00:01A tram depot and diesel station dating back to 1912 has been given a new purpose in the center of
00:09Tashkent.
00:10Reimagined by Paris-based studio K.O., the industrial building is now home to Uzbekistan's first permanent center dedicated to
00:18contemporary art.
00:19The Center for Contemporary Arts Tashkent is designed not only for exhibitions, but also as a place where artists can
00:27research, collaborate and develop new work.
00:30President Shavgat Mirzioy visited the center ahead of its public opening, presenting it as part of Uzbekistan's effort to give
00:38greater visibility to contemporary culture.
00:52It's a negral exhibition, meaning wisdom, features 11 works by Uzbek and international artists, including new commissions created specifically for
01:03the space.
01:04The program reflects the center's broader aim to give contemporary artists in Uzbekistan a permanent institutional base while connecting them
01:13with wide international networks.
01:14There are so many more different ways of making art today, through technology, through traditional media, through documentation, through writing,
01:24through music, performance, and all of that will have a place here at CCA Tashkent.
01:29Among the Uzbek artists exhibiting here is Shahrouk Rahimov, a seventh-generation ceramicist.
01:36His installation explores colors through the teaching of the Central Asian Sufi scholar Najmad-Denkubra, linking contemporary practice with an
01:44intellectual tradition rooted in the region.
01:47I'm presenting my composition, which I call it as a color of silence in search of truth.
01:52By learning the philosophy behind the School of Najmad-Denkubra, I learned a lot about colors, because each color symbolizes
02:01the different states of the human inner growth.
02:03The opening exhibition is intended as the starting point for a year-round program of performances, education, and public events.
02:11The very aim is to connect Uzbekistan artists with the world context.
02:17This is the first project we have, which will serve as a great platform for the young artists and overall
02:27creative community of Uzbekistan.
02:30That vision extends beyond the creators, with the center conceived as a shared cultural space open to wider audiences.
02:39It is something living, renewed through encounter and curiosity.
02:44What we open here today, I believe, shows what collective effort and genuine commitment to culture as a public good
02:53can achieve.
02:54For visitors, it offers a different way to experience Tashkent beyond its historic heritage.
03:00The center adds a new institution to Uzbekistan's cultural landscape, giving contemporary art a permanent space.
