00:00Is it possible to be an excellent student and yet be unhappy at school?
00:03I make videos about movies and TV series, subscribe!
00:06It's back to school time, so we're going to talk about how school is portrayed in TV series and...
00:09movies.
00:10Being unhappy at school when you are an excellent student,
00:12Well, that's one of the issues at the heart of the circle of vanished poets.
00:17The film takes place at Walton, which is an extremely prestigious school.
00:21where everything revolves around four principles.
00:24Tradition, honor, discipline, and excellence.
00:27And for students, success is not an option.
00:30That's what we discover with Neil.
00:32Neil is brilliant.
00:33He succeeded in his studies and his father had already practically decided everything about his future for him.
00:38He wants him to become a doctor.
00:40Except that Neil discovers something that truly fascinates him: the theatre.
00:44And his teacher, John Keating, specifically encouraged his students to think for themselves.
00:49and not simply follow the path imposed upon them.
00:52That's the whole point of the famous carpe diem.
00:54But for Neil, choosing his own future also means directly opposing his father.
01:00And that's where the film shows another facet of academic success.
01:03To get good grades, get into a top school, and pursue a prestigious career
01:08does not necessarily mean that one will succeed in life.
