00:01The Supreme Court clears Imelda Marcos in seven graft cases.
00:05Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez goes to the hospital instead of jail,
00:10despite a warrant of arrest. Vice President Sara Duterte accuses the government of child abuse.
00:15The Philippines improves its reading, mathematics, and science rankings in 2025,
00:20according to an international assessment. And Iran launches ballistic missiles and
00:25attacks 10 U.S. ships in Jordan.
00:35The Supreme Court First Division acquits the mother of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,
00:39Imelda Marcos, in her graft cases related to Swiss foundations.
00:43The SC Division overturns the Sandigan Bayan's November 2018 decision that convicted the 97-year-old
00:49former First Lady of seven counts of graft. In its decision, the SC Division says the prosecution
00:55failed to prove Marcos' guilt beyond reasonable doubt, which is the threshold needed to convict
01:00an accused in criminal cases. Marcos was charged for alleged violation of Section 3H of the Antigraft
01:06Law, which has the following elements. The accused is a public officer. The accused has direct or
01:10indirect financial interest in any business, contract, or transaction. And the accused either
01:15intervened or took part in his or her official capacity. The SC says it's undisputed that the first
01:20element is present, but the second and third elements are contested. The Office of the Ombudsman
01:25presented documentary and testimonial evidence to prove Marcos' financial interest. But the High
01:30Court says they were inadmissible and lack probative weight.
01:35Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez avoids detention by getting hospitalized despite his
01:40arrest for a non-bailable plunder case courtesy of the Office of the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman charged
01:46the later representative on Monday, September 7. He allegedly got 7.44 billion pesos in kickbacks
01:51from flood control and other government projects. But as of September 9, Romualdez remains confined
01:56in a hospital in San Juan City, evading his supposed detention. Past lunchtime on Monday,
02:02Ombudsman Boeing Remulia announced the filing of plunder against Romualdez. Interior and Local
02:07Government Chief John Vic Remulia said earlier that day they were ready to arrest the former Speaker.
02:12But Romualdez went to Cardinal Santos Medical Center by 4 p.m. that day before the police could arrest him.
02:18Ayan ang mahirap dito eh. Wala kaming karapatan. Nai-intercept sila bago lubabas yung warrant of arrest.
02:26So, telegraphed lagi kasi. Na-file na. Alam nilang na raffle na. So, inuunahan nila.
02:33The Romualdez camp filed at 6.30 p.m. an urgent motion for continued hospital confinement under custody.
02:39Before 8 p.m., Remulia announced outside the hospital that Romualdez had been arrested.
02:44The Philippine National Police implemented the warrant, read his rights, and took his mugshot while he was in bed.
02:50As of this reporting, Romualdez remains at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center
02:54until the court resolves his motion for hospital confinement.
02:59Vice President Sara Duterte accuses the Marcos government of child abuse because of law enforcers
03:04reported continued surveillance of her family. Duterte made the statement on Monday, September 7,
03:10two days after posting bail in a grave threats case filed against her over remarks against
03:14President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family. She also told the media at the time that she feared
03:19for her life. She said Interior Secretary John Vic Remulia and the police had admitted that they knew
03:24her whereabouts because of their surveillance activities. Duterte accused the government of
03:28putting her family, including her children, at risk. She also said that since her security is linked to the
03:34armed forces of the Philippines following the constitutional line of succession, she made
03:38quote, several important requests to former AFP Chief General Romeo Bronner. Batremulia said in a
03:43press briefing, Never did we enter her house to harass her mother or her children.
03:50Nor, ayan, that is, gabi-gabi naman and dyan dyan talaga yan, just to provide deterrence
03:54kung may gusto mangyari kay Vice President. SOP yan, SOP yan.
04:00The Philippines' performance in the program for international student assessment improves in 2025,
04:06with the country climbing out of the bottom 10 in the subjects covered. This marks improvement in
04:11reading, mathematics, and science rankings. The Philippines ranks 72nd out of 90 countries in
04:17reading, 74th in mathematics, and 77th out of 91 countries in science. The Organization for Economic
04:24Cooperation and Development, which conducts the test, describes the Philippines as the fastest
04:28improving country in terms of reading performance. The Department of Education notes this is the
04:33Philippines' strongest piece of performance to date, since the country first joined a global
04:37assessment in 2018 and again in 2022, where it saw dismal results both times. The agency adds that
04:44while it is an improvement, it should be seen as a starting point and highlights the work that remains.
04:51Iran's Revolutionary Guard launches ballistic missiles at a base in Jordan used by the U.S.
04:56military and attacks 10 ships. This after the U.S. said it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in a
05:02sharp escalation of the six-month-old war. Increased attacks by both countries shatter a
05:07month of relative calm, hitting military, shipping, and energy assets. The Americans say they destroyed
05:12five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday. The U.S. military's Central Command calls it
05:17a response to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeting a U.S. Navy warship twice with
05:22ballistic missiles but no Americans were harmed. It also reports Iran's missile strikes were largely
05:27ineffective with Jordan intercepting most missiles. Meantime, oil prices surged due to concerns over
05:33disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict expands with Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, further
05:39destabilizing the region. And that's today's wrap. I'm JC Cotinga. Thank you for watching. Click the link
