00:04Humankind is set to head back to the moon by 2030, all in the hopes of setting up a moon
00:09base as a stepping stone to Mars.
00:11But despite our past visits there, the moon isn't really all that hospitable for humans, with no atmosphere and both
00:16extremely hot and extremely cold temperatures.
00:19But it turns out there are some places on its gray, dusty surface that might be better than others.
00:24Science Alert reports that places like this, deep pits and caves which litter the moon's surface, house temperatures reminiscent of
00:30a spring day on Earth, rather than an alien world.
00:32New calculations on these moon pits reveals many of them could be around 63 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:37That's because the sunlit areas of the pits can reach upwards of 372 degrees.
00:42That heat then warms the shaded parts, allowing them to stay at a more neutral temperature.
00:47And the researchers say this means that the underground areas these pits create could be the perfect spot for a
00:52moon base.
00:52With planetary scientist David Page saying, quote,
00:55Humans evolved living in caves, and to caves we might return when we live on the moon.
00:59What's more, living in caves would also provide protection from asteroid impacts.
01:03Impacts like the ones that created these pits in the first place.
