00:07Forced to leave the forests of North Kivu, their natural home,
00:11the indigenous Pygma community are trying to rebuild its life.
00:18In Omdoman, Sudan, the currency crisis is driving up the price of essential goods.
00:30At the Venice Film Festival, Woman Unknown reveals the secret of a woman navigating the upheavals of the post-war
00:37period.
00:41Hello, you're watching Africa News today.
00:44Fleeing violence by the ADF, Pygmy communities in Beni, in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,
00:49are surviving in makeshift camps far from the forest and their traditional sources of livelihood.
00:54These families are calling for help in a report by Malaika Elize.
00:58In Beni, Eastern DR Congo, Pygmy families have left everything behind to flee rebel attacks.
01:07Since May, they've been living in Bwikene, in makeshift shelters.
01:12Deprived of their land and forest, they're struggling to survive far from their traditional way of life.
01:19We spent the night in very poor conditions.
01:21We have no roof.
01:23We sleep on the ground without blankets or any protection.
01:26We fled the forest because the war forced us to.
01:30The attackers killed some people and took others into the forest.
01:33We could no longer stay there.
01:35Conditions at the site remain particularly difficult.
01:39The shelters are precarious and resources are scarce.
01:43Food, clothing and health care are among the most urgent needs.
01:47For this already marginalised community, displacement has only made things worse.
01:54We were simply asking for peace so that we, the first inhabitants, can return to our forests
02:00and find our former way of life because we are suffering enormously.
02:06Human rights defenders are sounding the alarm.
02:09They're calling for more assistance for these families as the region is also facing an Ebola outbreak.
02:18What's happening in this camp is truly inhumane and it has to stop because it's horrible.
02:24They're living a painful life.
02:26They're living without shelter.
02:29We're calling on the international community to act in the face of this scourge affecting our country.
02:36Far from their forests and fields, these families remain in extreme hardship.
02:41Their return is highly uncertain as attacks against civilians continue in the region.
02:48At least five deaths have already been reported in the camp, according to site officials.
02:56In Libya, five people, including foreign nationals, have been arrested in Tripoli following drone attacks on energy facilities.
03:03Authorities say they have uncovered a large-scale sabotage network targeting strategic installations.
03:10Authorities in Western Libya say they've arrested five people in connection with a recent string of drone attacks on a
03:17major energy facility.
03:19The government said the arrests exposed a vast plot and described the attacks as part of a coordinated campaign by
03:27a sabotage cell.
03:28It said foreigners are among the suspects but didn't give further details.
03:33In August, a large petrol reservoir in Zawiyah caught fire after being struck by a drone.
03:40Another attack was reportedly thwarted last week.
03:44Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa, but the country has been beset by violence and instability since the
03:52overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
03:55Two governments are currently vying for power.
03:58The UN-recognized administration in Tripoli and a rival in the east, backed by military commander Khalifa Haftar.
04:07Millions of girls are being denied their childhood.
04:10The United Nations has launched an international day to tackle child and forced marriage, a scourge that continues to affect
04:18girls around the world.
04:19The initiative is backed by Sierra Leone.
04:23The United Nations has designated November 27th as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.
04:33The resolution was led by Sierra Leone and adopted by the General Assembly.
04:39Sierra Leone's First Lady, Fatima Marder-Bio, championed the initiative after a call by Buwan Rupu, the founder of the
04:48civil society network Just Rights for Children.
04:51Every year, an estimated 12 million girls worldwide are married before the age of 18.
04:59Some 650 million women and girls alive today were married as children, according to the UN Children's Agency UNICEF.
05:09Sierra Leone hailed the passage of the resolution, saying it would accelerate progress towards ending child marriage.
05:18In Sudan, the collapse of the national currency is driving up the cost of essential goods.
05:25Sugar, beans and lentils are becoming increasingly difficult to afford, deepening an already severe economic crisis.
05:34In Omdaman's markets, everyday shopping is becoming a struggle.
05:38As Sudan's currency loses value, prices for essentials are surging.
05:43Sugar, beans, lentils and onions are all getting more expensive.
05:49Sweden families and sellers are already facing a deepening economic crisis.
05:57Everything is extremely expensive and I hope the government puts a stop to this rise because it's just unbelievable.
06:03The dollar exchange rate has reached 700 Sudanese pound and any merchant who has goods is hiding them
06:09because if they sell them, they won't be able to buy them at the same price.
06:13They'll have to buy them at a higher price and that's why the market is completely at a standstill.
06:19Since war erupted in April of 2023, Sudan's resources have been diverted to fighting,
06:25while poverty, unemployment, hunger and food insecurity increases.
06:29Due to the economic conditions, people are unable to afford food and drink.
06:36It's hard for people to afford food and medical treatment.
06:46The Sudanese pound has plunged while the dollar surged to over 150% on the parallel market,
06:53driving up import costs and prices for basic goods.
06:58The rise in the dollar's value and the collapse of the currency have a significant impact on the daily lives
07:04of citizens
07:04because as the dollar rises, so do the prices of food and all other necessities.
07:11The crisis has devastated wages.
07:14Civil servants, teachers, health workers and pensioners can only afford a fraction of basic needs,
07:21forcing millions to cut spending on food, medicine and education or rely on debt and aid.
07:32At the Venice Film Festival, Danish-Egyptian filmmaker May El-Tuki presents Woman Unknown,
07:38a historical drama set at the end of the Second World War.
07:42The only film directed by a woman in this year's competition.
07:45It is competing for the prestigious Golden Lion.
07:51The period film is the sole female-directed entry in this year's Venice competition,
07:57down from six of 21 films last year.
08:00Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera called the figure a historic law in recent years.
08:06Set in the aftermath of Denmark's liberation from Nazi occupation,
08:12Woman Unknown stars Matilda Arcel as Marie,
08:15a young nanny preparing to marry Christiane,
08:19a wealthy older widower for whom she works.
08:22But Marie is hiding a secret.
08:25During World War II, she had an intimate relationship with a German soldier,
08:30and as the war ends, her past threatens the new life and social status she hopes to build.
08:37Danish-Egyptian filmmaker El-Tuki co-wrote the screenplay with Marie-Louise Cayenne,
08:43who also collaborated with her on Queen of Hearts.
08:52And as every week on Africa News Today, here are some key dates to remember.
