00:519-11 was a clarifying moment for me
00:55and you and others in our administration
00:58because they realized
00:59that we were vulnerable to attack
01:02based upon what we believe
01:05based upon a belief system
01:08and that phone call from Koizumi
01:11proved to me in my mind
01:13that free societies can work together
01:16and yet we fought each other 40 years prior to that
01:19and so the question is
01:21if you're interested in laying the foundation for peace
01:23how best to do so
01:24and it's in our self-interest to do that
01:28that's the lesson of 9-11
01:30people say well you're imposing your values
01:31I'm not imposing our values
01:33these are universal values
01:35we saw this as an ideological conflict
01:40and for people to have no idea
01:42what we're talking about
01:43just understand there are people in the world
01:45who can't stand America
01:46because of our freedoms
01:49and what changed on that day
01:51of September the 11th
01:52was that those who can't stand
01:54what we stand for
01:56had the capacity to come and kill
01:59and that's what really changed
02:01the whole strategic equation
02:03for a president in the country
02:08but yeah
02:09my view is
02:10is that
02:12freedom is necessary for peace
02:15I've said all the time
02:16it's not America's gift to the world
02:19I happen to believe
02:19it's an almighty's gift
02:20to every soul
02:22and the idea of giving people
02:24a chance to live in freedom
02:25makes sense
02:26not only from a national security perspective
02:29but it makes sense
02:30for helping establish peace
02:32the irony is
02:34during our time in Washington
02:36there were certain people
02:37who said
02:37how dare you
02:38try to promote freedom
02:40as if it's like
02:42only available
02:43for certain kind of people
02:44and anyway
02:47I meant it
02:48and as did you
03:17we were just trying to do something
03:19to get people back to normal
03:21that's right
03:22why was that so important
03:23well because
03:24I didn't want us to lose our soul
03:26I wanted to
03:27I wanted to
03:29as we defended our freedoms
03:30I wanted people to remember
03:31how precious they are
03:32so one of the things that I did
03:34and I think you were very much involved
03:35in this decision
03:36shortly thereafter
03:37was to go to a mosque
03:39and I did so because
03:41I was deeply concerned
03:42about stories of women of cover
03:43being harassed at shopping centers
03:46particularly in Michigan
03:47and you know
03:49it became clear to me
03:50that if this is an ideological struggle
03:52which is what I viewed it as
03:53and we forego
03:54one of the most important parts
03:56of our ideology
03:57which is the freedom to worship
03:58the way you want to worship
03:59all of a sudden
04:00the enemy has won a victory
04:02you know our nation
04:03occasionally goes to
04:04isolationist periods
04:06where the attitude is
04:07we've got too many problems at home
04:09therefore who cares
04:09what happens overseas
04:11which
04:13really means to me
04:14they just don't pay attention
04:16to the lesson of 9-11
04:17because what happens overseas
04:20matter to our national security at home
04:22and
04:23yes I'm afraid so
04:25and
04:27to the extent that people
04:29are struggling against tyranny
04:30it makes sense
04:31we don't have to
04:31send troops
04:32but we ought to at least
04:34stand with them
04:35and stand beside them
04:38because this is what we went through
04:41250 years ago
04:42and
04:44again
04:44it's a belief
04:46that everybody
04:46wants to be free
04:47I worry about the fact
04:49that kids don't have
04:50a real understanding
04:51of our nation's history
04:52not only
04:53the history of 250 years ago
04:55but recent history
04:56September 11, 2001

05:00there's a lot of stuff
05:01written about it
05:02and
05:03to me
05:04I would hope these
05:06civic courses
05:07teach the lessons
05:08of 9-11
05:09so another generation
05:11can understand
05:12what we all went through
05:14but why it's important
05:15that what we went through
