Anthropic says it uncovered a group operating in northern Yemen that used Claude AI models while working on missile and rocket projects linked to Iran-backed Houthi militants. According to the company, the activity involved three weapons-development efforts, including a guided rocket, a multi-stage ballistic missile reportedly designed for a range exceeding 2,000 kilometers, and a project known as R2000 involving several variants. Anthropic said operators used multiple Claude models for coding, research and code review, including technical software work related to guidance, navigation and control systems. The activity reportedly continued for about eight months, from December 2025 through August 2026.

00:21A disturbing new warning is emerging
00:24from the intersection of artificial intelligence and warfare.
00:29Anthropix says it uncovered a group operating in northern Yemen, territory controlled by Iran-backed Houthi militants,
00:37that used its clawed AI models while working on missile and rocket projects.
00:42The findings were detailed in Anthropix's latest report on detecting and countering AI misuse.
00:48According to the company, the activity involved three separate weapons development efforts.
00:54One involved a guided rocket, another was described as a multi-stage ballistic missile with a claimed range of more
01:02than 2,000 kilometers.
01:04A third project, designated R-2000, reportedly included multiple variants, including a hypersonic glide vehicle concept.
01:12What makes the case especially alarming is how the group reportedly used artificial intelligence.
01:20Anthropix says operators used CLOD across the weapons development effort.
01:25Instead of using the system for a single task, the operators reportedly ran multiple AI instances simultaneously.
01:33Different instances were assigned different roles, including coding, research, and code review.
01:39Anthropix says the activity involved technical software work, associated with guidance, navigation, and control systems.
01:47The company says the activity continued for roughly eight months, from December 2025 through August 2026.
01:56Anthropix says the group was pursuing several weapons projects at the same time.
02:01The reported systems included a guided rocket using commercially available computing hardware and terminal phase guidance.
02:09The second project was described as a multi-stage ballistic missile with a claimed range exceeding 2,000 kilometers.
02:17And the R-2000 missile family reportedly included several concepts, including a hypersonic glide vehicle concept.
02:25Anthropix assessed the activity as highly consistent with actors linked to the Houthis.
02:31But the report does not establish that the Houthi leadership itself directly operated the CLOD accounts.
02:38And it does not show that any AI-assisted weapon described in the report successfully entered operational service.
02:45The revelation points to a rapidly changing battlefield.
02:49AI can help people write, research, and solve complex technical problems.
02:54But those same capabilities can potentially be misused by military organizations, criminal groups, or non-state actors.
03:03Anthropix says the Yemen case demonstrates both the power and the vulnerability of advanced AI systems.
03:10The AI arms race may already be entering a new and deeply troubling phase.
