The Smiths' Johnny Marr's guitars to go under hammer at Christie's

Around 80 guitars from the personal collection of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr are to be auctioned for charity at Christie’s in London. The instruments, which were part of a press preview on Tuesday (September 8), represent Marr’s four-decade career, including his work with The Smiths, and The Pretenders.

The collection also features vintage posters, amplifiers, tape recorders and other equipment, with estimates ranging from £500 to £150,000. Leading the sale is the 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355 (estimate £100,000-£150,000) which was purchased for Marr in New York in 1984 by Sire Records founder Seymour Stein after Marr joked The Smiths would sign to his label if Stein bought him a new guitar. Another highlight is the Cherry Gibson Les Paul Standard which was used on several tracks on The Smiths' second album "Meat is Murder".

Marr is donating the full hammer price from 31 of the lots to the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity and the National Autistic Society. A free exhibition of the lots opens on at Christie's in London on Wednesday, ahead of the auction on September 17.
