00:00B. Scott and Gallant with you until 4 o'clock.
00:05Interesting piece in The Athletic where some of the top players' minds were ranked.
00:16As far as who will be NFL MVP, C.J. Stroud did not make the list.
00:25He did not get one vote.
00:26As far as who are the best three QBs in the league, C.J. Stroud did not get a vote.
00:33And as far as who is the best quarterback on a rookie contract, C.J. Stroud, again, did not get
00:40a vote.
00:42C.J. Stroud, disrespect. Fair here?
00:46Yeah, so I actually don't think this is disrespect.
00:48I don't either.
00:49Because I don't think that he should be on any of these lists now.
00:53Now, the one that stands out the most is the rookie contract part because he is still on the rookie
00:59contract.
00:59And not that long ago, C.J. Stroud did have one of the best, if not the best, rookie season
01:05we had ever seen.
01:05Now, of course, Jaden Daniels, who is on this list, up that just the very next season.
01:10But, again, it's not that long ago where you could not argue that he wasn't the best rookie contract that
01:18was out there, certainly the best quarterback rookie contract that was out there.
01:21So the fact that we are two years, three years removed from that, and he's not even in the conversation
01:27he has had.
01:28And we've actually talked about this plenty on shows, whether on this station or on podcasts, of how he's already
01:34had a handful of guys that were drafted after him.
01:37Not just one guy, not just Jaden Daniels, but multiple guys that were drafted after him who have jumped him
01:44in these sort of rankings.
01:45Guys that you would want to start your franchise with, guys on the best quarterbacks on a rookie contract, Drake
01:52May, Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, Bo Nix.
01:55And the Bo Nix one is the one that you really got to hurt, right?
01:58Because that's the one who I don't think is at all better than C.J. Stroud.
02:02I will not even have the conversation.
02:05Drake May, okay.
02:06Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, we can talk.
02:09Bo Nix, absolutely not.
02:11But I also understand how we got here.
02:13The person who voted for Bo Nix, I'm wondering if it was Sean Payton, or if Sean Payton intimidated whoever
02:18had that vote.
02:19I could see that.
02:20To voting because Sean Payton is notoriously an a-hole to those who cover his team.
02:27He definitely has loyalists, intimidated loyalists.
02:30Yeah, and I'm not one of them.
02:31Hey, Sean, remember all those times you couldn't win at the end?
02:36Yeah.
02:37But hey, he wanted to give Bill Belichick his record-breaking win, so I suppose I'll give him a little
02:41bit of a conciliatory nod.
02:43To be fair, this Denver thing is going pretty good.
02:46It is.
02:46It's going pretty good.
02:47I had my doubts going in about all of it.
02:50About Payton, certainly about Bo Nix, because I've never been a believer and still not.
02:54I've got to give him credit for last year.
02:56He's a gussy dude.
02:57He had some really cool moments last year.
02:59Still don't believe in him.
03:00Didn't believe in Sean Payton.
03:01I can't argue with the results, man.
03:03They're pretty good.
03:04They've been good.
03:05Bo Nix is benefiting from getting hurt in that game against the Bills, because everyone's of the belief that, well,
03:15had he played against the Patriots, the Broncos go on to the Super Bowl.
03:20And maybe.
03:21I mean, he was terrible.
03:23Jared Stidham, when he came into that game.
03:26Maybe.
03:27But don't forget, there are two sides of Bo Nix.
03:31And the second side of Bo Nix is much more volatile than the worst of C.J. Stroud, which is
03:38saying something.
03:39Because obviously C.J. Stroud played the worst game of his life against the DeWiglia Patriots in the second round
03:43of the playoffs.
03:43He's not good.
03:44Credit where it's due.
03:45He had some moments last year.
03:46He's not good.
03:46You know who is good?
03:48Just a side note.
03:49Jordan Alvarez went deep.
03:501-0 Astros.
03:51He's pretty good.
03:52In the bottom of the first inning.
03:54He gets his flowers.
03:56Obviously, C.J. Stroud not getting his flowers.
03:57And he hasn't been hitting home runs as much lately.
03:59So that's a good sight to see.
04:01He's still a beast.
04:02He had a couple of singles the other day.
04:05I mean, he still does his thing.
04:06But the power has not been there as much lately.
04:09So it's good to see him take one out of the yard.
04:12Especially as he is chasing that triple crown.
04:14And I do find it crazy how good he is against left-handed pitching.
04:18Yeah.
04:19Sticking, bringing it back to the Houston Texans and this piece in The Athletic.
04:23Talking about some of the best quarterbacks.
04:26Some of the best players.
04:28Some of the best minds.
04:30As far as the best defensive player in the league.
04:34And specifically, the best defensive closer.
04:37Only one player received more votes than Will Anderson Jr.
04:42Miles Garrett, 16 votes.
04:45Will Anderson, 11.
04:47No one with more than four votes after Anderson.
04:51That's overwhelming.
04:52Daniil Hunter had one vote, by the way, at the very bottom.
04:56Defensive closer per The Athletic is alphas who can end a game on defense.
05:03With upper-level quarterbacks able to put so much pressure on their opponents,
05:07it takes a special defender who can answer the challenge.
05:10Garrett, the best defensive player of the post-Aaron Donald era,
05:14goaded the legend out of retirement.
05:17Yada, yada, yada.
05:18A lot about Miles Garrett out there.
05:21But as we get a little bit further in,
05:24Anderson also dominated the vote, writes this piece in The Athletic.
05:27He's a psychopath in a good way, an assistant coach said.
05:30He'll rip your face off.
05:31Another head coach said,
05:33I've got a ton of respect for what they're doing in Houston.
05:35I think Anderson is a problem.
05:37We all agree he is the heart and soul of this defense,
05:41along with Aziz Alshair and Kamari Lasseter.
05:43Yeah, the heart and soul of the defense and really the face of the team,
05:46the face of the franchise, at least in terms of players are concerned.
05:50Look at that Sports Illustrated article where, yeah,
05:53there's the picture of the whole Texans defense,
05:54but there's also an individual cover where it's just Will Anderson
05:57doing a GQ shoot, essentially.
06:00Yeah, there's no way around it.
06:02I mean, he is the face of the team, clearly,
06:04but as it pertains to this part about him being one of the best defensive
06:09closers in the NFL, only second to Miles Garrett, according to this survey,
06:13like being next to Miles Garrett is one thing.
06:16Look at the names that he's ahead of, right?
06:18Max Crosby, T.J. Watt, Micah Parsons, Aiden Hutchinson, Patrick Sertan, right?
06:24These are guys who are more established or established before Will Anderson Jr.,
06:31and he has now surpassed them.
06:33So the inverse of the C.J. Stroud conversation of guys who came in after him,
06:38surpassing him in terms of how they're viewed by the public,
06:40this is the opposite of that.
06:42These are guys who were established before Will Anderson Jr.,
06:44who people now trust less than Will Anderson Jr.,
06:47only next to Miles Garrett.
06:49It just shows you how big of a season that the guy had last year.
06:52So, yeah, man, I think he's got to be – I mean, I don't know if there's another way
06:57to say it other than he's the best defensive player that there is
07:00that's not Miles Garrett.
07:01If you view him as the best defensive closer – because I had this debate,
07:05do you still look at Patrick Sertan?
07:06Because since he's the best corner, a guy who's the best at his position
07:10definitively, more so than Will Anderson, I'm like, nah, man.
07:13People can tell the impact of an edge rusher who is on the level of a Miles Garrett type.
07:19I think when it comes to corner, it's just tough to argue that the impact of one player
07:23who is covering one side of the field can match that of a pass rusher,
07:28though we have occasionally seen corners like Stephon Gilmore,
07:31when defensive player of the year, it should usually go to a pass rusher
07:34in the same way MVP should usually go to a quarterback.
07:37But I want to bring it back to Will Anderson for a moment,
07:40and I don't want to throw a friend of mine under the bus, a colleague of mine,
07:45but I remember when working at another radio station doing a draft night party,
07:51I remember after the big trade that the Texans had made up to go and get Will Anderson
07:56that someone at this very radio station said, quote,
08:01it is a day that will live in infamy because he felt they gave up too much
08:05to go and get Will Anderson.
08:07And nothing has been more satisfying to me, not to see this person specifically wrong
08:11because I do enjoy this fellow, but more so to see the amount of draft orcs
08:15who are losing their mind over the amount of value the Texans gave up
08:20to go and get this player.
08:21All of you should be publicly shamed for that every single time Will Anderson is brought up
08:28because there were a lot of people that did not buy into it.
08:31And, you know, leading up to that draft, remember how much buzz it was a tight ship.
08:36The Texans have been really good at keeping things close to the vest.
08:39I mean, shoot, we still don't know what happened to Joe Mixon,
08:41but they were letting some things get out about their love for Will Anderson
08:47to the point where I think a lot of us, B-Scott, thought they were going to take Will Anderson
08:51and that was going to be it.
08:52I'm of the belief, and I don't have any way to corroborate this,
08:56I'm of the belief that the Texans, realizing what the fan base had been,
08:59thought to themselves, no, we need to get a quarterback.
09:01Let's put a little pressure on them to go get a quarterback.
09:03Casario, D'Amico, you got to get a quarterback, but anything after that is fine.
09:07And then they still got their guy, and they made the absolute right call.
09:11They believed in this guy.
09:12They thought he was going to be a great leader to what we've talked about.
09:14And this pick has been such a home run.
09:16We all talk about the Deshaun Watson trade, but this to me,
09:19like for Nick Casario and D'Amico Ryan for their entire tenure,
09:23these two getting on the same page, making this happen,
09:26and to see how it has panned out at the NFL level,
09:29this is the reason that the Texans are a AFC title contender,
09:34if not necessarily a Super Bowl contender.
09:36I think that's all Will said because I was actually one of the people at the time
09:40who did not want them to draft a defensive player high in that scenario
09:45because I just remember how bad the offense was,
09:48how badly they needed a quarterback, but I thought they needed weapons too.
09:51So I was all offense in that draft.
09:53I remember being that way to the point where I was concerned,
09:57and this was nothing against Will Landerson Jr.
09:58This was just like at the time it was Tyree Wilson too,
10:01which shout out to the Texans for doing the right thing,
10:04actually picking the correct defensive player and not the wrong one,
10:07but also just feeling like offense was just much more at a premium
10:11and should have been more of a priority at the time.
10:14Nothing against Will Landerson, but I was so concerned about it
10:17that they would pick Will Landerson high, and then with their second pick,
10:21they would use that to get whatever quarterback was left over,
10:24whether that had been Anthony Richardson at the time,
10:26who ended up going forward, but we could have seen dropping all the way down
10:29to wherever, and we see how that worked out, or even Will Levis, right?
10:33Because he's the top pick of the second round by the Titans,
10:36and he could have been a pick there.
10:38So that was the thing I was concerned about,
10:40that they would pick Will Landerson first, not do the trade.
10:43I didn't see the trade coming, obviously.
10:45So that they would not do the trade, pick the defensive player first,
10:49and then just settle for whatever quarterback was left over
10:51once they got to 12 or whatever it was that they had at the time.
10:55I was much more in favor of, let's draft the quarterback,
10:59and if you want to move up to get anybody, it should be B. John Robinson,
11:04because obviously I'm a Texans fan, and B. John Robinson is a boss, right?
11:07So I think I'm actually vindicated on that, but at the same time,
11:12the Will Landerson thing, the whole reason to not want Will Landerson
11:15would have had to have just been not knowing anything about Will Landerson Jr., right?
11:19Like, clearly you didn't watch Alabama, you haven't heard him in an interview setting,
11:23or been able to understand why the personality is kind of magnetic on top of,
11:28like the whole culture cliche stuff goes in with the football part.
11:32You're like, oh, I see this, the leadership part, the culture setting,
11:36the example and all of that meshing in with how elite of a talent that he is on top of
11:41it.
11:41You have to understand that to fully understand why it was that they would go
11:45against the draft nerd grades of what you should do.
11:48This is a different type of player that doesn't necessarily account for,
11:53or that the calculation can't account for, what kind of culture setter he could be.
11:57He is proof that whatever Nick Casario's checklist is for finding a swarm mentality player
12:05is about damn perfect.
12:07And as far as, you know, you want to bring this to a court of law or something like this,
12:11I don't think there would be anyone that you would want better to cross-reference this list
12:18and to put a witness on the stand and determine whether or not this person is swarm-worthy
12:24than D'Amico Ryans.
12:26Like, D'Amico Ryans is essentially, in this little imaginary setting,
12:30I'm creating just an absolutely terrifying lawyer, you know,
12:34whether it's Johnny Cochran from back in the day or Tony Busby from today.
12:39Hey, if this guy has got you in his crosshairs, he is going to get to the truth.
12:44And that brings us to the last part of this NFL predictions.
12:47This is an outrage.
12:49This is actually an outrage.
12:51I've had questions about D'Amico Ryans in the past about,
12:53hey, what's his ceiling as a head coach?
12:55I've never thought he was a bad head coach,
12:56but I remember the 2024 season where they're having all these team meetings
12:59and they don't seem to be learning from any of their mistakes.
13:02That was really difficult for me.
13:03And I brought it up and a lot of people were like,
13:05oh, you wouldn't say this if this guy wasn't black.
13:07I was like, no, man, I mean, like, listen, they've had three team meetings in a week.
13:10This is kind of crazy.
13:11But I've always thought to myself, I mean, this is much like Mike Vrabel is,
13:15leader of men, everyone wants to play for this guy.
13:17And it's just a matter of him finding the right guys.
13:20The fact that D'Amico Ryans is not considered one of the best defensive minds in the NFL,
13:26not even one vote.
13:27Mike McDonald, Brian Flores got eight and a half.
13:30Brian Flores got three and a half.
13:31Vic Fangio, three.
13:33Steve Spagnuolo, two.
13:34Lou Anarumo.
13:36Lou Anarumo?
13:37With that Colts defense, they have some good moments in Cincinnati.
13:40Insane that D'Amico Ryans did not get one thought as the best defensive mind in the NFL.
13:46Crazy.
13:47You've got to draw the line at Lou.
13:49That's where you absolutely have to draw the line.
13:51Everybody else on that list you can make a case for,
13:53at least understand why somebody would vote for them over D'Amico Ryans.
13:57Of course, with McDonald, they just won the Super Bowl, had a great defense.
14:02You get it.
14:03Brian Flores has been one of the more respected defensive coaches for a long time
14:07and has revived that with the Vikings since he's been there.
14:11So you get that.
14:12Vic Fangio is one of the greatest defensive minds of all time.
14:15So you understand that.
14:17Steve Spagnuolo, for me, Spags, for my money, could be at the top of this list.
14:23I like him just as much as anybody in the game.
14:26So I get all four of those.
14:28I've got to draw the line at Lou.
14:30You mean Lou gets a vote and D'Amico doesn't get a vote?
14:32How is that possible?
14:34I would take some exception to the ordering of this list.
14:38I don't think Mike should be at the very top, even though I get why he is.
14:42I would have Fangio or Spags over him.
14:45And I certainly would have D'Amico on this list over Lou.
14:49What are we doing?
14:50Totally here.
14:50What are we doing?
14:50A couple of texts from the 281.
14:52Hopefully the players take it personally.
14:54Look, I think they take every other offense's existence personally.
14:58This is a defense that's out there to kill people.
15:01Somebody else texted him.
15:02This is interesting from the 346.
15:04TJ Watt tied the all-time record in 15 games, what, for a sacks in a season.
15:08I love Will Anderson.
15:09He needs a few Defensive Player of the Year awards to be the best defensive player.
15:12I will say this.
15:12As far as odds for Defensive Player of the Year this year,
15:17I mean, Will Anderson, at plus 650, he's the second leader.
15:23And it depends on the sportsbook.
15:25Some of them are plus 500.
15:27But I feel pretty good about Will Anderson as Defensive Player of the Year,
15:31maybe as part of some sort of season's future parlay, if you're into gambling,
15:34which I am not really the biggest gamer.
15:35But this is also my argument of going against the argument of what a guy has done
15:42throughout his career.
15:43Obviously, all of these other players have had longer careers
15:46and have had more time to accomplish these things.
15:48This is less about what is the guy's resume,
15:51and it is what are you seeing from him out there on the field.
15:54And it's hard to argue that right now TJ Watt is better than Will Anderson.
15:59Of course, TJ Watt has been a Defensive Player of the Year.
16:02He's been an all-pro more than Will Anderson.
16:05He's been around longer than Will Anderson.
16:07But Anderson right now looks like a beast.
16:10Looks like he's just as good as anybody that's not named Miles Garrett.
16:14B. Scott, Paul Gallant, B. Scott and Gallant on 95.7.
