Violet always knew exactly whose hand to crawl back to! Dodo editor Brielle shares how Claudia rescued a tiny jumping spider named Violet from a local car wash and ended up seeing spiders completely differently. As their bond grew, Claudia created an entire miniature world for Violet, who always seemed to know exactly how to find her way back to Claudia’s hand.
Made in loving memory of Violet the jumping spider.

00:00This woman built an entire world from scratch, all for one tiny jumping spider.
00:07Claudia had always loved tiny things, but finding a pet she could truly bond with wasn't exactly
00:12easy. Her allergies made cats and dogs difficult to keep around. So she decided the only way to
00:17have a pet was to confront one of her fears, spiders. Honestly, I was a little scared to
00:23hold her at first. I think she was scared of me too. But when Violet became comfortable with
00:27letting Claudia watch her groom herself, the two became fast friends. With time, I could put my
00:34finger in front of her and she would just climb on it. The jumping spider Claudia was once nervous
00:40to hold, eventually became her tiny pocket companion. Violet would relax into Claudia's hands
00:46and even give her tiny high fives. They became inseparable. Even when Claudia gave her an entire
00:55room to explore, Violet walked straight back to her.
01:02I mean, for a spider, that's a pretty convincing love language.
01:06I've also had people question the idea of keeping a spider as a pet at all.
01:11I think humans naturally fear things we don't understand. I had some of those assumptions myself,
01:18but sometimes learning about the thing you're afraid of can completely change the way you see it.
01:24I learned to watch her body language to figure out whether she was comfortable, curious, scared,
01:30or simply uninterested. I'm feeding Violet some honey and water and she won't let go of it.
01:40Alright then. What are you doing? I love your rosy cheeks. That curiosity and awareness were actually
01:49what made me start showing her my miniatures. Claudia had already been making polymer clay
01:54miniatures for years and Violet was small enough to fit inside one of her tiny houses. Soon, Violet had a
02:00crocheted pouch, miniature rooms, and her own little travel carrier called a pocket pod.
02:13The best part now is that they can turn on. I did start making things specially for her.
02:21Eventually, I knew she was getting older. Something was changing.
02:28Then one morning, Violet passed away while resting in Claudia's hands.
02:33There isn't a day that I don't miss Violet. I hope people watching Violet's story
02:38start looking at small creatures a little differently.
02:45There will never be another Violet. But before long, more jumping spiders began
02:50joining the little world that she inspired. And every tiny room that Claudia builds now
02:55carries a little piece of the spider who started it all.
02:59Violet changed my entire outlook on life.
03:04Violet's life. You really only have one life. Violet's life was so small and so short,
03:10but somehow she reminded me that my time is limited too. Be yourself. Become that person you wish you could
03:19be.
