he has got quite a career ahead of him to become the most successful Italian driver of all time.
00:43:37He is the first Italian to arrive at his home Grand Prix, leading the world championship since 1953.
00:43:44He is the first Italian to win his home Grand Prix since 1966.
00:43:50It was six career wins.
00:43:52Now at seven, Kimi Antonelli wins the Italian Grand Prix.
00:43:58And on a bad day for Ferrari, sends the Tifosi home with a home win on the track for the
00:44:05young 20-year-old championship leader.
00:44:08Incredible scenes.
00:44:09From 19th on the grid, he comes home to finish first.
00:44:13It's a Mercedes 1-2, Verstappen on the podium alongside them.
00:44:18Lando Norris got past Oscar Piastri on that final lap to finish fourth.
00:44:24Lewis Hamilton sixth and Pierre Gasly started on pole.
00:44:27Comes home to finish seventh ahead of Arvid Lindblad.
00:44:31Forza Kimi.
00:44:32Yes!
00:44:33Forza Kimi!
00:44:34Yes!
00:44:35Yes!
00:44:36Oh my God!
00:44:38My God!
00:44:41Forza Kimi.
00:44:48Just like being home, mate, on the sim.
00:44:51There's nothing like being at home, but what a victory.
00:44:56From 19th to 1st, Martin Brundle.
00:44:59And just to underline it, comfortably the new fastest lap of the Grand Prix on the final tour.
00:45:05Wanted to get that one in as well.
00:45:07So what a stunning performance.
00:45:09King Kimi.
00:45:11Well, he is certainly the young Prince, fast-becoming King Kimi round here.
00:45:17Behind Arvid Lindblad, Franco Colopinto, finished in ninth.
00:45:21Yuki Tsunoda in his second race on his return to Formula 1,
00:45:25bringing home the final points placed ahead of Bortoleto and Hulkambo for Audi.
00:45:29Sainz and Lawson, Baerman and Ocon, Albon, Perez and Bottas.
00:45:32Beautiful work there, Kimi.
00:45:34Ah!
00:45:35Oh my God!
00:45:37Oh, it feels like a dream.
00:45:40Don't worry, when you get back, I'll give you a pinch.
00:45:42Jimmy Grande, the hero.
00:45:43My Italian, our Italian hero.
00:45:45He so deserved it.
00:45:46It was a fantastic lap.
00:45:47I hated the last one, but it was fantastic.
00:45:52Well, well, well.
00:45:54Whatever he does, he does it with a smile on his face and so much passion and enthusiasm in his
00:46:01heart, Martin Brundle.
00:46:02And whatever he does fails to surprise us.
00:46:06That's the thing about Kimi Antonelli.
00:46:08He's just keeping his head, isn't he?
00:46:10And that first lap, so patient in places, so aggressive.
00:46:14He knew what to do.
00:46:15He knew when to chance his luck.
00:46:18And then, of course, the safety car played into his hands nicely for another standing start.
00:46:24But he's just shown such great pace, such guile coming through the pack like that.
00:46:30Yes, Kimi!
00:46:31What a drive!
00:46:33Thank you, Turkey.
00:46:35Grazie, ragazzi.
00:46:36Grazie for the support.
00:46:38Oh, dear.
00:46:42And he is entitled to milk every single bit of the emotion and the moments out on track.
00:46:51What a podium this is going to be, isn't it?
00:46:55With that amazing podium over the track.
00:46:57So what Toto was referring to is, I hated that lap.
00:47:02He meant the last lap when instead of coasting in,
00:47:05and Kimi decided to give it full beans for the new fastest lap.
00:47:09But Kimi knows there's a league table amongst the greats of pole positions,
00:47:13of victories, of championships, of fastest laps.
00:47:16For the 50th time in the history of the Formula One World Championship.
00:47:20An Italian driver returns to Park Fermat, and the P1 is waiting for him.
00:47:27The 50th Grand Prix win for an Italian driver takes place here in Italy.
00:47:36You just can't write this sort of script.
00:47:39It has to happen in the moment.
00:47:41And this moment belongs to Italy and to Kimi,
00:47:46who I'm sure is still crying jubilant tears of emotion in that crash.
00:47:52Helmet shakes his head, maybe you can't believe what's happened today.
00:47:55What a wild race that was, wasn't it?
00:47:58For passes, repasses.
00:48:00Max put in a, just relentless, wasn't it?
00:48:03He wouldn't give up, but he hadn't got the pace to match.
00:48:07To match the two Mercedes in the end.
00:48:10Kimi's dad.
00:48:12Max going over to say congratulations to Lando Norris, also applauding.
00:48:18Kimi Antonelli giving you a little pat on the crash helmet.
00:48:22Difficult day for George, did all he could.
00:48:25The cards didn't fall for him, did they?
00:48:28With the red flag, with the safety car.
00:48:31He was on the tyres, he wanted to go long.
00:48:34It just didn't, rather like this season, it won't fall for George, will it?
00:48:39Yeah, interesting, the red flag didn't help Kimi Antonelli either.
00:48:43He went from the hards to the mediums,
00:48:45but then the virtual safety car came back at the right moment.
00:48:49Yes, you're right on tyres,
00:48:51but what the red flag did do was put Kimi and P12 on the grid,
00:48:55and with no field spread of the first four laps,
00:48:57he was right back in the, you know, within a few seconds of the leaders.
00:49:03Very much so.
00:49:04Family celebrations down in Park Fermat.
00:49:08Anyway, this, you remember his first visit to Italy
00:49:12as a Formula 1 driver at Imola
00:49:14and all the disappointment of that particular race last season.
00:49:19He then came here to Monza last year,
00:49:22qualified sixth and finished ninth.
00:49:25And, well, he's put that day and the day at Imola
00:49:30very much to the back of his mind to come and win this.
00:49:33The first one to finish for Mercedes
00:49:36is the opening Grand Prix of the year as well.
00:49:39A seventh career win for Kimi Antonelli,
00:49:43and I'm sure there will be many, many more to come,
00:49:45not in his career, but this season as well.
00:49:49Well, the talk, you know, in recent races, who's the challenger?
00:49:53George Russell and Lewis Hamilton tied on points
00:49:55going into this race behind him in second.
00:49:57Lando Norris with the momentum of back-to-back Grand Prix wins.
00:50:00The engine penalty he had to take
00:50:02that can all be forgotten for the moment
00:50:05because he's put up with that, Martin,
00:50:07and gone on to win the Grand Prix.
00:50:09And we think George has got an engine penalty to take in Baku,
00:50:12don't we, so maybe he can undo that damage as well.
00:50:17But it's been a very difficult day for George Russell,
00:50:20and he will have to, surely, sit down and talk to the team
00:50:25and go, how did that happen?
00:50:27I was leading the race.
00:50:30Why was I not given the preferential cheap pit stop there?
00:50:34Yeah.
00:50:35I mean, the team might say, look, medium tyres for Kimi.
00:50:39We had to stop him again.
00:50:42That was the right time to do it.
00:50:44But George will say, yeah, but hang on a minute.
00:50:46I was still leading this race.
00:50:48It'll be an interesting debrief.
00:50:52Being the sort of person George is,
00:50:54he'll absolutely be delighted that Kimi has won his home Grand Prix for him,
00:50:58you know, as a team mate and human being.
00:51:01But for the World Championship,
00:51:03this was George Russell's opportunity to really inflict or do something about the deficit.
00:51:10A huge opportunity.
00:51:12And the deficit has grown.
00:51:15He turns disadvantage into advantage.
00:51:21And in the championship,
00:51:22that championship fight is very much advantage.
00:51:27Kimi Antonelli.
00:51:31Part of me wants to burst into song at this moment in time.
00:51:35He's a super kid as well.
00:51:37He's just a lovely kid to just stand and talk to about things.
00:51:42Interestingly, George not going over to have a chat.
00:51:45I've not seen him go over to necessarily have a chat at the moment.
00:51:54I would imagine that's an Italian flag is going up to the podium with him.
00:52:00Yeah.
00:52:01Done it for Italy.
00:52:03Sixty years they have waited for a home win in the home Grand Prix for a driver.
00:52:12The silence is quite deafening, isn't it?
00:52:19Well, we're not going to have silence for very much longer.
00:52:24There's certainly no silence on the track
00:52:25as the crowd are allowed to stream on to the start-finish straight
00:52:29to celebrate under the podium.
00:52:31But before we get there,
00:52:33David Coulthard has a microphone in his hand
00:52:36and he is waiting to talk to the top three.
00:52:38We'll hear from them in a few moments' time.
00:52:41George was there, Kimi's there.
00:52:43I think we're waiting for Max, to be honest.
00:52:46It's been a hot, hot afternoon here at Monza.
00:52:50It's 32 degrees and we're past five o'clock.
00:52:54Max is going to make his way to David Coulthard.
00:52:58He's got the winner in front of him.
00:53:03Kimi, I'm not known for my Italian,
00:53:05but grandissimo, that was unbelievable.
00:53:08Did you ever imagine you could go from 19
00:53:12to being the first Italian
00:53:14since even before I was born to win this Grand Prix?
00:53:17I did not expect.
00:53:18And grazie a tutti per essere venuti.
00:53:21Grazie per il supporto.
00:53:22And yeah, unbelievable.
00:53:25Unbelievable.
00:53:26I'm so happy.
00:53:27And I could have never imagined to be here today,
00:53:30but you know, we managed to pull it off
00:53:33and I'm really, really happy.
00:53:35There's so much to unpack in this race.
00:53:37I have to thank you all for what was a brilliant race.
00:53:41It was happening right up until the last few laps.
00:53:45It looked like you got out onto the gravel,
00:53:46that first chicane breaking up a little bit,
00:53:49and then you had to come back again
00:53:50and get the pass done one more time.
00:53:53Yeah, I mean, it was quite scary during the moment
00:53:56because the thermal was breaking up,
00:53:58but I still thought I could do the corner.
00:54:02But, you know, once I went over a bit of gravel as well,
00:54:05I went straight and I was like, you know,
00:54:08maybe I lost my chance,
00:54:10but then luckily we still had the pace
00:54:12and managed to bring it home.
00:54:14We can see with the color of your face,
00:54:16we can see with the sweat
00:54:17just how hard you were working there behind the cockpit.
00:54:20At any point, were you thinking,
00:54:23points are points, that's good on this weekend,
00:54:25or was it just always, I want to win my home Grand Prix?
00:54:30Yeah, I mean, after the second restart,
00:54:32I was up there and I knew I could have had a shot for the win.
00:54:35So, yeah, definitely I believed in it,
00:54:40especially when I was behind George.
00:54:42But it was really difficult
00:54:44because really difficult to break away
00:54:46with the toe being so strong.
00:54:49But, yeah, at the end, you know,
00:54:50we pitted and he stayed out
00:54:52and he struggled a bit with his tires at the end.
00:54:55Well, you know, with pressure tires,
00:54:56I was able to increase the pace
00:54:59and, yeah, managed to win it.
00:55:01Okay, Kimi, thank you for now.
00:55:03Stay there with us.
00:55:04And, George, I don't really know what to say.
00:55:08On a day where you aced the starts,
00:55:11you kept it clean,
00:55:12it seemed that you were doing everything necessary
00:55:14to bring home the victory.
00:55:15And in the end, you look in your mirrors
00:55:17and you see this man right there
00:55:20and you have to battle him in second place.
00:55:23Not the result you wanted.
00:55:24Yeah, I mean, huge congrats to Kimi, of course.
00:55:27Incredible result from him
00:55:29when I looked on the leaderboard at the beginning.
00:55:32I saw he was already in sort of P5, P4.
00:55:35I knew straight away he was going to be in the mix.
00:55:38So, yeah, huge congrats to him.
00:55:40It was looking like a pretty strong race from us.
00:55:43And then I was just struggling with the tires towards the end.
00:55:45Obviously, we did the whole race on that one hard tire.
00:55:48So, yeah, I'll take it.
00:55:51It's been more positive than it was pre-summer break.
00:55:55And that's what I needed to try and achieve.
00:55:57But, of course, I would have loved to be in P1 today.
00:56:00You mentioned the tires.
00:56:01Of course, you didn't take that virtual safety car stop
00:56:04that both Kimi and Max did.
00:56:06Was that a discussion or it all happened so late
00:56:08that it was just a case of you had no choice?
00:56:10To be honest, I thought we were both going to stay out.
00:56:13I was surprised to see him pit in.
00:56:15I think in the end, it was a roll of the dice both ways.
00:56:19You know, in the moment,
00:56:20the team wouldn't have known which strategy was better.
00:56:23Made sense to split the cars.
00:56:26But in the end, you know, Kimi had great pace.
00:56:30And, yeah, there we are.
00:56:32Well done with the second place.
00:56:34And, Max, well, some great racing.
00:56:37You seem to favor that outside line into the second chicane,
00:56:40which worked well for you.
00:56:42We heard you on the radio saying the reoccurrence
00:56:44of some rear issues on the car.
00:56:46But you've got to be happy with that third place,
00:56:48all things considered.
00:56:50Yeah, it was, you know, there were some good battles out there.
00:56:52I had to send them many times around the outside
00:56:54because we were just struggling a lot with deployment
00:56:56from turn two to four compared to our competitors.
00:56:59And, in general, I think top speed wasn't our friend today.
00:57:02So, yeah, just trying to hang in there.
00:57:05But they were a bit too fast.
00:57:07That's why I was just trying to be in that overtake mode.
00:57:10But at one point, I lost that and tried to just do my own race.
00:57:14But I had one tricky moment in turn two
00:57:17because the tarmac was opening up.
00:57:19So I almost just went off
00:57:21because I picked up, like, the gravel from the tarmac.
00:57:24And then I had the McLarens of my overtake mode.
00:57:27And, yeah, it makes quite a big difference right here.
00:57:30And, yeah, once I cleared them,
00:57:33yeah, happy with P3 and to be on the podium here.
00:57:36OK, congratulations on the podium.
00:57:38And, Kimi, finally back to you.
00:57:40Have you heard of a rapper called LL Cool J?
00:57:43No.
00:57:44Well, he's got a song called Something Like a Phenomenon.
00:57:47You are having a phenomenal season.
00:57:50Your seventh victory in Formula One.
00:57:52Once again, your emotions here winning the Italian Grand Prix.
00:57:56Yeah, it's a dream coming through.
00:57:59And what an incredible day.
00:58:02And I couldn't do it without my team, my family,
00:58:04and everyone who supports me.
00:58:06And, yeah, still a few races to go.
00:58:09So we've got to keep our head down.
00:58:12But, yeah, now we're going to enjoy it today.
00:58:15OK.
00:58:15Thank you very much.
00:58:16Grazie.
00:58:17Enjoy the podium.
00:58:46He will enjoy the podium, the evening.
00:58:48Legendary podium is going to...
00:58:50You will not be able to see an ounce of racetrack, will you,
00:58:53for fans at any moment now?
00:58:55There's barely any room on the start-finish straight.
00:58:58Yes, the crowd is still streaming towards that podium.
00:59:03Grazie.
00:59:05As he signs the champagne bottle for Kimi Antonelli.
00:59:10Very diplomatic, I thought, from George Russell.
00:59:13The question of the strategy and saying,
00:59:16I didn't expect Kimi to be pitting.
00:59:19I was surprised when he did.
00:59:20Yeah, George is playing the team game there.
00:59:23And respect for that.
00:59:25But, yeah, as soon as they had the cheap pit stop
00:59:29under that virtual safety car and got out
00:59:32while it was still virtual safety car,
00:59:34went green, didn't it, as they were heading down
00:59:36to the first corner, which is the perfect stop
00:59:38in those situations for Antonelli and Verstappen.
00:59:42And he was clearly going to have a...
00:59:46We'll listen to this.
00:59:56Were you already out of the pitch when VSC ended?
00:59:59We just got out of the pitch.
01:00:01We were still in the pitch exit, but...
01:00:04Well, break into the one, let's keep clear.
01:00:07So, I was...
01:00:09Terez came out of the pitch in front of me.
01:00:11And it was plus four seconds of the pitch.
01:00:13With the VSC.
01:00:16I don't know if he had a boost issue or something, but...
01:00:19I had that in Austria.
01:00:20Yeah?
01:00:21It's quite like...
01:00:21Yeah, because, you know, they only did...
01:00:23Like, on a different...
01:00:25It's like you leave a little bit of a gap already.
01:00:28And then someone is in front of you,
01:00:29and you're completely stuck.
01:00:30Yeah.
01:00:31Yeah.
01:00:42And in the beginning, I saw you guys fighting.
01:00:44I was like, a little bit more, a little bit more,
01:00:45so I could get back into the overtake.
01:00:50And this was big.
01:00:51It was weird, no?
01:00:53At my leg.
01:00:54At my line.
01:00:54He was, I think, very early.
01:00:56Yeah.
01:00:56It's not a bit, yeah.
01:00:57Big smell.
01:01:01But in the beginning, our deployment was so different.
01:01:07Yeah, it was so different, the deployment.
01:01:11What strat were you in?
01:01:14Seven and...
01:01:15Seven and four.
01:01:17Ah, okay.
01:01:18Were you in eight?
01:01:19Yes.
01:01:20Yeah, that's fine.
01:01:28Oh, yeah.
01:01:31Mm.
01:01:34Yeah, so I had that as well.
01:01:37I didn't go off, but it's crazy,
01:01:39the gravel from the tarmac.
01:01:40Yeah.
01:01:50So the tarmac was breaking up?
01:01:51Yeah, exactly, yeah.
01:01:53It was quite bad.
01:01:55Where were you at?
01:01:57The start, the second restart?
01:02:0012.
01:02:01But you were very quick.
01:02:02You got, it seemed like you got up, like, super quick.
01:02:05Yeah, yeah, no, no, it was, uh...
01:02:07A few laps?
01:02:08But in the turn one, I got, like, four places at the second start.
01:02:17The last one in the back was...
01:02:19I thought we were going to crash massively under the bridge into a scar.
01:02:28Yeah, I thought we were going to crash.
01:02:29We'll leave the cool-down room there.
01:02:32George Russell asking a lot of questions as to what strat modes Kimi Antonetti was in.
01:02:37I was in four and seven.
01:02:38What were you in?
01:02:39I was in strat eight.
01:02:40Is that more power, strat eight?
01:02:43Logically, you would say so, wouldn't you?
01:02:45But, yeah, I'm sure it's not quite as simple as that
01:02:49in terms of how you use the power unit,
01:02:52how you use all your energy.
01:02:54But, yeah, so George did 50 laps on his tyres,
01:02:58as you pointed out, left Antonelli doing 25
01:03:01on the medium compound tyres half the distance
01:03:04and just gave him so much more grip and speed.
01:03:07Of course, he had the new power unit in the back of his Mercedes,
01:03:10so it's fresh out of the box, going to give you a bit more.
01:03:14Maybe you can then run it at a higher strat as a result of that.
01:03:19The only consolation for George is that we'll put him
01:03:22actually clear second in the championship now, won't it?
01:03:25Ten points to Lewis.
01:03:28Lando Norris, fourth place and 171 points.
01:03:33Kimi Antonelli with a 66-point lead.
01:03:3866, the year.
01:03:40That's an Italian last one, the Italian Grand Prix.
01:03:44Max Verstappen has won the Italian Grand Prix
01:03:47in the intervening years.
01:03:50Three wins here.
01:03:52And another podium for him, for George Russell.
01:03:58Booze for George Russell from the Tifosi,
01:04:02his second Italian Grand Prix podium.
01:04:04And, well, listen to the cheers as our winner makes his way out now
01:04:09into the sunshine.
01:04:19I tell you, it's proper deafening here at the track.
01:04:24Kimi Antonelli stands on top of the podium at Monza in Formula One for the first time.
