Bryan Cook on Being Named Bengals Captain, State of Defense Entering Week 1
Transcript
00:00I was telling you guys, it's an honor and a privilege being here with learning the guys,
00:04learning the system, things like that, learning the coaches for that matter.
00:08But building the trust, I feel like that's the main thing.
00:10If you go back to the first few interviews, that was kind of the thing I was trying to harp
00:13on,
00:14just building trust with the guys.
00:16I understand they depend on me.
00:18So for me, it's an honor and a gift.
00:21You know what I'm saying?
00:21It's a privilege to be a part of this group here, to consider a captain for that matter.
00:26I'm trying to see what he's doing right there.
00:29But just to be part of the team and lead this team to something we can hopefully talk about for
00:33years after this.
00:35What's the biggest thing you can offer your teammates as captain?
00:41Dependency.
00:41You know, something you depend on back there.
00:43You know, come to hell or hot water, you know, do all the storms, whatever that may bring.
00:49I'm back.
00:51Appreciate it.
00:52What can you tell us about home?
00:54What's my question?
00:56I think you answered it.
00:57The most of the thing that you can bring your team.
01:00Yeah, being dependable.
01:01With guys like D-Knight, you know, having a young crew like him and this guy next to them.
01:07Just someone they can depend on, you know what I'm saying, on the back end.
01:12And then, you know, like you said, a leader.
01:13But someone just, like you said before, just to lean on when times are rough.
01:17What have you learned from captains in your past that, you know, kind of stand out?
01:22My bad.
01:23Bro, you gone?
01:24I was waiting on my turn.
01:27I'm back.
01:27Go ahead.
01:28What have you learned from captains in your past that, you know, kind of stand out for you?
01:33Kind of something I can say, kind of a point on.
01:36You know what I'm saying?
01:36Even my guy, D-Knight, you know, he's the captain of his own way as well.
01:40But just being dependable, you know what I'm saying?
01:41Being a leader, being vocal when he needs to be vocal.
01:44You know what I'm saying?
01:45Leading by example, you know what I'm saying?
01:46Pulling guys along.
01:47You know, tough days out there.
01:49And then, you know what I'm saying, just never being, you know, unwavering, I guess you
01:52could say.
01:53You know what I'm saying?
01:53Keep everything steadfast and being grounded with everything.
01:57It's going to be a long, long season.
02:00But with the title of being a captain, you know what I'm saying?
02:02I know to me it's a crown on my head I have to wear.
02:05And they say, you know, heavy is a head to wear the crown.
02:07So I know there's a lot of eyes on me for that matter.
02:09But I only care about that, more about the guys and building the trust day in, day out
02:13and be able to depend on me.
02:14I think that's what ultimately drives me to wake up every day and come here with that fire.
02:17Do you know enough about this locker room yet, Brian, to know which players need the kind
02:23of communication that is most appropriate?
02:26Because maybe guys, DJ was talking about this as a captain.
02:29One of the things he thinks he knows already is which players get motivated in which ways.
02:34Yeah, I mean, I suppose back to, like I said before, you know, the previous interviews
02:39before, just knowing the guys, you know, learning the guys.
02:42I've spent time with, you know, Draco, I think they call it, DJ Turner.
02:46I think guys are Dax, JB, D-Night, and just even Lawrence for that matter.
02:51Just learning guys, learning their story, learning what they're about.
02:55And ultimately, you know, how to respond to certain things.
02:57Just, you know, everybody's growing.
02:58Everybody at the end of the day is a grown man to have, you know, worry some things that
03:02you can go through each day.
03:04So every day might be different.
03:05I might have worried it different for that matter.
03:07But at the end of the day, just find a way to reach everyone.
03:09I think that's the most difficult part as being a captain or being a leader.
03:13But that's also the most interesting part, too, because it's kind of like feeling a puzzle
03:16every day.
03:17It's a pleasure, you know, seeing a guy's face light up and make a play or you help him
03:20make something.
03:22And for instance, like giving D-Night a tip on a run read and he shoot the gap and get
03:27a TFL.
03:28It's like, that makes me feel as well as if I made the play myself.
03:31You know what I'm saying?
03:33But at times of when the chaos comes, I need to know how to reach that person in that moment.
03:37I think that goes back to like learning about them, the life and the lifestyle and the upbringing
03:43and things like that.
03:43What was it like to reunite?
03:45Is it more meaningful for you to just be a captain, but your hometown team being able
03:49to have a seat on your chest on a bag of his uniform?
03:51Oh, absolutely.
03:52It's a dream come true.
03:54But I know it's a couple of a lot of responsibility.
03:57It's kind of just more just like praying to God, like, hey, just make sure that I'm prepared
04:01for what's to come.
04:01You know what I'm saying?
04:02But at the end of the day, like I said, the goal is to the goal.
04:04As a matter of fact, I just see my chest or anything like that.
04:07They give me a jersey and a name on my back.
04:09So it's all to be thankful for.
04:10You know, everything else is kind of just ice on the cake.
04:12What was it like to reunite with Travis on Saturday at the season opener?
04:16What was it like to reunite with Travis at Saturday at the season opener?
04:19Shout out to Travis.
04:19I know he got married recently, too.
04:21So shout out to him.
04:22It was nice.
04:22You know, UC got dubs.
04:24Shout out to UC as well.
04:25Nice little dub, actually.
04:26So seeing him, seeing his brother, too, you know, two guys that kind of paved the way
04:30for me to come through that organization as well.
04:32It's definitely a nice time.
04:34Week one, the Bucs obviously led by Baker.
04:36He was an MVP candidate earlier or early last year.
04:40What kind of a challenge does he post?
04:42I mean, you go back to him as he was in college.
04:45Like, he's always been that guy that collided out the field at any given moment.
04:49You know what I'm saying?
04:50Nothing's changed from here.
04:51And you go back to him and even give him a little more.
04:53Like, you got to understand.
04:54So he's in a situation where he left a team.
04:57You got to get a traitor, release him, like that.
04:59What's the next team?
05:00And start winning off rib.
05:01You know, that's tough to do in any league, let alone the NFL.
05:05So with that, you got to respect that.
05:06You know what I'm saying?
05:07And he's been doing it for years.
05:08So as a guy, as a guy that's going against him as a corner, I got to respect that, too.
05:11But at the same time, trying to figure out, you know what I'm saying, what he does best
05:14and try to make him play left-handed.
