Volcanic rocks and lava reaches villages in eastern Indonesia following eruption

Volcanic rocks and cooled lava flowed close to villages around Indonesia's Mount Lewotolok after an eruption on Tuesday (September 8), sending ash and volcanic matter towards residential areas and farms in East Nusa Tenggara Province's Lembata region. The national volcanology agency has barred activities within a 3-kilometre radius of the mountain, and urged residents to wear masks as air quality has dropped, according to a statement.

The volcano is one of about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which straddles the "Pacific Ring of Fire," a highly seismically active zone where different plates on the Earth's crust meet to create a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The eruption is the latest in a series of volcanic activity around Indonesia.
