Marcos to attend BRICS summit as Asean chairman

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announces that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s participation in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) Summit over the weekend was due to his capacity as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) chairman. Marcos is set to attend the summit in New Delhi with First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro, Department of Information and Communications Technology Henry Aguda, and Finance Secretary Frederick Go. During a press briefing on Sept. 9, 2026, DFA spokesman Analyn Ratonel said Marcos’ participation would provide an opportunity to align regional perspectives with emerging global economic frameworks while directly engaging with leaders of major developing economies. Marcos is scheduled to leave the country for India on Sept. 12 and return on Sept. 13.
