00:00:23baseball from the Lone Star State Sunday baseball on the show it's the Tampa Bay Rays and the Texas
00:00:33Rangers all right we'll be back to get this one started after this and today's starter AJ Smith
00:00:45Schauber and singy it's unique these days but he's more of a pitch-to-contact type of guy yeah
00:00:51Boogie doesn't rely too heavily on the strikeout he knows he needs to miss barrels get some soft
00:00:57contact let the defense do work behind him and I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo
00:01:02don't
00:01:03give hitters time to adjust or think they could move through a ball game and you look off at the
00:01:07line for quality start we'll see what he's got in this one Chandler Simpson the leadoff batter as he
00:01:13looks at ball one at 96 that pitches in for a strike
00:01:48base stock center field so a man on base to start the inning he made that look easy keeping his
00:01:54bat
00:01:55in the zone on playing for a long time that leads to a high contact rate and more barrels food
00:02:01even
00:02:01when you don't get it great it still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of
00:02:06the
00:02:20center field run around the goal strike in there throws save that's a stolen base that's 50 stolen
00:02:30bases for him this year well he's batting leadoff and he's acting like a traditional leadoff hitter
00:02:35gets on base to start the game then puts himself on second with a nice stolen bag I think that
00:02:40sets
00:02:40the tone for the offense for sure man it's second got it looking that's a strikeout now a look at
00:02:52Kevin Cash's lineup for the Tampa Bay Rays needless to say this is an aggressive lineup they've drawn
00:02:59fewer walks than any other team in the league well Boog as I pop my collar this lineup is taking
00:03:05the Chris
00:03:06Singleton approach but in today's game we know walks are key to scoring runs at times this lineup swings a
00:03:14little too freely they need to make pitchers work harder the one-on that's a strike across the top of
00:03:22the zone
00:03:30Smith shopper checks the runner Simpson back on a dive
00:03:39here's a one-one tap foul to play that fastball at the bottom of the zone can be very effective
00:03:47just got to keep it on the corners
00:03:54in the dirt
00:04:03comes a two-two upstairs
00:04:13strike three
00:04:15most guys are very aggressive when they see the stakes out there on the base paths and
00:04:21can't understand why he wasn't ready to swing the bat you've got to be ready to swing the bat in
00:04:25a
00:04:25situation like that with the go-ahead run in scoring position now here is Yandy Diaz
00:04:33Diaz went deep in his most recent game
00:04:41here's the pitch runner breaks for third swag on belted way back there it's got a chance and it is
00:04:49out of here
00:04:52he'll take a trot around the bases
00:04:56the Rays strike first
00:04:57it's two nothing
00:05:00you can't ask for a better start than hitting a home run in your first at bat to give your
00:05:04team the lead
00:05:06that pitch looked like the splitter but normally doesn't stay that high in the zone the bottom falls out at
00:05:12least to bring it around
00:05:13belt level but that one just stayed up and with that kind of velocity it's going to get hit really
00:05:18hard as it did right there
00:05:25walk-off homers aren't just about the win you get in that game as a player it's about the confidence
00:05:31the manager is going to have in you in big spots
00:05:34you can bet he's someone they'll look to in the future
00:05:45chewed out nobody on
00:05:49oh
00:05:50good one
00:06:03he goes down
00:06:03looking
00:06:07the Rays with a two-run homer it's now a two nothing ball game
00:06:12I'm gonna run you wild you can't stop me
00:06:17listen the way that I walk
00:06:19all in the way that I talk
00:06:21we go to the bottom of the first
00:06:23and today's starter Ryan Pepio
00:06:26singing he was impressive his last time out
00:06:28Josh Smith stepping in for the Rangers
00:06:31the second baseman
00:06:33number eight
00:06:34Josh
00:06:36Smith
00:06:38oh
00:06:48this one in the air center field
00:06:50Mullins under it
00:06:52one up one down
00:06:55and now we take a look at the Rangers lineup
00:06:58and something they've talked about needing to improve on moving forward is their ability to apply consistent pressure Chris right
00:07:05now it's not a club that gets on base enough you know
00:07:08sometimes Boog you need someone to grind out an 11 or 12 pitch at bat just to energize the team
00:07:14that can lead to getting runners on collecting a few big hits and scoring more runs
00:07:33in the air to left center
00:07:35Simpson settles underneath it
00:07:37takes it in for the out
00:07:45batting
00:07:46batting third
00:07:46no left fielder
00:07:47Alejandro Ozuna stepping in for the Rangers singing he's never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire
00:07:55career inside and that is ball one
00:08:04miss
00:08:15that's a really good take right there slider down and in very difficult to get on the same plane and
00:08:21do anything with
00:08:24and he walked him on four pitches maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there
00:08:29pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass
00:08:36this is again five in a row
00:08:42ozuna leads off first with two down to the inning to account you really don't want to give in here
00:08:48you got to work the edges really execute a pitch hopefully you can get back into this count and
00:08:54another ball right through there for a strike
00:09:16great rbi spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so
00:09:21something in the gap should definitely score it
00:09:27so what puts runners at first and second two walks in the first has to be some cause for concern
00:09:33i
00:09:33mean you're talking about a guy you want to pitch deep into the ball game it's not going to help
00:09:37with the pitch count right there they can't afford to hand out free bases at this rate
00:09:41young in the box here and fouls it off for strike one
00:09:51on the ground right side and that is that
00:09:57rangers leave a pair they trail it here to nothing
00:10:10we move ahead to the top of the second now and stepping in for the raise cedric mullins
00:10:33high fly ball down the left field line
00:10:37and a foul ball
00:10:48swing and a miss struck him out and that's four strikeouts well executed pitch on the outside part
00:11:03of the plate
00:11:17there's a strike move rusty valentine umpiring behind the plate in this one he has what you might call a
00:11:24tall strike zone both at the letters and down below the knees yeah and i'm sure that helps a lot
00:11:30of
00:11:30pitchers we see today who like to work up down trying to change eye levels and swing paths yep exactly
00:11:44fouls it back with two strikes
00:11:57that one 95 to finish him off no just couldn't pull the trigger on the fastball right there and i
00:12:03don't
00:12:03think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything i just think he was flat
00:12:08out frozen
00:12:08did not expect that location in my opinion now it's going to be nick fortez and that's a base hit
00:12:16so a two out knock keeps the inning alive batting not the truck stop carson
00:12:29oh he doesn't get the call ball one williams playing up the middle it's short hitting ninth in today's
00:12:36lineup and he's been on a good run at the plate hitting over 300 in his last 10 games
00:12:44hitting the air out to center field carter on the move pulls it down and he makes the catch
00:12:52one hit one left we go to the bottom of inning number two it's the rays two and the rangers
00:12:59nothing
00:13:01back at globe light field bottom of the second evan carter stepping in for the rangers
00:13:17that one finds the zone one ball one strike
00:13:25and a swing and a miss see if he can go upstairs a little bit make sure you miss
00:13:29up and out of the zone since you're heading to count one two don't miss in the zone because
00:13:34that's where you get hurt tosses to first leadoff man retired here in the second
00:13:41batting seven the catcher kyle higashioka
00:13:51chop to third
00:13:55fires across the diamond already two out here in the home half of inning number two
00:14:04two outs space is empty and here's the first baseman justin foscue three hits of the loss last night
00:14:14strike right there for him he's gonna have to do that consistently if he's gonna give any link to his
00:14:19skipper and that one is lifted in the air that is the inning
00:14:29nothing across here this half we played two full
00:14:32it's the rays two and the rangers nothing
00:14:39welcome back let's take a look at how the series has played out so far
00:15:04fastball for a strike at 95
00:15:14oh and two now
00:15:18up the middle makes the sliding stop throw to first but he beats it out and the leadoff man is
00:15:26on with
00:15:26an infield single that's why you run hard 90 feet take nothing for granted especially
00:15:31especially when you've got great speed i'll take the infield knock
00:15:55that one
00:15:58hammered but pulled foul
00:16:12liner stanked at first applies the tag and they get to double play
00:16:22junior camonero digs in down
00:16:32first pitch way inside a fastball well you've got to establish the inside part
00:16:38of the plate early and that sends a message not just to this hitter but to
00:16:42the rest of the lineup as well
00:16:45that one fouled off
00:16:54two down nobody on
00:16:58that's in there and it's one and two
00:17:09whoa
00:17:26now one missed
00:17:36swing at a high fly ball right field hellman on his way over and that is that
00:17:44nothing doing for tampa as they're unable to add to their two nothing lead
00:17:51back in arlington ready to go for the last half of the inning michael hellman
00:17:56stepping in for the rangers
00:18:00swing and a ground ball up the middle can't club it cleanly around first and hustling for
00:18:06second the throw in in there that's a double he quickly went from hitter to base runner
00:18:13love when the guys make that transition and he's got speed to put on a show
00:18:19and then he's got speed to do that and then he's got speed to put on a ball
00:18:26sliced hard but fouled down the left side
00:18:33And it's second
00:18:35No, that's a ball
00:18:42Check swing called strike
00:18:43And the count is one and two
00:18:50Line drive
00:18:51And it stays fair
00:18:53Brown's third headed for the plate
00:18:55He'll score
00:18:56It's an RBI single
00:18:58And now they trail by one
00:19:00Well, back within one as he brings home the run
00:19:03Nice line drive to the post side right there
00:19:06But he didn't spin off of it
00:19:07That's the key
00:19:08You still have to extend through the baseball
00:19:10In order to hit a line drive like that
00:19:12Here's seeds to the plate now
00:19:14Fly to left his first time
00:19:18Check swing and he went
00:19:19It's 0-1
00:19:22One on, nobody out
00:19:24A run in here in the last half of the third
00:19:26And that's in for a strike
00:19:28And the count is 0-2
00:19:31Keeps the at-bat going with a foul ball
00:19:33Just missed
00:19:34If he's able to connect on that
00:19:36Look out
00:19:39So now it's all about protect mode
00:19:41Try to shorten up
00:19:42Try to track the ball
00:19:44Block it if you have to
00:19:45As far as just a late swing
00:19:47That maybe you're not sure about
00:19:48But some way
00:19:49Somehow
00:19:50Climb back into this at-bat
00:19:52Through the count
00:19:57Smith
00:19:57Aboard here at first
00:19:58With nobody out
00:20:01Battling here as he fouls it away
00:20:02Five foul balls in a row
00:20:05I have no idea what that feels like
00:20:07But you gotta love this battle
00:20:08Just wondering
00:20:09Who's gonna blink first
00:20:11In the air to left center
00:20:13Simpson
00:20:14Moving under this one
00:20:15Makes the grab
00:20:21Up next for the Rangers
00:20:23No left fielder
00:20:25No left fielder
00:20:25Alejandro
00:20:28McJuda
00:20:34This one rift
00:20:35But foul to the right
00:20:42Here's your one
00:20:44Out to short
00:20:45Williams
00:20:46And he beats it
00:20:48He's safe
00:20:50Up next for the Rangers
00:20:52The designated hitter
00:20:54Jake
00:20:56Berger
00:20:57First and second
00:20:59One out
00:21:00Jake Berger
00:21:01Will hit next
00:21:02Now there's a bullet
00:21:03Down the line
00:21:04And that's a fair ball
00:21:07One runs in
00:21:08Here comes the runner
00:21:10Relay throw home
00:21:11And he's safe
00:21:12With the plate
00:21:13As they take the lead
00:21:143-2
00:21:15He stayed close
00:21:16With the front side
00:21:17Even though he likes to go
00:21:18To the opposite field
00:21:19If you go inside
00:21:20Too many times
00:21:21He'll make you pay
00:21:31That one found hard
00:21:32The other way
00:21:41One out
00:21:42The runner at second
00:21:43Here in the finale
00:21:44Of this 14th set
00:21:46At the ball
00:21:54Comes up empty
00:21:55That's strike two
00:22:04Swing and he popped it up
00:22:06Arunda
00:22:07Settles under
00:22:08And there's two down
00:22:15Up next for the Rangers
00:22:17The center fielder
00:22:19Number 32
00:22:20So next to hit for Texas
00:22:21Evan Carter
00:22:22Carter
00:22:24Foul ball there
00:22:34Strike two
00:22:35No he's really working
00:22:36That inside corner
00:22:37With the cutter
00:22:37I'll tell you what
00:22:38I hated that pitch
00:22:39So tough to get the barrel
00:22:40To and to keep it fair
00:22:42Mullins
00:22:43In position
00:22:44And that'll do it
00:22:48But three score
00:22:49In the inning
00:22:50Two of them
00:22:51On this two run double
00:22:52It's now a 3-2 ball game
00:22:58Back here at the ballpark
00:23:00Let's check out
00:23:00The latest news
00:23:01From around the league
00:23:13Well these rays
00:23:15Just lacking discipline
00:23:16At the plate
00:23:16In this ball game
00:23:17So many of their outs
00:23:18Have come from weak contact
00:23:19On pitches
00:23:20They're chasing
00:23:21Outside of the strike zone
00:23:22You can't do much
00:23:23Of anything
00:23:24With those locations
00:23:25And that's been true
00:23:26Again today
00:23:27Knee high
00:23:28That's in for a strike
00:23:29And as a pitcher
00:23:30When the hitters
00:23:30Are swinging at everything
00:23:31You feel no need
00:23:33To challenge inside the zone
00:23:34You just keep working
00:23:35The corners
00:23:36And expanding that strike zone
00:23:38And beyond
00:23:38They just keep eating
00:23:40Right out of your hand
00:23:41Carter
00:23:41Drops steps
00:23:42Heads back on it
00:23:43One away
00:23:51Up next for Tampa Bay
00:23:52The right fielder
00:23:53Victor
00:24:15That one finds the zone
00:24:17And it's on two
00:24:26Stays alive
00:24:34The 0-2
00:24:38Breaking ball
00:24:39And that got
00:24:40Up next for Tampa Bay
00:24:43The center fielder
00:24:44One gone runner
00:24:45At first
00:24:45Cedric Mullins
00:24:47Next to hit for the raise
00:24:49He's over one
00:25:02Now quick throw to first
00:25:04Mesa
00:25:04Dives back in safely
00:25:11The 0-1
00:25:14Swing and a foul back
00:25:15That's out of play
00:25:16Pretty good pitch
00:25:17There to take a rip at
00:25:18He wants to get his arms extended
00:25:20He likes the ball
00:25:20Away from him a little bit
00:25:22Just not able to square it up
00:25:33Swings through it
00:25:34And that's a strikeout
00:25:35It becomes pretty difficult
00:25:37As a teammate
00:25:37When a guy's struggling like this
00:25:39You don't know
00:25:39If you want to go up
00:25:40And tell him to keep swinging it
00:25:41Or if you want to give him his space
00:25:43What exactly he needs
00:25:44But right now
00:25:45It's clearly a struggle for him
00:25:47And you're just hoping that
00:25:48Somehow some way
00:25:49It'll click
00:25:50And he can get out of this
00:25:51As quickly as possible
00:25:52Checks over to first
00:25:53Back safely
00:26:02In the air
00:26:03Left side
00:26:04Ozuna
00:26:04Under it
00:26:06And that'll do it
00:26:10On now to the bottom of the fourth
00:26:12It's the Rangers 3
00:26:14The Rays 2
00:26:15This is Rays Baseball
00:26:17On the show
00:26:19Back at Globe Life Field
00:26:21Bottom 4
00:26:21Kyle Higashioka
00:26:23Stepping in for the Rangers
00:26:27Turned on
00:26:28But foul
00:26:29Wide of third
00:26:30Well these Rangers
00:26:31Doing a good job
00:26:32Of simply getting the bat
00:26:34On the ball
00:26:34In this game
00:26:35And the numbers
00:26:35Back that up
00:26:36And here's a stat for you
00:26:37Boog
00:26:38They're making contact
00:26:39With more than 85%
00:26:40Of the pitches
00:26:41That they're swinging at
00:26:42It's pretty special stuff
00:26:43Not so good
00:26:44If you're out there
00:26:45On the mound
00:26:45Caught him
00:26:46Looking for the K
00:26:47Definitely a borderline pitch
00:26:49Right there
00:26:50And he didn't look too convinced
00:26:51As he headed back
00:26:52To the dugout
00:26:52You know those are tough ones
00:26:54That let go
00:26:54As a hitter
00:26:55But with the human umpire
00:26:56Calling balls and strikes
00:26:58It's always going to be on you
00:26:59To protect yourself
00:27:00With two strikes
00:27:02Line drive
00:27:03He brings it down
00:27:05Nice play
00:27:07And here's a look
00:27:09At how he's using
00:27:10His pitches in this one
00:27:13Two down bases empty
00:27:15Next to hit
00:27:16Michael Hellman
00:27:21Swing and a miss
00:27:22And that's strike one
00:27:27On the ground
00:27:27Down to third
00:27:30Out with room to spare
00:27:32And that's the inning
00:27:34One two three
00:27:35Go the Rangers
00:27:36But they still lead
00:27:37At 3-2
00:27:41Welcome back
00:27:42And take a look
00:27:43At some hot hitting
00:27:44In this series
00:27:45As we check out
00:27:46The numbers
00:27:57Right through there
00:27:58For a strike
00:27:59Fortes
00:28:00In his fifth season
00:28:0129 years old
00:28:03And he was drafted
00:28:04In the fourth round
00:28:05Back in 2018
00:28:18Back in 2018
00:28:19Well that's kind of
00:28:20What you expect
00:28:21In an 0-2 count
00:28:22Excellent job
00:28:23Of the hitter
00:28:23To have to play
00:28:24Discipline
00:28:24To lay off
00:28:25Of that pitch
00:28:30He might have to
00:28:31Look for a different
00:28:32Put away pitch
00:28:32Right here
00:28:332-2
00:28:33He's already seen
00:28:34The curveball
00:28:35A couple of times
00:28:36In this at bat
00:28:36So might have it
00:28:37Timed up
00:28:38And ready for it
00:28:41Slice the other way
00:28:42That's a base hit
00:28:45Now he turns
00:28:46And heads for second
00:28:47The throw in
00:28:49And now the tying run
00:28:50Is in the scoring position
00:28:52Multi-hit game for him now
00:28:54And with the lack of results
00:28:56He's been having lately
00:28:57I'm sure he's feeling
00:28:58Some relief
00:28:58Now a pretty big at bat
00:28:59Coming up
00:29:00With a chance
00:29:00To even this ball game up
00:29:10In there
00:29:11First strike one
00:29:14Raised down by a run
00:29:15And we're at the top
00:29:16Of the fifth
00:29:22This one in the air
00:29:23Right field
00:29:24Way back there
00:29:26And that is foul
00:29:34And it's second
00:29:36Swing and a miss
00:29:38Stuck him out
00:29:39Not what you're looking for
00:29:41After the leadoff double
00:29:42A strikeout
00:29:43And there's one away
00:29:49Digging in
00:29:50It's the speedy outfielder
00:29:51Chandler Simpson
00:29:53He's two for two
00:30:09Nice grab
00:30:10Over to first
00:30:11It's there
00:30:12And that's a great play
00:30:14Fastball groove
00:30:14Right down the middle
00:30:15Usually a lot of damage
00:30:16Done with that pitch
00:30:17A hard grounder
00:30:18But he wanted to get
00:30:19That ball in the air
00:30:20Maybe drive it into the gap
00:30:32Nasty backdoor slider
00:30:33There's really nothing
00:30:34You can do with that
00:30:35If you swing at it
00:30:35So it's a good take
00:30:37By him
00:30:47Two outs
00:30:48With a runner
00:30:48A third
00:30:56Base hit in the center field
00:30:58In to score from third
00:31:00It's an RBI single
00:31:02A big two out hit
00:31:04And the game is tied
00:31:05Well there you go
00:31:06The RBI machine
00:31:08Another clutch run scoring
00:31:10At back
00:31:11Yeah he's been so good
00:31:13In these situations
00:31:14Call it clutch if you want
00:31:16But his resume speaks for itself
00:31:17And the Rangers manager
00:31:19Making his way towards the mound
00:31:21Now as he will make the move
00:31:22A.J. Smith-Shauver
00:31:24Is done
00:31:25Just never found his groove
00:31:27Wasn't able to settle in
00:31:28New arm coming on
00:31:30Back in a moment
00:31:31Now pitching
00:31:31Jose Corniel
00:31:33Not a pitch out of the pen here
00:31:35Well they didn't get much length
00:31:36Out of their starter in this one
00:31:38So they've got a lot of outs
00:31:39To eat up in that bullpen
00:31:40I think they'll look for some length
00:31:42Out of him right here
00:31:43If they can get it
00:31:44Go ahead run on base
00:31:46Junior Caminero
00:31:47Next to hit for the Rays
00:32:01Check swing and he went
00:32:02That is strike two
00:32:12That's foul off to the right side
00:32:14Keeps the A.B. going
00:32:25That one lifted to left
00:32:27Ozuna has a bead on it
00:32:29And that is that
00:32:33But the RBI single
00:32:34Pushes across a run
00:32:36We're tied now
00:32:37With three apiece
00:32:38You're watching
00:32:39Tampa Bay Rays baseball
00:32:40On the show
00:32:41Florida
00:32:43Back in Arlington
00:32:45We head to the bottom
00:32:46Of the fifth
00:32:46Josh Smith
00:32:48Stepping in for the Rangers
00:32:50No, that's a ball
00:32:57Sold it really well
00:32:58With the arm speed
00:33:00Swung underneath it
00:33:01So change up
00:33:02That stayed a little bit
00:33:03More on playing
00:33:04Than what he was anticipating
00:33:08On the ground to the left
00:33:10And that's just
00:33:11The one two
00:33:17Got him swinging for the strikeout
00:33:19Went back to the slider
00:33:20And it was a good idea
00:33:22Just a great slider right there
00:33:24And I think the key for pitchers
00:33:26And what hitters don't want to see
00:33:27Is if a pitcher misses with that pitch
00:33:30That he misses off the edge
00:33:32Of the strike zone
00:33:33Rather than in the middle
00:33:34Of the strike zone
00:33:35And right there
00:33:36Excellent execution
00:33:38And it finished up
00:33:39In a perfect spot
00:33:40That's the ball
00:33:42All tied up
00:33:43Last half of inning
00:33:44Number five
00:33:58To the right side
00:34:00Done
00:34:02Slings to first
00:34:04All that for the fifth inning
00:34:05Moving along
00:34:06Two quick outs
00:34:07For the Rangers
00:34:08No left fielder
00:34:09All right
00:34:10Now at the plate
00:34:11Alejandro Ozuna
00:34:17And that's in there
00:34:18At the knees
00:34:19For a strike
00:34:23This one in the air
00:34:25Center field
00:34:26Mullins
00:34:27Under it
00:34:28And that will end the inning
00:34:30Rangers go down
00:34:31Quickly there
00:34:32Score remains tied
00:34:33At three
00:34:40Back at globe light field
00:34:41Close game here
00:34:43And a chance now
00:34:44To look at a few highlights
00:34:45From this one
00:34:46Why do you stop crying to me
00:34:51You say I fall to blame
00:34:57But don't you come in
00:35:01Take your name
00:35:09Stepping in
00:35:11Yandy Diaz
00:35:31Outside with a breaking ball
00:35:33Bullpen action for the Rangers
00:35:35Cole win
00:35:36The young right hander
00:35:37Up and throwing
00:35:43Hit in the air center field
00:35:46Carter under this one
00:35:48And there's one away
00:35:54Up next to Tampa Bay
00:35:56The white fielder
00:35:57Victor
00:36:17This ball's chopped on the ground
00:36:19Whips it to first on the run
00:36:20Nicely done for the hour
00:36:23Up next to Tampa Bay the center
00:36:25Fueled Cedric Mullins
00:36:28Cedric Mullins
00:36:29Cedric Mullins
00:36:29The next to hit
00:36:30Who's over two
00:36:31With a pair of strikeouts
00:36:48This one smoked on its way
00:36:51Out of here
00:36:57Cedric Mullins sends it out
00:36:59His 21st of the year
00:37:01And that's how they take the lead
00:37:03It's 4-3
00:37:06Maybe he's starting to break out of this mini slump
00:37:08That's the type of swing that makes you think
00:37:10Good things are coming his way
00:37:11Good things are coming to you
00:37:21No
00:37:23We'll be right back
00:37:25You know
00:37:40We're not all
00:37:46corneal maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run chris
00:37:51yeah it seems that way you know guys they can come out feel good but then all of a sudden
00:37:55get
00:37:55touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch they're not trusting their
00:38:07stuff hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning and the Rays get one on
00:38:13a solo shot
00:38:14it's now a 4-3 ball game it's Major League Baseball on the show
00:38:25back in Arlington bottom of the six Jake Berger stepping in for the Rangers
00:38:33fastball for a strike
00:38:40chopped out towards shore Williams to first and that's one out as they get the leadoff hitter in
00:38:47the six ranger the third baseman number six
00:39:11the Rays leading by a run here in the bottom of the six and a foul ball he stays alive
00:39:28keeps the it back going with a foul ball
00:39:34the o2 goes down looking well they get the strike out there and what kind of stood out to me
00:39:42was that
00:39:42they weren't shying away from contact every single pitch was in the strike zone and that tells me they
00:39:47they wanted to attack him and it paid off
00:39:53here's the center fielder Evan Carter
00:39:58and he grounds one back up the middle oh look at the stop in time got him and that'll do
00:40:04it
00:40:04nothing doing for the Rangers still down a run it's 4-3
00:40:13we go to the top of the seventh and now the catcher for the Rays Nick Fortes
00:40:25that one finds the zone that strike one
00:40:38right through there for a strike well I didn't like those first two pitches down and oh two hole he's
00:40:43going to have to battle hope he gets a mistake this one in the air center field Carter under it
00:40:53one down
00:40:59the batter number seven shortstop Carson
00:41:35this one in the air Smith and a couple of quick outs
00:41:46back to the top of the order so next to the plate for Tampa Bay Chandler Simpson
00:41:58close but called a ball and that's ball one challenge from behind the dish here
00:42:04it just shaved the zone so they still got both their challenges
00:42:13two down nobody on and that one fouled off
00:42:35that's out number three down in order go the Rays and it remains a 4-3 game
00:42:47back now pitching for the Stephen Matz taking over on the mound he's pitching on two days rest
00:43:01this one in the air right field
00:43:03should be extra bases
00:43:06around first heading for two
00:43:09as the tying run is forced to stop at second
00:43:12well that was an important bat in this game so great job they're stepping up to the challenge
00:43:17now we'll see if they can pick up that tie and run and start us over here in the late
00:43:21innings
00:43:36ground ball left side and it's just foul that was close
00:43:46so the tying run is second swing and a miss and that strike two gosh a little late on that
00:43:52breaking ball I don't think you recognize it out of the hand just a little tardy
00:43:55we have to regroup here knocks that one away and we'll do it again
00:44:06hard ground ball for Bidestock
00:44:12the road comes back in the tying run stops at third with nobody out
00:44:17long how he let that ball travel trusted his hands nice job
00:44:26so runners of the corners nobody out
00:44:29Michael Hellman getting ready to hit there's a strike
00:44:32in the infield at the corners don't be surprised to see them come home first
00:44:37and prevent that run from scoring
00:44:41I think ultimately you want to tie him off get the ball in on the plate so that he
00:44:46can't chop back up the middle
00:44:50throw pulls him off the bag at first everybody's save a base is loaded
00:44:55second baseman
00:44:55jump
00:44:58Smith
00:45:07a bunt and it's popped up brings it in
00:45:14the batter number five shortstop Corey Seager to the plate in this high leverage spot
00:45:23this one's blistered no doubt about it
00:45:26out of here grand slam
00:45:33Corey Seager goes deep
00:45:35home run number 30 on the year
00:45:37and they jump in front in the 7
00:45:40it's 7-4
00:45:42the brighter the lights the more he shines
00:45:45yeah this guy lives for big moments and right there made a statement big time
00:46:05just an unbelievable turn of events here I mean they've been putting together solid at bats all inning they set
00:46:11the table for him and he delivered big time to get him the lead huge momentum shift on that swing
00:46:17and now we'll see if they can hold on
00:46:26well at least he's got a clean slate after that grand slam nothing to think about on the basis so
00:46:31he can really go after the hitter and just approach this like it's a clean inning get the outs that
00:46:36you need to get back into the dugout
00:46:57gets a piece there we'll do it again
00:47:03gets a piece there we'll do it again
00:47:09going to go
00:47:10going to down
00:47:18four runs already in the frame here the bottom of the 7
00:47:25up the middle
00:47:26it's through for hill
00:47:27and that's a one-off single
00:47:32up next for the ranger
00:47:34the designated hitter
00:47:36now Jake Berger
00:47:39Berger
00:47:40Rudder takes off
00:47:43no question about this one
00:47:45it's out of here
00:47:50it's their second home run of the inning and they add to the lead it's 9-4
00:47:56that's a swing that'll boost the win probability for sure
00:48:06that's as big as it gets right there you take advantage of a mistake that is an ultimate here it
00:48:12is watch it I'm gonna jog around the bases
00:48:28just
00:48:29miss
00:48:38the lefty the one
00:48:40what a stop
00:48:45takes it himself and he got him nicely done at first for the out
00:48:49up next for the ranger
00:48:51the center fielder number 32
00:48:54Evan
00:48:54two outs bases empty
00:48:57now here is Evan Carter
00:48:590 for 3
00:49:000 for 3 in this one
00:49:03that clips the corner
00:49:05Carter
00:49:05thought that one missed and here comes a challenge
00:49:08good eye at the plate
00:49:10they'll overturn the call
00:49:11still two challenges left for them
00:49:30next offering in there for a strike that strike two
00:49:40gets a piece and stays alive
00:49:43gets a piece and stays alive
00:49:46but one two
00:49:50inside almost got him straightened him up a little bit
00:50:00in the air left field
00:50:03and it's just
00:50:11good job to fight that one on
00:50:14now he's desperately looking for that swing and miss he's gonna have to just change speeds a little bit
00:50:19try to move it around create just a little bit of illusion at the end
00:50:23brings it in for the third out
00:50:26but two round trippers in this inning the long ball was working
00:50:31it's opened up now
00:50:329-4
00:50:33major league baseball is on the show
00:50:42welcome back and a new arm of the mound to start the eight
00:50:45Luis Curvello
00:50:47he doesn't get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers
00:50:50so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him
00:50:55they'll have to be on their toes with him on the ball
00:51:02see the velocity 97 with that fastball
00:51:16tap dances out of the way of that one
00:51:18if you're on the mound right now
00:51:19you know you have to retire this hitter
00:51:21if he gets on base
00:51:22it could open up the floodgates for this offense to score some runs
00:51:27that one finds the zone
00:51:29and the count
00:51:30one and two
00:51:31action in the pen down there
00:51:33Kumar Rocker
00:51:34the right-handed sinker baller
00:51:36to be readying himself
00:51:48set down on
00:51:49that was pretty nasty
00:51:51probably frozen with a great fastball right on the corner
00:51:54it's kind of like bowling when you think the ball is going to get into the gutter
00:51:57and somehow it just hangs on to that edge and knocks down a pin
00:52:00well he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called third strike
00:52:06smash down the left field line
00:52:08that's a base hit
00:52:11so a man aboard now with one away
00:52:17man those are the types of hits where you don't feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever
00:52:21such a good feeling
00:52:23got a fastball middle of the plate jumped all over it
00:52:25absolutely smoked that ball
00:52:27and now here is
00:52:29Yandy Diaz
00:52:37here comes the 0-1
00:52:39just a slow ground ball this time
00:52:42Young
00:52:42toss the second
00:52:44double play
00:52:45what a quick killing day in the inner
00:52:47no runs
00:52:48one hit
00:52:49no errors
00:52:50and no one left
00:52:51home half of inning number eight straight ahead
00:52:53it's the Rangers nine
00:52:55the Rays four
00:52:56this is Rays baseball
00:52:58on the show
00:52:59Florida
00:53:04now picking for the
00:53:05back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth
00:53:09Cam Boozer
00:53:10and with the big deficit on the scoreboard
00:53:13he almost has to just put that out of his mind
00:53:15every outing matters for relievers in their numbers
00:53:18but I think it's tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one
00:53:23in a close game
00:53:23well these Rangers simply put are producing a lot of quality swings
00:53:28they have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far and that tells me they're seeing the ball
00:53:33out of the pitcher's hand really well
00:53:35Aranda steps on the back leadoff man is out here in the eighth
00:53:40and now the first baseman Justin Foscue
00:53:42one for three
00:53:48sliced hard but foul
00:53:50and on the mound they can't be feeling too comfortable either with the way these batters are hitting the baseball
00:53:55it makes it harder to come into the strike zone for fear of getting hit hard
00:54:04in the dirt ball to Chris you look at it
00:54:07these are the spots where guys
00:54:09can come on pitch well
00:54:12instill some confidence in the manager
00:54:15and all of a sudden they're pitching higher leverage spots of the postseason
00:54:19well in this final month I mean this is an audition period for the call ups
00:54:24but it's also for that marginal reliever that was on the roster throughout the season
00:54:30to maybe step up and be on that playoff roster
00:54:34ground ball could be two
00:54:36the turn by Williams at second
00:54:38over to first but he beats it
00:54:40the batter number eight
00:54:43second baseman
00:54:44Josh Smith
00:54:46so back to the top of the order
00:54:49next up for Texas Josh Smith
00:54:53and a base hit right there
00:54:55and out to a board
00:55:02the batter number five
00:55:04coming off an absolute bomb
00:55:06in his last at bat
00:55:07Seager
00:55:09oh
00:55:18I think that pitch surprised all of us
00:55:20right down the middle
00:55:21doesn't get a swing
00:55:22very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that
00:55:25he swings and fouls one off
00:55:29the one two
00:55:31and they'll do it again
00:55:37two on two outs
00:55:40that work back up the middle and it gets through
00:55:43helmet around third
00:55:45he will score
00:55:46it's an RBI single
00:55:48it's ten four
00:56:06and a ground ball to first
00:56:09he steps on the bag
00:56:10they limit the damage here
00:56:12two men left stranded but they do push across one
00:56:16ninth inning coming up
00:56:17the Rangers
00:56:18out front here
00:56:19ten four
00:56:20last chance for the Rays
00:56:21coming up
00:56:25we're back
00:56:26it's the top of the ninth
00:56:27and there's a new pitcher on the mound
00:56:29Kumar Rocker
00:56:30and he's had a struggle so far this year
00:56:32as you can see the inflated ERA
00:56:34looking to bring that down a little bit right here
00:56:37Victor Mesa Jr.
00:56:39now at the plate
00:56:40he's a junior
00:56:58the other way
00:56:59and he goes airborne to make the catch
00:57:02wow that was an awesome leaping catch
00:57:06great reactions
00:57:07great athleticism
00:57:09and he snatched that thing out of the air
00:57:11and he robbed him of a base hit
00:57:28just missed activity in the bullpen
00:57:31cold wind up and loosening in the pen
00:57:38one down base is empty here in the ninth
00:57:46up the middle and that one handled
00:57:48over to first
00:57:50out on a bang bang play but he made it close
00:57:58last chance for the Rays
00:58:00here's the second baseman
00:58:01Oliver Dunn
00:58:10no base hits in the series for him so far
00:58:12and it's clearly been a rough one
00:58:14you just hope he's not pressing too hard
00:58:15because that just compounds things
00:58:17it makes the slump even longer
00:58:19never seems to help
00:58:20never helped me
00:58:33rocker is just one strike away
00:58:37hit on the ground to short
00:58:39Seager
00:58:41throw to first
00:58:42air out time
00:58:43and this one is over
00:58:44the Rangers take the finale
00:58:46and earn a split of this four game series
00:58:49nice
00:58:50nice work out of the bullpen for that first
00:58:51end-all be window
00:58:52they turn to him when they didn't have the lead
00:58:55he kept things steady
00:58:56and he's rewarded with the W
