00:00We knew there were COVID infections in nursing homes. Now we're learning the shocking numbers.
00:05A new report from the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human
00:09Services found that of the 15,000 nursing homes it examined, more than 1,300 of them had a COVID
00:15infection rate of over 75 percent in 2020. Unsurprisingly, that high infection rate meant
00:21high mortality. The report also found during the first surge in cases, urban nursing homes were
00:26more likely to have a high number of cases. During the second surge, rural ones were likely to have that
00:32high rate of cases. The for-profit nursing homes accounted for a disproportionate number of
00:37infections. The report concludes recommending the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
00:42examine and potentially modify nursing staff requirements for infection control.
