🦈 YOU’VE SEEN JAWS—BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED BEHIND THE CAMERA?

Steven Spielberg's Jaws was released in 1975 and became a movie phenomenon that helped establish the modern summer blockbuster.

But making it was anything but easy!

🦈 The enormous mechanical shark was nicknamed “Bruce.” Even better, the nickname reportedly came from the name of Spielberg's lawyer!

🌊 Spielberg and his crew filmed extensively on the real ocean around Martha's Vineyard, creating enormous technical challenges. Principal photography began in May 1974 and didn't wrap until 159 days later.

😱 Bruce kept malfunctioning! Instead of destroying the movie, the mechanical shark's problems forced Spielberg to suggest the shark's presence through camera angles, editing, the floating yellow barrels and John Williams' ominous music. That limitation became one of the movie's greatest strengths.

🎬 And that legendary line about needing a bigger boat? Roy Scheider's famous line was reportedly improvised rather than originally scripted.

🎵 John Williams' terrifying score became one of cinema's most recognizable, and Jaws ultimately won three Academy Awards: Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Original Score.

🎥 The production even filmed real sharks in Australia. Because the real sharks were smaller than the movie's gigantic mechanical shark, filmmakers used tricks involving a smaller shark cage and a short stunt performer to alter the apparent scale.

Fifty years later, Jaws remains one of cinema's most influential movies—and its chaotic production story makes its success even more remarkable. 🦈🔥
