A quiet morning in a small woodland turns into a rewarding wildlife encounter as the search for a grey-headed woodpecker nest leads to chicks, feeding visits, and one unexpected final surprise. After finding the same tree from an earlier spring visit, the camera lingers on a nest hole where first one chick, then two, and possibly even a third or fourth tiny beak can be seen inside.

The walk continues through an overgrown forest floor thick with ferns, nettles, and mosquitoes, making the undergrowth hard to cross and forcing a retreat back to the path. Along the way there are brief stops for dragonflies, damselflies, and a tortoise hidden in the vegetation, before a small face peeking from a hole high in a tree provides the last moment of the day.

This is calm wildlife filming and bird photography in the woods, with natural forest ambience, nest observation, and close encounters with woodland animals. It suits viewers looking for nature videography, woodpecker nest footage, birdwatching content, and peaceful outdoor wildlife scenes.

Ideal for anyone searching for wildlife filming in the woods, woodpecker chicks, grey-headed woodpecker nest footage, bird photography, woodland nature video, forest walk wildlife, and relaxing nature observation. It also fits searches for birdwatching, woodland ambience, and quiet wildlife videos for background viewing.

02:01So, hello again my friends.
02:03I hope you are all well.
02:05I've come down this morning to the little forest that I came to quite a few weeks ago now,
02:12at the start of spring, looking for woodpeckers.
02:18And I've come down again today to see if the grey-headed woodpecker that I had spotted then by a
02:23hole...
02:25Sorry, is something flying in?
02:27No.
02:29Yeah, to see if the grey-headed woodpecker that I had spotted back then had actually nested and produced chicks.
02:39So, I've found the same tree and I haven't got a good view of the hole that he was at
02:47then, or she.
02:49But there's a hole further down the tree that looks like there's movement inside.
02:56So, without being sure, there's either one or two chicks, I think, inside.
03:02I can see a little bit of movement.
03:05I think I can see a little tongue sticking in it.
03:07Hold on.
03:13It looks like...
03:15Oh, there's one chick for sure.
03:21Just sticking its little beak out and sticking its tongue out as well.
03:26So, I haven't seen the parent yet, so I'm going to hang around and see if I can get a
03:32shot of the parent arriving,
03:34and then feeding, and then leaving, so that I can cut a little sequence together.
03:40I'm about 50 metres away, I guess, so hopefully I won't be disturbing the parents from coming to and from
03:52the nest.
03:56A little bit too far for a still, though I will try taking some and see what I can get,
04:02and see how much of a crop I can get away with.
04:06So, yeah, I'm going to hang around here for a little bit,
04:10and hopefully I'll get those shots, and then I'll take another walk through the woods here,
04:14and see what else is around.
04:17So, I'll catch up with you in a little while.
04:46I'll catch you in a little while.
04:49Okay, so the parent has just flown in,
04:52and there are two chicks,
04:54both sticking their head out.
04:56One is significantly larger than the other,
04:58so he's probably been born first and getting a better feed than the second.
05:04I'm not sure how it works with the woodpeckers in terms of the chick survival.
05:12They both seem to be getting a feed, though.
05:17I'm really happy with this.
05:30It's absolutely wonderful.
05:33I'm a little bit too far away for the stills,
05:36so I'm going to have to crop into them quite a bit,
05:38and I hope I'm able to hold steady enough on these shots so that it'll be sharp,
05:46because it's really dark under the tree canopy there by the nest,
05:50and I'm on 3,200 ISO,
05:57which is fine for the video,
05:59but for the stills,
06:08it's giving me two hundredths of a second.
06:12Are she still there, the mother, or the father?
06:14I can't tell if it's male, if you know.
06:19And the chicks are begging for more.
06:29Fantastic.
06:39Just having a look around.
06:43So at least I'm not disturbing, which is a good thing.
06:47Otherwise the parent wouldn't have come back at all.
06:53She'll probably wait for me to go before giving up the location of her nest.
07:07That's fine.
07:18Wonderful.
07:29And the baby's still sticking his head out of the hole.
07:34One of the, the larger of the two.
07:46I'm getting eaten alive by the mozzies here at the minute.
08:00Okay, so I think I've got the shot that I wanted.
08:05I'll check and make sure that I've got the still that I wanted as well.
08:10And if I have, then I'll move on and see what else I can find in the woods here.
08:17Hopefully more woodpeckers.
08:19I've seen four or five different varieties of woodpeckers in these woods before.
08:26So with any luck, we'll find some more.
08:29So I'll catch up with you in a bit.
08:43So we'll see you in the middle of the vehicle.
08:44We'll see you then.
08:46Once again, just a 103 in putty sz board out.
08:48Because the two of these are in the Surprise B.
08:49And thevilpeckers are in the north.
08:50And I'll see you in the middle of the 10s in the bridge.
08:53So I'll get you.
08:54Hey, Ruth.
08:55I'll be I'll be you tonight.
09:23I'm just down by the water here.
09:28There's lots of dragonflies and stamperflies, so I'm going to see if I can get some shots
09:36of them.
09:37They're absolutely stunning, beautiful colours, and I can hear a woodworker falling from somewhere
09:46over there as well, so I'm going to hang here for a little bit and see what I can find.
10:02I'm going to hang here for a little bit and see what I can find.
10:12I'm going to hang here for a little bit and see what I can find.
10:36I'm going to hang here for a little bit and see what I can find.
10:39I'm going to hang here for a little bit and see what I can find.
11:10Okay, so that was a little bit of fun, trying to film and get a few shots with the lens
11:19that's way too long, of the little damselflies.
11:23Oh, almost stepped on a tortoise.
11:27Hiding them here.
11:28Let me just give you a quick look at him.
11:45In amongst all the undergrowth there.
11:48So, this is so overgrown now compared to the last time I was here.
11:54I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to make it through, but we shall see.
11:59It's a bit of a jungle.
12:01And there's loads of sting nets.
12:04Ow.
12:06Okay, so I'm going to try and walk through the forest here a little bit to see if I might
12:14find any more nesting holes that are being used.
12:23So, bear with me whilst I struggle through this mess here and try and find something.
12:37Okay, back with you in a bit.
12:38Hey.
12:42Hey.
12:46Hey!
13:12Okay, so I walked myself out of the woods
13:17through the overgrown nettles and managed to get stung
13:24and provide a good feed for the little bloodsuckers
13:31and all I did was hear lots of birds but not actually see them
13:36so I'll come back up onto the embankment
13:40and I'll give it another half hour or so here
13:42see if I can spot anything. There's a couple of holes in the trees here
13:46that I might stick around and see if anything comes back to them
13:51they don't look like they're in use though to be honest
13:57but I'll hang around here nevertheless
14:00and then head back
14:03so just a short one this week
14:07I hope you've enjoyed watching it such as it is
14:09if I do see anything else I will bring it to you in a moment
14:14but until next time thanks again for watching
14:17and I'll see you then see you
14:18thank you
