00:00You ready for this? Roll it. All right. Ashley, do I have your permission to use this interview in a
00:07movie?
00:08Yes. That's why I'm here.
00:11Is not treatment of these people, Debbie, broken?
00:18It's definitely broken. If I look different than you, then I don't belong.
00:24And I don't, I say that because that's the way community looks.
00:30Yes, we love you, but you're different. Therefore, you can't do what we do. And that is so wrong. That
00:39is so wrong.
00:47Why do people don't like the way we are?
00:52Some people look at them and not think them as human beings.
00:56Someone pushed me for no reason.
01:02A mentally retarded person may be of any age. An infant, a young child, a teenager, or a young adult.
01:12More and more of the mentally retarded are enjoying normal lifespans.
01:20To me, a disability don't mean anything to me because I know I can do things on my own and
01:29I can make it.
01:33Mostly everybody has a disability, some kind of disability.
01:36I've always had this label that I'm disabled. I can't do certain things.
01:43Every man, woman, and child with a disability can now pass through once closed doors.
01:49We wanted to be treated right.
01:52People don't like disabled and handicap.
01:56They've tried to put me on medicine. It's not something I'm proud of.
02:0225 years ago this month, our nation came together and took another bold step for equality and opportunity with the
02:09Americans with Disabilities Act.
02:11Nothing's changed. In an age of diversity and inclusion and equality, I believe we got it wrong.
02:22We may not be perfect, but we're on the right track, aren't we?
02:27We are still looking at this population as less than, unable to do things, because they look different or behave
02:37differently.
02:38Instead of activity and learning being encouraged, the children are often left to sit motionless. No one talks to them.
02:47People are afraid of what they don't know about. There's a fear.
02:52It's sad when you don't want to know about our population here.
02:56It's sad when they didn't want to know about black folks or Hispanic folks.
03:00We need more mercy. I think that would bring a lot more inclusion.
03:19The Center of Family Love is a place that exudes love.
03:23They actually spend time with each one of us and care for us individually.
03:28For a place to open in Oklahoma that would attend to their needs, I thought that was a very special
03:34event.
03:35Everybody treat me nice.
03:39This is their world now, their way.
03:42We're going to bring them in here and give them a life that they deserved a long time ago.
03:53They moved away when they arrived.
