Anthropic has revealed that an Iran-linked group used Claude AI to collect intelligence on U.S. military forces and track U.S. naval activity in the region. The AI was reportedly used to analyse publicly available military data, including ship and aircraft movements, satellite imagery, transponder data and military photographs.

According to Anthropic, Claude was also used to compile targeting material, research potential vulnerabilities in systems aboard U.S. Navy ships and investigate maritime satellite, Cisco and industrial control systems. The company says it disrupted an Iran-nexus operation involving AI-generated targeting recommendations.

The disclosure raises a major new question about the use of generative AI in military intelligence, cyber operations, weapons development and targeting.

01:36Anthropik says the group used CLAWD to research potential weaknesses in systems used aboard U.S. ships.
01:43That included maritime satellite terminals, Cisco communications equipment, and industrial control products.
